Iowa Nice Guy arrested

Oh yeah it's not just Iowa.

But if you go into a bar in rural Iowa, those folks aren't Ubering it home.

'Culture' might be a strong word but people definitely grow up thinking it's normal.

Agree with this. The "culture" thing isn't so much the driving bit, everyone knew that was wrong......but certainly is the drinking. I grew up in rural Iowa and you would think drinking is how they breath. Fortunately, most of the time cabs or friends took them home. But not always.

There are a bunch of losers out there that first thing in the morning/afternoon/night they have to look at police blotters/inmate listings to find people to make them feel better about their miserable life.
The ISU Daily used to publish them. In college, it was a Sunday morning thing to check the story co. Inmate roster to see if you knew anyone.

Even acting like a 1st offense means he “needs help” is really speculative and kinda rumor mongering.

Especially when he doesn’t even look that drunk in the mugshot. We don’t know the circumstances yet, so there’s no point in this.

I mean, if he was like 28 instead of 38 I get it. We all know it isn’t the first time because a lot of us have been there. “Help” comes in many forms, the OP might not mean he needs to go to rehab.Hopefully he can help himself.

i take it you are not a detective nor do you listen to Murph n Andy?

every single of his appearances this year has included some sort of bar or drinking story.... like Tuesday night at the bar. Thursday night talking about striking out with some lady at the bar. the evidence for a potential drinking problem was there. being arrested for drunk driving is the icing on the cake.

Do you work at the Polk County jail?

I always wonder about how people know about these things, whether they monitor the jail website 24/7, when a random guy like Siepker gets booked and it finds it's way to a place like here in under two hours.
There is polk county inmates Facebook page that updates pretty often. It might have a script that pulls and posts from the website.

It's a culture in Iowa, straight up.

When I've gone out in my home town (800ish people) it's about a mile walk home if I drink too much.

People look at me like I'm crazy for wanting to just walk home instead of driving, like a 20 minute walk is unheard of and many people get OWIs that live just a few blocks away.
This is absolutely true. In my home town there has been a golf tournament in memorium of a guy that died in a single car accident while drunk. And most people get drunk while golfing and drive home. Granted there’s no Uber but even if there was driving under the influence is so common I doubt anyone would use it.

Figured this was gonna happen at some point.
Ever since it came out he got divorced it was just booze filled story after story on Murph n Andy.

sometimes we need a reset. I have a DUI. Got it when I was 24. Never have driven drunk since.
Yep, it’s a dumb move and everybody knows it is but like most people I would be a liar if I tried to claim in my younger years I didn’t drive a few times when I shouldn’t have. Just got lucky.
My Dad got an OWI and it made him stop drinking completely going on nearly 20 years. It saved his life, as he was totally going to drink himself to death. It was a miracle he never got one before that.

If we were to replace the name and picture with an Iowa Hawkeye or Iowa State football player, I wonder how many of us would have a different take on this event. I am asking myself that very question. It is gut check for me.

His personal life is none of my business. Glad he’s ok and didn’t hurt anyone. Not condoning his actions but I feel for a guy that looks like he’s hit rock bottom. Or at the very least is dealing with some emotional issues in a destructive way. This could have ended much worse.

I’ve heard those stories on M&A, it just sounded more like a recently single guy getting back on the horse than a guy spiraling out.

I have people in my life with serious substance abuse issues, and it looks a lot different than this.

As I reflect on this news, I want to believe that the next time a collegiate athlete has a similar event in their own life, that I won't judge how the coaching staff handles the matter or judge the athlete themselves.

I want to believe I will be more empathetic toward 18-24 year old kids than I would someone who is nearly 40. I want to believe I will be less concerned by whether or not a kid's suspension is considered served for a game that was rained out. Or whether a kid is allowed to play in the CyHawk game but not a directional school game because of a DUI or PI that occured in the summer or fall camp.

Ultimately, I never again want to have an adverse view of how a coach's decision regarding how they handle their player's off field decisions. I don't want to concern myself with how those decisions will impact the outcome of a rivalry game or a rivals season. At the moment, it just seems "out of bounds" to discuss any of it on a public forum.

Just one guy's opinion.

Agree. But just think this is what they are broadcasting. Think of all they aren’t saying. I guarantee you MnA are not surprised this happened.

You want a drinking culture go to #1 on the list, Wyoming. Spent some time there. People in Iowa think they can drink, but they'd be under the table in an hour at your typical Wyoming bar.

I live in Wyoming and find this statement to be true.

I get over to Osage regularly, I’m from McIntire and have plenty of friends and family in Mitchell County.

The two communities are pretty freaking similar though. Just don’t tell someone who lives east of 63 that you’re in NE IA. You’ll get an earful about being a “flatlander”.

I’m from St Ansgar. We used to drink at the Red Man Inn on Christmas Day.
