Iowa ISU Position Breakdown

We need to come out fast and take them out of their running strategy by scoring 2-3 td's right off the bat. That would place the game in Rudock's hands which is better than in Weisman's IMO.

Our offense won't score 3 TDs the entire game I'd be willing to bet. Unless something changes drastically.

Both QBs do not throw the ball more than 3 yards downfield. I would say that the QB position is more of a push.

I dont know about Richardson, but the Iowa offense hasnt been close to the horizontal hell we saw last year. Much more deep or 5+ yard stuff. Also, I think those short routes are a product of inexperienced wideouts who are relied on to make pre snap reads and make a choice on their route.

Is this based off what we know so far or how good we think/hope we are? If it's based off performance then RB goes to them not necessarily because of our lack of talent but we used ours poorly, also LB at this point is clearly with them, a good chunk of David Johnson's 200 yards was because of poor positioning and especially poor tackling from the LBs.

I would put TE near a push with maybe a slight edge to Iowa just like the OP did. CJF for Iowa would probably look a lot better if the ball was thrown to him more than 2 times a game. I think he could have a decent career in the NFL.

As for the LB's I don't think it is even close. Iowa has the edge on that.

Sam has played in 3 and 3/4 games against 3 BCS teams and UNI. Rudock has played 2 games and 1 was against a 3 win FCS team. Sam has a 10-1 TD to INT ratio while Rudock's is 1-3

TE is only a push since Gerg Davis refuses to use them in an appropriate manner. If this was ferentz and KOK there are at least three iowa TE's id rather have than Brun.
While I agree to an extent on this, the fact is most of the time he is not open. I watched him a lot during the Missouri State game and he could not shed a blocker. As much size as he has, I believe he lacks that in speed. He reminds of a guy Iowa State played when we played Army several years back, the guy looked the part and was like 7 foot but he had no speed so unless they were throwing lob passes in the end zone he was heavily covered.

It's really a pointless comparison. The op should have done an O v D comparison, i.e. Oline v. Dline

Just read first post in this thread, but I would say ISU and eiu D-line is push. eiu has better LB play right now though. No push there...

ISU Advantages: QB, WR, Secondary, Punter
Iowa Advantages: O-line, TE, K, D-Line, LB

Iowa State must take advantage of Iowa's CBs and Iowa's stubbornness to play straight up with LBs on slot players. When Wimberly is lined up in the slot with any Iowa LB on him, the ball should automatically go there.

Based on game day performances...

ISU only has the advantage at 3 spots. QB, Defensive Secondary, and punter.

ISU's running backs may have more talent but they need to start producing. Advantage Iowa.

WR's are a push because both groups are equally bad.

LB's Iowa. By the end of the year, depending how our guys develop, it could be a push but right now definitely Iowa.

The rest are advantage Iowa. If Brun were 100% I would have called TE a push but not the case right now.

Defensively, ISU needs to force Iowa to move away from the running game and into a passing game.
Offensively. Just figure out a way to score some dang points. My guess is by attacking Iowa's corner backs.

Iowa has the worst WRs in college football, even if you think we're second worst we're still better than they are

In my opinion the outcome of this game mostly comes down to whether Lalk getting all of the snaps at center over the last 2 weeks has resolved the timing issues that arose when he had to take over from Farniok. Nothing was right after that point we had off sides because the snap was too late, we had delay of game becasue the snap was too late, we had guys in motion that were constantly out of position because of the snap timing. If this is resolved our offense will be fine and I think we win. If this isn't resolved it will be more of the second half of UNI and we will be in for a long day.

Iowa's defensive line has 0 sacks through 2 games.

Just to clarfy, That 6-10 guy played WR for Army.

QB: ISU- I like SR so far, he can make the throws and does not turn the ball over which is a shocking change from past ISU QB’s and has fewer INTs in 3.75 games than JR does in two for Iowa

RB: Iowa- This is close to a toss-up to me. Weisman is a FB playing RB, he is proven but not a risk to go the distance, Iowa does finally have some dept. We have heard for the past 2-3 yrs about all of the talent at ISU but it has yet to really materialize due to poor OL play or poor play calling or both. Either way Iowa has more production, period.

OL: Iowa and this isn’t even close right now. IMO this is the biggest reason for ISU’s struggles the past few years. UNI has dominated us up front during the last 2 meetings over 3 years, yeah that’s a problem. Stunt/overload one side and ISU struggles.

WR: ISU by a hair similar to Iowa and the RB position. ISU has more depth here and while they have yet to really kick in in gear I think there is more potential and game breakers on ISU roster than Iowa

TE: Push- Honestly CJF is a matchup nightmare if they use him. Maybe he doesn’t get used because of his attitude or just a lack of production but he could hurt us. Brun, Bibbs, Boesen are all decent and I like Brun the most out of either teams at this position

DL: Iowa- ISU Gave up 200 yds to UNI RB and were man handled at the LOS. I think there is potential at DL for ISU but they have to improve dramatically from week one to this Saturday for this to even be a close competition.

LB: Iowa- This was another position group where ISU looked terrible in game one. Clearly more talent for Iowa at least that has been shown thus far

DB: ISU: We missed Watson against UNI but Washington and Watson are solid and Broomfield is picking up where Givens left off creating TO’s

SPT: ISU- Kirby is a stud, top 5 in the nation for sure. I think Netten/Arceo are solid, coverage teams are pretty good and KR/PR have lots of potential.

My rankings grade out as 4 in favor of ISU and 4 in favor of Iowa with TE being a push. On paper that’s even. When you look at the position matchups that will be on the field vs each other I worry that Iowa’s OL and RBs will take our DL and LB’s to the woodshed. Also our OL got pushed around by UNI, Iowa isn’t Alabama but they are more talented than UNI so what happens this week?
ISU’s offense has to at least maintain some drives and limit 3 and outs. If they don’t and the defense is continuously asked to stop the running game of Iowa with no rest I think eventually that plays into Iowa’s favor. IMO if Iowa passes the ball more than 10 times in the first half Davis the OC should be fired ( I hope he doesn’t read this), if I were them I would pound ISU until we prove that they cant run against us. That is unless Sammy and Co just tear **** up on offense and turn this into a shootout.

Iowa has the edge at LB and it isn't even close. Morris and Kirksey are exponentially better then George/Knott/Miller. Granted Knott is in his first start, George looked like dog crap last weekend and Miller isn't too good in my opinion.
