Iowa ISU Position Breakdown

If Brun healthy, I give the tight end edge to us. CJF seems like he should be a weapon just because he is so big, but can the qb deliver the ball high to him? Can't tell for sure if I haven't been impressed because of him or because of who is throwing him the ball.

Iowa has the edge at LB and it isn't even close. Morris and Kirksey are exponentially better then George/Knott/Miller. Granted Knott is in his first start, George looked like dog crap last weekend and Miller isn't too good in my opinion.

Isn't Brackens starting, not Miller?

Knott is replacing Miller, you need Brackens in there and yes anyone even remotely paying attention knows how bad our LB play is compared to Iowa. Biggest descrepancy between the two teams when matching up positions.

With what we've seen this year it's a big discrepancy, but if JG plays like we all know he can then IMO it's pretty close. I'd still give the edge to Iowa but not by much.

That would make it close at one of 3 LB positions, but Iowa's other 2 linebackers are much better than our other 2. No question, IMO, that LB favors Iowa.

LB: PUSH. I know our LB looked bad against UNI, but I look for George to step up this week. Also, Luke Knott to set the stage for his career at ISU. Love his knowledge and knack to be in the right place, at the right time. That said, Iowa’s LB have a bit more time to adjust. But I’ve always thought Morris was way overrated.

Wow. Just.....wow.

George>Morris but other wise Iowa.

I'll believe George is all world when I see it on the field this season. Last year he had 1 and for a time 2 NFL caliber linebackers to help him out (the old rising tide elevates all ships adage). He was invisible against UNI.

Instead of position by position comparisons I think for a more accurate portrayal you need to compare our offensive position to their defensive position. Our running backs may be better than their running backs but that doesn't matter because they aren't competing with each other.

ISU QB/Wr vs. Iowa Secondary: ISU

ISU Running Backs vs Iowa Linebackers: IOWA

ISU Offensive line vs. Iowa Defensive line: ISU

Iowa QB/Wr vs. ISU Secondary: ISU

Iowa Running Backs vs ISU Linebackers: IOWA

Iowa Offensive line vs. ISU Defensive line: IOWA

I think this depicts why people on either side are not confident about this game...
But due to the following I think ISU has the edge!

ISU Coaching Staff vs Iowa Coaching Stagg: ISU

Home Field Advantage: ISU

Granted ISU's line aren't world beaters but from what I hear Iowa's defensive line is young and not very good either...

Also, I don't consider myself that well informed on Iowa's team, rather I wanted to give my viewpoint on how the analysis should be conducted.

You're right, Iowa's D line is not very good and hasnt produced a sack yet. However, our O-line is putrid, especially without Farniok.

The problem with most of these analysis' is that we are judging us off of ability and them from experience. If we do experience for this year only I think that QB vs DB is the only advantage ISU has. Based on hope, I think ISU wins by 9.

Not sold on George being that great of an LB. Number 1, he doesn't really have the size. Short at 5'11'' and not even 220 pounds. He's quick, but not gonna burn anyone or catch anyone in pursuit. There are probably NCAA Div. II schools with bigger LB corps than ISU, as much as I hate the fact. I need to see a lot more out of him than I did v. UNI if I am to have ANY shred of faith in ISU's defense this year.

I agree with architect. At best the ISU OL vs. Iowa DL is a push.

Overall, I think we have a chance to win, if either our poor performance against UNI was really the result of looking past them a little (personally, I don't think it was), or Iowa's offense is not significantly improved from last year (jury is still out).

Iowas dline doesn't have good pass rushers but they are good against the run. If I was ISU I would come out passing and make them try to stop me. The problem might be protection though. I the line looks as bad against UNI then look out.

Iowa's LBs will look better than ours because their D-Line is better than ours. Their DL will clog up the middle and take on double-teams, leaving their LBs free to scrape and make plays. I am afraid our DL will get gashed open, leaving our LBs to fight off 300lb linemen.

What we see on Saturday will not necessarily reflect LB quality.
