Yes, Iowa went from 1962 through 1980 season without having a winning season. That is 19 straight years. They did finish .500 a few times. Kansas is currently at 13 straight so they could tie it in another 6 years.

I looked up Kansas State and they were close a few times but I don't believe they ever went 19 seasons.

I've known about Iowa's bad streak and enjoy mentioning to 80s' Hawk fan when I can. They really refuse to acknowledge that piece of history.

Hawkeye fans say you can’t count the Covid year. So probably 7 to Match.

Frank Lauterbur: 1971-73, record: 4-28
Bob Commings: 1974-78, record: 18-37

They were part of the set that combined to set the national record for consecutive non-winning seasons.
My first-ever college football game was sitting in the wooden end zone bleachers of Kinnick Stadium in 1977, watching Bob Commings lead the Hawkeyes to a 27-6 loss to Ohio State. That was also the year Commings was trying to make a starting QB out of his son, Bobby, a tactic now used repeatedly by the Hawkeye basketball program.

Don’t forget Jerry Burns, who had a 5-4 record in his first season at Iowa in 1961 then kicked off that record non-winning-season streak by going 11-23-2 over the next four years. He won just 8 conference games in five seasons … then used that college success to go on to coach the freakin’ Minnesota Vikings from 1986 to 1991, making the playoffs three straight years but failing to win a playoff game (EDIT: I’m wrong, I messed that up, he won three playoff games and made the NFC championship in 1988) - even with players like Anthony Carter, Cris Carter, Chris Doleman, and Joey Browner.

For Iowa, after the glory years of Forest Evashevski, it went:

Jerry Burns, 16-27-2
Ray Nagel, 16-32-1
Lauterbur, 4-28-1
Commings, 18-37

Then Hayden Fry, who had two losing seasons to extend the streak through 1980 before finally getting a winning record in 1981 … the first since Burns’ 1961 season.

Nice try.... the Vikings made it to the NFC title game in 1988

Oops. Misread the Wikipedia page. My bad, Burns actually won three playoff games! Even with Senate hopeful Herschel Walker as his top RB.

Burns did fall off and underperformed considerably his last couple of years with the Vikings (I suppose partly because the team gave away its future in that horrible Walker trade). But yes, I was wrong to be so harsh about his three playoff teams.

Oregon state had 28 losing seasons from '71 to '99

It does diminish the accomplishment that was Iowa Football in the 70s and 80s

That was a terrible trade. Definitely didn't help Burnsie.

And none of those 4 coaches played ISU, when we would have had some good success against them.

Just a reminder Eickholt has had Iowa winning 6+ tournament games over the past two years. They're 1-2 with losses to 7 and 12 seeds.

The thought that Eickholt isn't a complete homer is crazy. I really don't care that he is, but I don't get why he or anyone else would dispute that fact.

Like it or not, the fact that he's a fanboy gets him access to the program that he loves. The other side of that coin is he isn't taken as a serious journalist. He's a mouthpiece for the program. Not completely unlike what CW does for ISU, CW is just way better at it and he would never argue that he's not a homer.

My high school classmate (RIP) tried to make a case for Iowa's MLB being first team all-American because he was making 20 tackles a game.

He neglected to factor in that he was making most of these tackles 10 to 20 yards down the field.

Him and any Iowa fans disputing that is hilarious. The difference between him and CW for example is that 247 is intended to present information (primarily recruiting) in an unbiased fashion. Cyclone Fanatic is a fan site so I don't expect CW to be 100% objective much like I wouldn't rely on the the Hawkeye Heaven site or whatever it's called for objective reporting.

The final four prediction and hotel stay with Frank is such an embarrassing look from your 247 writer I can't even begin to start.

I still loved Jordan tweeting out the question “how does one pack for a month?” And then losing like 4 days later lol.
