Iowa Beat Writers

Miller and Condom's interview with Tom Kakert just now: Why can't the Big 10 do anything in the tournament for the last 20 years?

Kakert: It's all because they beat each other up during the regular season every year.

Sure, Tom.....
Yet he's the first guy to say other leagues are bad when it happens to them.

All league play is difficult but when the Big Ten flames out year after year it just shows what the level really is.

Between this and people grumping about local coverage in a couple other threads, it reminds me of how surprised I am when I visit family and friends in Iowa and they flip on the local news. I guess with no real newspapers left in Iowa it would be a thing but still catches me off guard. Outside of Brenda whatshername, the KARE meteorologist here, I actually cannot name a single other TV news type here in the Twin Cities. There is one ISU alumni but his name escapes me at the moment, partially because he's been pretty much invisible within the local ISU alumni community. Think the last time I tuned in the local stations was during the summer unrest a couple years ago.
Randy Shaver?

I don't know how old the 'beat one another up' thing is but I remember first hearing it about 20 years ago I think after the B1G had a rough bowl season.

I don't hear it for any other conference and last I checked those other conferences have P5/6 level athletes too so...

Looks like KCCI wants to keep their press credentials. Whey bring this up when you have two D1 teams 25 miles north of you going to the sweet 16? Pretty crappy article they picked up from CR.

Conner and JBo finding something new to cry about, is it wrong sure, but those two asshats bring it on themselves.

So what's the excuse for their terrible non-conference performance before conference season started?

"I think right now Iowa's setup pretty well for basketball next year."

-Chad right now on 1460
Not saying they can’t surprise again, but the roster as it is right now is not setup well. For the most part Keegan carried that team on his back and he’s gone. Who is coming in to replace that?

Even if Kris were to put up Keegan type numbers next year (which they are banking on), they'll still be significantly worse than they were this year. They have no point guard. Which is going to give Fran the green light to start Conner at point and it's going to be a disaster.

You can't take away Keegan and Toissant and expect to be even as good as they were last year. Fran won't go looking in the transfer portal because that's not the right way. So they'll be lucky to make the NIT.

They're expecting Kris to take the same step forward that his brother did. Certainly, he could, but it's far, far, far from a given. They're expecting PMac to take a step forward as well.

However, you're correct. Keegan led them in points, rebounds, blocks, field goal percentage, and 3point percentage.

Toussaint led them in assists and steals

So they're losing their top contributor in basically every major category.

Jorbo was their second leading scorer and between him and Keegan, accounted for roughly half of the team's made 3 pointers, about 40% of their made field goals and about 40% of their free throw attempts.

So there's definitely some room for some folks to step up

Expecting Kris and PMac to suddenly be good in their age 22 seasons after not showing much so far is asinine thinking but then again, Iowa fans never cease to amaze me.

Yes but he also wants the Utah Valley guy.

Chad did say 2023 is a huge, huge year for Iowa recruiting as its a total roster reset, hence why he thought this upcoming year they should be fine.
The last 3 years Iowa has had NPOY candidates (and won one) and haven’t been “that” good as a team.

Either way, they just lost a NPOY candidate, the best shooter in Big 10 history, and a guy who might’ve started at PG next year. Seems like he’s trying to talk himself into something.

Lol I've been saying this exact same thing to my Iowa friends and coworkers.

Kris might be an ok player, but to expect him to take this giant leap at 22 years old is just not going to happen.
