Iowa Basketball

Iowa didn't look too good in the 2nd half. I still think Iowa State will take care of Iowa by 15 points.

Yeah, that game was about as sloppy as it gets. It looked like a Saturday afternoon at the rec type of game. I'm not really sure what to take away from a game like that. Iowa got up by 30, and then seemed content with throwing up bad three point shots within the first five seconds of the shot clock every time down the court. They did some good things, and it's nice that games like this allow for them to play about 10 guys some good minutes, but outside of that, I don't know what to read into it.

What I took away from tonights game is that Iowa is still learning how to play at this faster pace.

This is a different style than Iowa played last year as Fran now feels that he has the players to make this work.

The game got really sloppy at times tonight and the 22 turnovers was very ugly. Shooting 49% in a game like this is one bright spot.

Iowa has plenty of preconference games left to get better at the faster pace. I'm completely not worried after only two games.

Same. Don't know how to read Iowa quite yet. They have alot of raw talent, but still don't know their idenity yet. I still think they will have a down year in the Big 10. I think they will win about 14 or 15 games overall this year.

Seriously? The "talent" is pretty sparse, actually.

I think they have some raw talent in May, Gatens and Basabe. Those guys are good athletes that arn't afraid to get down and dirty diving for loose balls and such.

This. There's a fair amount of talent, but the majority of it is pretty raw. Gatens pretty much is what he is: a solid player who would be a role player on most good teams. But he's pretty polished.

Basabe, May, White, even Marble all have the chance to be pretty good if they can smooth things out in their games.

And while he's not blessed with tremendous talent, I think a lot of people will be pleased with what McCabe brings this year. He finally seems to have adjusted to the college game. He's not trying to do too much; things that worked for him in high school don't work at this level, and last year he kept trying to force things. Now he appears to be playing more within himself, and by doing so I think he'll maximize his potential. Solid garbage man/scrapper with a decent outside stroke, great energy off the bench.

Not flaming b/c I have been to a lot of Hawkeye bball games in my day and have a lot of friends with ties to that program, but guys like May, McCabe, and White will really struggle in conference play and against some non conference teams.

Gatens and Basabe are really going to need to step up for the Hawks. Gatens especially. He hasn't shot a good % from 3 since his freshmen year but he has to this year for Iowa to be successful. And Basabe has to stay in games. When Iowa has White and Brommer, or McCabe and Archie, or any of those guys on the floor at the same time, they will struggle

May struggled last year, mightily, in the Big Ten. He wasn't too bad as a freshman; Evan Turner told him (May) that he would be a star if he could improve his ball-handling. Last year he just lost confidence, for whatever reason. But again, the raw talent is there with May.

McCabe was a freshman, who often times tried to do too much. I'm just curious to see how he looks when he plays within himself against Big Ten teams. I think a lot of Hawk fans will like the results. Will he put up gaudy stats? Never. But I think he can be a very nice contributor off the bench. He's got the attitude for it.

I've said since day 1 that May is Adam Haluska without the skills. If he doesn't know how to dribble by the time he is a soph in college than he never will IMO.

McCabe and White are too undersized to play 4 in the Big 10. Sure they can pull guys outside with their ability to shoot but most Big 10 4's won't have a problem guarding them out there as they don't worry about their ability to drive by them.

Wow! You must know a whole lot more about Aaron White than most of us Hawkeye fans who have been watching him for a year and half now (ie. following him in his high school career / summer league)

What leads you to believe that White can't drive by anyone? He has quite a repertoire of offensive moves. His offensive game is way ahead of his defensive game right now.

The things that will limit Aaron are that he is on the thin side and he's inexperienced at the collegiate level. Other than that, he should be able to contribute many productive minutes for the Hawkeyes this year.

Really? Was it that 11 win season in a watered down B10 last year that really showed his coaching prowess or was it the negative progression of Gatens and May?

Congratulations, he won some games at Siena (I think?), now if someone could please point out where the hell Siena actually is on a map, I might actually give a ****.

We all get you hate Iowa, but this post shows your ignorance of basketball knowledge.:twitcy:

Haluska=premier athlete, not the most instinctive or natural hoops player. Where does this leave May, "without the skills"?

Don't lie. You have not been watching him for a year and a half. Following him? Sure. Watching? No. And him scoring and driving by guys in HS and non conference is different than conference play. Lucca Staiger was said to be able to get to the lane. Doesn't happen. White won't get around Big 10 guys. McCabe couldn't last year either.

May is a very good athlete. I will agree that Haluska was an elite athlete but he was also 10X more skilled with the basketball than May. May is athletic but also a robot. It's very odd.

I thought I made that clear when I qualified my statement. I have been literally watching Aaron White this summer as many other Hawk fans have. I'm not sure if you have ever watched him play. Have you? White has a much more polished offensive game than McCabe... trust me, he will be able to get by defenders. You are hoping he's a stiff, but you will be greatly disappointed.

Yes I have.

Summer league means nothing. Last year Bubu Palo was summer league MVP. Year before Sean Haluska averaged 30 some a game.

I'm not hoping anything. I've attended more Iowa games sitting behind their bench than I'd like to admit. I've followed that program very close for the last decade. They have some Big 10 talent on the team. White and McCabe aren't those guys

Fran McCaffery would disagree with you. So you think you got a better eye for talent than coach McCaffery??

You've never said how many times you've seen White play... I'm still suspecting that is 0 times.

I think we're saying the same thing.

Haluska>>>>>>>>>>>>May

What are you talking about? That roster is still way undertalented for the level they play.

It is very likely that they have more good players than they did a year ago. But in terms of actual talent match ups with the teams in their league, they are still way behind.

Plus, you should probably know what the term "raw talent" actually means before you try to use it in a sentence.

What he actually said is factually correct. You even agreed with him, probably didn't realize it, in your last paragraph.

He will be fine, but for this year, he is not physical enough to play the 4 in that conference.

And as far as driving by people, etc. It will be much harder for him to do when he is pushed out 5-10 feet further from the basket because he is not yet strong enough to establish position.
