As opposed to Scotty, who isn't a true point guard and by playing that position has his biggest asset (3-point shooting) all but neutralized?

With a guy like Cartwright, for all his flaws, you have a solid point guard and can move Scotty back to the 2 where he can be most effective. You don't think that would be an improvement over what you have right now?

The hang up with people is that they can't get past the traditional team setup. Once Allen is healthy people will see why CFH wants Scotty handling the "pg". In reality the offense will run through White. When the ball is in Scotty's hands he has PG duties, when he doesn't he can move for a shot as a 2.

I don't think Cartwright is bad. But I don't think he is that good either.

Somebody had to score for the hawks last year. Somebody also had to make plays, and get them into an offense last year too.

Remember how limited that roster was last year, and still is to a large degree, this year. Somebody had to score points, just like DG here last year, and Brackins, and Mike Taylor before that. When you have only a couple of guys that can put the ball in the hoop, and one of them is as limited as Basabe is offensively, there are going to be lots of chances to score.

I know his stats from last year, and whatever, but the fact is that he would not have seen the court much, let alone put up stats, on a good team. Would he have played significant minutes at Illinois? Purdue? Michigan/Michigan State?

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think he would have played there, or at schools like Penn St. The thing is, that franny has masked a lot of his shortcomings, as a good coach will do. But, franny also knows the reality that he is WAAAAAAYYYYYYY short on playmakers, so he has to live and die with his mistakes.

That long leash, plus being the ONLY player that can handle the ball, makes it possible to put up decent stats. I look at Cartwright as poor man's version of Battle from Penn State. Battle wasn't that talented, moreso than Cartwright, but he got to play because they had noone else.

Like I said, I think he's a good player. But, I don't know that he would be as effective in an offense where he was a 4th-5th option, where his main role is to facilitate, and get the team into an offense.

I actually think Bryce would be better on a team where he played facilitator first. A very big chunk of his turnovers came when he was looking to create for himself out of necessity. As a penetrate and kick out slasher, who is good enough that you have to respect his ability to score, he'd fit better than he does in an offense where he's counted on to carry a significant portion of the scoring workload.

And I fully agree he's not great. But in the kind of role I just described, he's more than good enough. With guys like White, Allen, Scotty, Ejim, etc., he doesn't have to be John Wall or Kyrie Irving.

Ahh, so you are saying he was your Mike Taylor....I am not sure what his ceiling is though. Taylor did play in the league for a minute, and will make a decent living playing bb, I am not sure Cartwright is that athletic, or talented.

I will admit that I watched very little hawk bb last year, but the bits and pieces of games that I did see, he just seemed to always be thisclose to being completely out of control. That is where I make the judgement that I am not sure that he would be more than a serviceable point guard for a team like Iowa State.

He is kind of like a DG last year, or Brackins before that, good player, who looks even better because of the team that is around him.

I'm not trying to claim otherwise. But with the other pieces already at ISU, he wouldn't need to be an elite PG to be effective.

I fail to see to see where a bad shooting, bad defending PG does anyone much good.

He's an average defender, but if you read carefully, you'll see that nobody here believes Cartwright would be a primary scoring option for ISU. He'd be the 4th option at best. But as a facilitator, he could very easily fit in for Hoiberg.

Basabe is a longer version of Ejim without a jump shot. Now, Ejim is a good player, but not one that is going to scare the opposing team. Same with Basabe.

tm, How long until White starts over Gatens? White is probably the one to be worried about for ISU fans.

I'm not worried about White this year.

What an ignorant post. I think Fran has proven at his every stop so far that he is much better than "mediocre on his best day". Fran is putting together a nice young group of players, led by Basabe and White and has a terrific recruiting class coming in next year. He certainly has Iowa on the right track.

Really? Was it that 11 win season in a watered down B10 last year that really showed his coaching prowess or was it the negative progression of Gatens and May?

Congratulations, he won some games at Siena (I think?), now if someone could please point out where the hell Siena actually is on a map, I might actually give a ****.

Your ignorance of a school's location is an argument for coaching ability?

No, it's mainly the fact that he's taken three different programs (Lehigh, UNC-Greensboro and Siena) to the NCAA tournament. He also won two NCAA games at Siena which is more than we've won in the last decade.

I don't know why I even bothered to respond to your idiotic post, but just so you know Siena is in Albany, New York. So now you can say you learned something today.

That is a ridiculously good stream for being a random internet feed.

..And there are about 3k ppl (maybe) at Carver.
