Iowa Basketball

this game aside, I think many on here are underestimating Iowa. They WILL be better than people think. Fran can coach, they have a point guard that really came on last year, they have a swing man in Baasbe that improved a bunch last year too. Watch Baasbe play, he looks good doing what he is doing. I am actually very concerned about our game with them at Hilton.

Unfortunately, I agree. Fran is a good coach and it appears he's putting together something over there in IC. They have a few pieces already and it sounds like next year they will be adding quite a few more pieces. Iowa will be better than some people think.

If ISU had DG back this year, or a guy like Cartwright from Iowa, we'd be looking VERY good IMO. The PG position just scares me to death right now. Bubu Palo could just possibly be our best option at PG right now. Hopefully Chris Allen or Tyrus McGee can play it because Scotty is just NOT a PG at all. Scotty might be our best shooter on the team and I don't believe he got one single 3 pointer off in the first exhibition game because he was playing PG. Not what you want at all.

And I hope Hoiberg was playing it VERY conservative in the first exhibition because I watched the entire game and I think we got one fast break basket all game long on Royce White's dunk. We will need to get in transition a LOT more than that. It was a half court game all day long. That's not to our advantage IMO.

It sounded to me like Iowa last night was pressing a lot more, creating turnovers, and getting in transition a lot more than we were in our first exhibition game. That HAS to change IMO. We are deep now. We can afford to press more. Fred says we're going to be a run and gun type team. I hope to see more of that in the coming games. If we're running most of the time, the PG position won't be that critical, but if we're walking it up and getting into a half court set all the time, it will become critical. We need to hide the fact that we don't have a PG.

I wouldn't call Basabe a swing man. He's not one to put it on the floor a lot, and his jumper is pretty shaky. At this point, he's mostly a garbage man, down low to clean things up offensively on the glass and play defense.

Aaron White is more of a swing man than Basabe at this point. White's got good size, capable ball handler, nice outside stroke. Can play the 3, 4, and 5 (against better competition, the 5 will be pretty tough for him right now).

Basabe is a longer version of Ejim without a jump shot. Now, Ejim is a good player, but not one that is going to scare the opposing team. Same with Basabe.

tm, How long until White starts over Gatens? White is probably the one to be worried about for ISU fans.

I don't think that's ever going to happen. White isn't a shooting guard-type. He's a bit of a stretch at the 3 at this point, so no way he could handle the 2. Same with the 5: he's a bit of a stretch there. His home will be as a 4 or a 3/4 swing man. Scouts were likening him to Gordon Hayward, and he showed a little of that last night.

He's much more likely to start over Brommer/Archie/Olaseni than he is to start over Gatens. Plus, I know I really like his energy off the bench, and I think for right now, Fran does too.

I actually think it would be fun, to have both ISU and Iowa become good programs again. Of course I want to beat them every year, but I'm sick of UNI/Drake being better than ISU/Iowa.

This year, when we obviously lack a PG, at least we play them in Hilton. Next year, I think we'll be a much more complete team, so hopefully we can go 3-0 against them (Hoiber/Fran era), in Carver.
I agree with this-it would be nice to have us be the top 2 teams in the state and do well, yhe way it should be. And I do really like Fred Hoiberg, and wish him sucess at Iowa State. How anyone in Iowa can not root for him regardless of the team he coaches would surprise me.

Iowa's MBB program is garbage and Fran is mediocre on his best day. Saying anything otherwise is denial.

I fully expect them to be even worse this season, teams are going to eat them alive inside and they don't have a single guy that scares anyone from a range standpoint. Christ, Royce White has more physical strength inside than that entire team combined.

What an ignorant post. I think Fran has proven at his every stop so far that he is much better than "mediocre on his best day". Fran is putting together a nice young group of players, led by Basabe and White and has a terrific recruiting class coming in next year. He certainly has Iowa on the right track.

Feel the same way. I'm not ashamed at all to root for Iowa in basketball. I grew up doing that and it's fun.

I still remember my jealousy the day you guys hired Fran. I think he'll be phenomenal over there.

Of course, I got over my jealousy when we hired Hoiberg.

An ignorant post-try to scale back the hared a little bit,sissy-boy.

You're wishing ISU had a mediocre at best point guard?

As opposed to Scotty, who isn't a true point guard and by playing that position has his biggest asset (3-point shooting) all but neutralized?

With a guy like Cartwright, for all his flaws, you have a solid point guard and can move Scotty back to the 2 where he can be most effective. You don't think that would be an improvement over what you have right now?

Scott hit his fair share of threes yesterday... and it is not as big of an asset now that we have Allen and Babb that can also hit threes.

Besides, Scott is not the PG. Royce played more PG than anyone else yesterday... Now that is far from mediocrity.

good god. who do you root for?

Creighton smacked around that same Chicago State Iowa crushed. I'm actually looking forward to watching the D. McDermott/ Basabe battle.

No kidding. Grew up watching and listening to the big4. Listened to UNI beat Green Bay led by Cedrick McCullough on a small battery radio due to the ice storm that knocked out our power for quite some time. That same season Newby put down Mizzou. Got Iowa PG Steve Carfino to sign my my Iowa team picture so I could take it to show & tell. Saw Curt Smith play many times live even though you knew Rudy Washington would lose the game just by being Rudy. Same for Abadamarco, who I actually kinda liked. Liked Dr. Tom Davis, and felt pain when UNLV ended their run in the 1987 tournament.

I'm a college basketball junkie, and I enjoy watching the in-state teams succeed, but I have to admit that although the UNI thing is a cute story, and I love what they did to KU, I'm sick of them going places where I want to be. It's our turn, and this time it's forever.

That's true. My post wasn't nearly fair or balanced. I dropped the ball there.

We'll probably do that with Western Carolina on Sunday, now that our guys have an actual game under their belt. As they look smoother, these games will look worse.

But that's different, because it's us.

Hell yeah.
