37. Fran McCaffery, Iowa
Record: 305-227
Record at Iowa: 54-50 overall (.519), 21-33 Big Ten (.389)
NCAA Tournament: 2-5
McCaffery resurrected Iowa to NIT status the last two seasons, and he should have the Hawkeyes in contention for their first NCAA Tournament since 2006. If Iowa reaches the Tourney, it will be the fourth reclamation job McCaffery has led to the Big Dance, joining Lehigh, UNC Greensboro and Siena.

38. Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State
Record (all at Iowa State): 62-39 overall (.614), 26-26 Big 12 (.500)
NCAA Tournament: 2-2
Only Iowa State could have hired “The Mayor,” who spent more time in NBA front offices than on the coaches’ bench at any level. Hoiberg returned to Ames to make his alma mater competitive, going 23-13 in the Big 12 in the last two seasons. Iowa State needs to be creative to stay competitive, and that’s what it got in Hoiberg. He’s succeeded with Division I transfers in Royce White, Korie Lucious, Will Clyburn, Chris Babb and now DeAndre Kane. And Hoiberg has been among the best in applying advanced statistical analysis and scouting to his program. The Cyclones led the Big 12 in points per possession and effective field goal percentage last year.

Everyone stopped recruiting him when he got hurt. Iowa fell back on him after they missed on a couple of their top targets

No wonder all that MVC talent wants to come to Iowa City! Kinda sad a coach with 62 wins is right behind a coach with 305 wouldn't you say?
 
No Fred's only better in conference, out of conference, and in the big dance, otherwise Fern's the runaway leader.

You forgot bringing in top 100 talent and winning the head to head. I don't understand the justification. It's like "Fred at #38, oh **** we forgot about the other school in Iowa, let's just put him at #37".

Personally I think Fran is a great fit for the Hawks and Fred is great for the Clones. Really, I have nothing bad to say about the Mayor cuz he's just great young coach.

Get a little tired of the Fran bashing on here but is cf so it's to be expected. Just kind of funny seeing a National Pub ranking Fran ahead of Hoiberg. Had to post it.....carry on.
 
Iowa wasn't just a bad team when Fran was hired...they were horrid. The turnover under Fran has been pretty remarkable to say the least. Iowa is still not the world beater's some Iowa fans claim they are, but they are a much, much better team than they were just 3 years ago.

Fred has done a nice job in his time at ISU but he did not inherit the mess that Fran did. Fred came into a decent situation and was able to get a few key recruits and transfers and they have improved under him. HIs ability to take transfers and freshmen and get them to mesh as a team is impressive.

I think outsiders like the writers for Athlon recognize the turnaround under Fran and he is being credited for that. I don't think you can say one or the other is better at this point. IF you were rating the two on a scale of 1-10 from where they started to where they currently are : Fran started at a 2 and is now at a 6. Fred started at a 5 and is now at 7.5.
 
How do you start at 5 when you'd never, ever coached a game?

If you're saying McDoormat left a middle of the road situation, I guess I'll just have to laugh.

One national publication doesn't seem to agree. I could post the multiple other publications talking about Hoiberg as a coach and him being a candidate for other positions that Fran isn't listed in as well.

It's alright to be jealous of the success Fred has had at ISU, if I was an Iowa fan I know I sure would be too.

Never said a great case couldn't be made for Fred. It's just not the open and shut case you make it out to be.

I realize you're overcompensating for what happened Saturday. You're trying too hard though. Just sit back and relax and realize there are bumps in every road. Just because the Clones suck at the moment doesn't mean they won't turn it around.

Try not to take all your heartbreak and disappointment out on Fran. It's unseemly and unworthy of a quality poster like yourself.

Fred inherited 3 scholarship players. I don't see that as a better situation than Fran.

Never once have said Fran is a bad coach, just saying Fred is a better coach is all. I also stated that IMO if Fran wants to turn the corner and he needs to bring in some talent in the 2014 class, something that Iowa is currently lacking

Fair enough. If I was a Clone Fan (when not playing the Hawks I actually root for the clones believe it or not) I'd probably be saying Fred is better. His results have been better to this point, I'll give you that.


On a side note...with Bubu gone who's the PG this year?

DeAndre Kane will probably start at PG IMO, also have Monte Morris and Naz Long

Incorrect, but that's your definition of a decent situation Fran will be all that you hope for and more.
