Anybody have some interior painting done lately? I suck at it and looking to hire it done. Saw some online price per sq ft but was all over the place. I don't like to just get estimates from companies unless I'm sure I can afford it.

Paint isn't cheap. We just painted our basement (bare drywall). Four gallons primer, and another 8 of paint adds up. We did ceilings too so that adds to it. The paint we got was 25 dollars per gallon before rebate. It does suck though...

It's stupid expensive for what it is. Do it yourself. We had a "painting party", invited a bunch of friends and supplied the alcohol. Still way cheaper.

There is a guy in Ankeny that's an ISU alum. He's on his own. If you're looking to hire and are near Ankeny I'll PM you his info.

The in-laws do interior painting as a side job on the weekends and typically a 14x14 bedroom is $125 labor plus paint costs. They get a good discount on paint and you pay for the costs of the paint and not material+10% that some contractors charge.

Send me a PM and I will give you their contact information.

That's a pretty good deal.

Husband owns a paint/trim company. They give estimates based on how long the job will take, rather than by square foot, but a rough estimate for a whole house repaint is 1.25/sqft incl. paint.

That's great....if you aren't at all picky about the final product.

Trudat...I heard the Navy tried this strategy during WWI:

We're talking about painting. It's not rocket science.

He is talking about painting the interior of his house, not the garage.

No one claimed it was mentally difficult to paint, so your rocket science quip doesn't make any sense.

Bottom-line: A lot of people are crappy painters...they can't cut into corners, they paint unevenly, they are messy, they don’t care as much as you about the finished product, etc.....not to mention you lube them up with alcohol.

Can't believe I just wasted keystrokes explaining the obvious.

Your criticism of my posts have helped greatly with the OP's question though.

But it is a learned skill. I have seen so many crappy diy paint jobs in otherwise nice houses...

I recently bought a house and the people before me repainted some of the rooms themselves. You can walk into a room and know right away whether they repainted it or not. All the corners are terrible and some uneven layers.

Some of it isn't even skill, but material selection. My wife's sister had a $500K+ house and thought...it's paint, not rocket science. Painted with Wal-Mart eggshell finish paint and if you rub against it, it rubs off on your clothes and leaves a scuff mark on the wall. She cautioned my wife and I not to paint ourselves because 'it doesn't turn out'...we asked why, and responded...well, we're not planning on buying Wal-Mart paint. Used Sherwin Williams paint and asked for advice, looked great.

That being said, though...yeah, you have to be careful blowing off painting as 'not rocket science'...professionals know both techniques and materials that ensure good results. In the end, a lot of home improvement skills aren't technically difficult...but doing it well every time the first time is.
