Interesting quote from Pollard

This. Wrestling fans get all defensive but it's just not anything any AD is evaluated on. Outside of the local beats covering specific universities there is no coverage. It's not on ESPN, Sports Center doesn't talk about it, there is essentially no national level interest until the NCAA final on Saturday and than it is limited to the handful of schools that are good at it.

I like cross country. I even went out to see the gals run this fall in a meet. That's just me. I used to run. I am interested. I don't expect everyone else to like it because I do. And the AD sure as hell isn't going to be judged to harshly if the x-country team fails.

I'm not being defensive about the whole AD is hired and fired on football and basketball success, we all know that's the case, but for an ISU fan to call wrestling fans mouth breathers or to automatically dismiss anything to do with wrestling is ridiculous. ISU wrestling was about all the school had to be proud of in athletics for years. It's not the money maker and never has been, but I've been places where people saw my I State hat and started talking college wrestling because that's what they knew us from.

That being said...good hire by JP. After four plus decades as an ISU fan, I'm cautiously optimistic for the future. Just have to see how it all plays out.

If you look at who (at least reportedly) we interviewed when Chizik and CPR were hired, I don't think you can say JP made very good choices.

Also, while Chizik was applauded by many at the time, I would think anyone who actually gave him an interview would quickly see he is a bad fit for ISU. It's the AD's job to weed out those type of candidates from the pool but instead he bought in to his hype as a "hot up and coming" coordinator.

Jamie's target this time was specifically a head coach which seems to indicate he believes his last two hires were bad hires.

Your comment on the football coaches is very interesting....considering we just hired a new one two days ago. I just don't think Pollard is very good at evaluating coaching talent. He got the Hoiberg thing right, but any of us could have done that. His quotes about what he was looking for in a coach are essentially the opposite of CPR, whom he himself hired.

He is great for the university, but not at hiring coaches.

I would ask you this: IF we had a different AD, would the coaching hires have been better? You act like you think hiring a great coach should be simple and straight forward. Its not at all, and a lot of really good coaches do poorly at certain schools. I'll take JP's ability to evaluate coaching candidates over 90% of the AD's out there. Look at the struggles schools like Nebraska and Texas have had recently. Charlie Strong looks terrible at Texas, but does anyone actually think he's a bad coach? He was fantastic at Louisville so did the Texas AD make a horrible evaluation when he hired him?

The AD that hired Charie Strong was fired a few weeks ago. He was seen as too arrogant and one that made a bad decision to hire Charlie. Kind of a JP like personality, but at a big time school.

Anyone could have done that? Really? Sure it looks like a slam dunk now but how many ADs in the country would have hire a guy with ZERO coaching experience at any level?

I'm an executive recruiter and and I'm here to tell you people that think evaluating potential employees is so easy and predictable. You could make a lot of money.

“The most important thing I can do as an athletics director for our student-athletes is to hire the right head coaches,”

With the state of our Wrestling program and the way the last two football coaches have flamed out, I almost spit out my drink when I got to that line.

I kind of took his comments as "moving forward from here" and learning from his past mistakes

At the end of the day however Jamie is on his 4th head FB coach in 10 yrs

dude seriously WGAF? I bet Pollard was definitely trying to be a hypocrite when he hired the last two football coaches and wrestling coach. I guess someone else hired Hoiberg and Prohm too. Plus, lets not act like Rhoads was a complete failure. The dude did things for ISU football that no one has ever done here

so... fourteen years ago, before Jamie is hired.

Yes. ISU has always had a good wrestling following and never had much of a baseball following. Even with people being turned off by the bad wrestling now it would still outdraw baseball.

Jamie Pollard has setup the athletic department, the football program, and the basketball program for huge success. He hired coaches that were hot names and up and comers (Chizik & McDermott). They didn't win games. Pollard's job isn't to win games. I get that the blame/responsibility ultimately lands on him but it was Chizik and McDermott's job to win. And they didn't.

The Rhoads hire certainly wasn't celebrated by all here. A lot of people (me included) didn't even know who he was. And the first half of his tenure was certainly a success by Iowa State standards. The second half wasn't and he was replaced.

And those that say Hoiberg was a "slam dunk easy hire" are using hindsight to say that. Hoiberg was a VERY controversial hire.

I think Pollard has learned about searches along the way and has done a great job with the last 2 this year.

Everyone in the country liked both the Chizik hire and the CPR hire.

The fan base was pretty split on Hoiberg, with a lot of people thinking it was the dumbest move in the world. Outside of Ames, there were people literally laughing on the air about us hiring Hoiberg.

Your memory is incorrect, and your insight is insipid.

post can't be quoted enough.

Wrestling: No one cares. Football coaches: Both seemed like home run hires at the time...they didn't work out.

We have been so bad in Wrestling for So Long that Nobody Cares Anymore.......The football coaches that Jamie has hired were all Good Coaching Hires.........

Chizik was the hottest young coaching prospect in the country when Jamie hired him and I think Gene would have succeeded after getting rid of both of those Milestones around his neck...McFarland and Bolt.....

Paul Rhoads was a good solid hire at the time and took us to 3 bowl games( with GC's players).....Paul's biggest problem was handling personnel and trying to Out Spread Offense the Texas Competition ...that was never gonna work

Matt Campbell brings 2 things this program desperately needs right now ...ENERGY & CONFIDENCE....Best hire by Jamie by a mile.

Head Coaching Experience.....An Offensive style that fits our culture, in an area where you can actually recruit players for that system....notice Matt mentioned Bill Snyder

Great Recruiter...Did you notice the smile and twinkle in Matt's eyes when he said: "I love to Recruit".

Mark my words Matt Campbell will take us to the Next Level.........

Go Cyclones

When ISU has baseball Wrestling would outdraw it and it wasn't even close.

Shoot, the Men's Swim team would out draw the baseball team and were more successful too.

This fascination with baseball is comical.

Baseball isn't coming back in my lifetime unless CMC is wildly successful and stays for 20+ years.

At some point there has to be accountability.

Accountability is why Pollard gets full marks for Hoiberg. And not full marks for football. Since for me basketball is by far the biggest reason I support and give to ISU athletics, I can't say I'm unhappy with the state of the athletic department.

I know that everyone is not a wrestling fan, but I'm surprised by all of the hate for it on here.

I agree with many on here that Pollard has done some really good things for ISU, especially for football and basketball. However, I don't think he gives a **** about wrestling (the same as many of you), which really bothers me as a wrestling fan. I understand its not a revenue generating sport but it wouldn't take much more investment for us to be competing for a National Title, which we have historically done.
