INSIDER: Quick analysis on Rayjon Tucker

I think Memphis will put a lot of kids in the NBA but won't have a ton of success on the court. I just think they'll have a lot of 1 or 2 and done guys that are good college players but aren't around long enough to build a program. I see them dealing with THT type of players. Players who are just ready enough to get drafted but not dominant in college.

Memphis is expected to get a commitment from this guy today, FWIW.

Well now, a dilemma for me in how I hope the Quinones announcement plays out. This kid also has Indiana as a strong finalist, a team that ranks second only to ISU in my fandom. If only I knew how the potential butterfly effect of Lester's choice eventually plays out....

Next up is probably Brandon Roy as far as former players go

Really surprised a college team has not tried to get Derrick Fisher. He is stuck coaching the WNBA and I am pretty confident saying those coaches don't make a whole lot and hardly anyone tunes in to watch the product. Fisher still has a viable name to kids and I think he could recruit.
Avery Johnson was able to pull in talent. He just could not coach it for some reason.

40-96 career coaching record in the NBA and a DUI charge. I can't imagine why his phone isn't blowing up with offers.

Then again Nebraska just hired a coach that had a 115 wins and 155 losses as there head coach.
Arkansas just hired a coach that had 108 wins and 138 losses in the NBA.

Just sayin NBA coaching records mean nothing.

Both of those guys have had success at other college stops. Fisher has zero.

You know that does not matter either. Stackhouse, Hoiberg, Mussleman, Avery Johnson all had zero coaching experience in college before they were hired. The OWI charge might have something to do with it, however, tons of coaches have OWI's.

I thought the Penny hire was fantastic. Also think the Stackhouse hire was a good one. IF they can coach these guys will get players. Kids see NBA and jump at it. Fred got a lot of kids that way including Royce.

For a program like Memphis, the Penny move makes sense. But there's a huge difference between running an AAU program and coaching a major college basketball program. College coaches are machines, and the attention to detail is at a level most of the public has no conception of. Penny will win some games rolling the ball out against inferior competition, but he's going to get beat by a lot of experienced coaches. He's not Calipari.

Stackhouse has been in NBA coaching circles for awhile now. He will be a better coach, but he won't have the support that Penny gets in Memphis. If anyone has ever listened to Gary Parrish of CBS, you know that they live in a weird little bubble where Memphis basketball is a blue blood.

Calipari wasn't Calipari after 1 season of coaching experience, either. He started 10-18, then 17-14 and then 20-13. Penny may develop into an elite coach or he may be just another former player who can't get guys to do what he could just instinctually do. Who knows.

Penny is born and raised in the basketball rich city of Memphis so he is a legend there. They have a ton of good players that come up through that town. If he does no more than land all the local talent then he will field a good team.

Calipari coached under Larry Brown. Penny ran an AAU program. The odds of Penny delevoping the skills to be a top head coach in addition to being a top recruiter are slim.
