Insert next "Mac good for X job here"

Can't disagree Darts. Kind of like George II and weapons of mass destruction!!

Jeff,

I know you liked Walden, but I didn't(and I supported him much the same way I supported Mac when he was in charge.)

Mac left Ames one heck of a lot more graciously than Jim Walden did who practically bit off the arm of the entity feeding him.

Mac made it to more bowl games then anybody else. Fact.

Mac did a good job of filling up our stadium most of his years in Ames. Fact.

It's not Mac's fault that Gene Smith left and our next A.D. did not have the same vision or ablility to go after funding.

Gosh give this topic a rest. You Mac bashers are certainly passionate, but so are the Mac supporters. I think you're trying to rewrite history. He's gone. The games are done. Let it rest.:sad9cd:

I'd have mixed views on Mac working for the University now in some capacity. Yes he was a great ambassador, but he'd probably be a pretty big distraction now and if I was Coach Chizek I'd hate to have the old football coach in the foodchain looking over my shoulder.

Actually Bobber, I didn't really like Walden, I just think that it is unfair the way that he has been portayed by the people who were defending Mac. Look at the amount of money that the university spent on football with Mac, and the limited success that he had, yet people are unwilling to even consider that had the money been spent on a previous coach that he would have had at least equal success. I will say that Mac left the program in better shape, but not the shape that people on here are claiming. It is a 2-4 year rebuild, and after "the most successful era in Cyclone football" what does that say.

In terms of the bowl games Bobber, I think that you know the answers for that.

I am not going to argue that McCarney wasn't a helluva nice guy.

However, his leaving "graciously" may have been because he was allowed to resign (rather than be fired) and keep the remaining part of his contract. Usually, when you resign you forfeit the remaining terms of your contract. I don't recall what happened with Walden when he left because I was living in Maryland at the time and the internet was not yet available!

Mac Spin: The fact is that Mac made it to more bowl games then any other Cyclone coach.
McCarney Reality: While it is certainly true that ISU went to more bowl games under McCarney than any other coach, there has been such a proliferation of bowls in the last 10-15 years that it really is not that special to make a bowl...especially the bowls we were making. Today, over 50% of DI teams make bowls and you don't even have to have a winning record to qualify!

Mac Spin: The fact is that Mac did a good job of filling up our stadium.
McCarney Reality: Here are the "facts" from the ISU FB Press Guide. The McCarney era saw 69 home games and average attendance at these games was 40,900 (there were 3 crowds under 30,000 and 6 crowds over 50,000). Please note that 2006 is not included in the McCarney era numbers. The Walden era saw 48 home games and average attendance at these games was 39,900 (there was 1 crowd under 30,000 and 6 crowds over 50,000). The Criner era saw 26 home games and average attendance at these games was 44,800 (there were 0 crowds under 30,000 and 5 crowds over 50,000).

Mac Spin: It's not Mac's fault that he didn't work under an AD that had a vision or the ablility to go after funding.
McCarney Reality: Football is the largest driver of revenue in the athletic department. By default the FB coach becomes the top "Lieutenant" to the AD in fundraising efforts. Our new AD understands that mediocrity (or worse) is not acceptable in FB if we are to improve our athletic budget...that is why he dispatched McCarney.

Mac Spin: You Mac bashers are trying to rewrite history.
McCarney Reality: The die-hard McCarney supporters cannot come to grips with the reality that McCarney, although a helluva nice guy, was just not a very good coach and he was given far too long a tenure at ISU. The facts are:

McCarney, 12 years, 56-85 (.397) (9-35 (.205) in his first 4 years!)

Walden, 8 years, 28-57 (.329) (excludes ties)

Criner, 4 years, 17-25 (.405) (excludes ties)

Lastly, its Chizik not Chizek!
