Injuries, frustration huddle with Hawkeyes

And with Jake Christensen at QB it is important to have good tacklers on offense too.

Actually, he doesn't turn the ball over very much. It's the lack of mobility and taking sacks under pressure that is the problem.

The offensive struggles worry me, but this happens at every open practice/spring game I've been to and they always look better when the actual season rolls around. No matter how bad the offense is, this defense will keep them in EVERY game. I've said it before, this will be one of the best front 7s Iowa's ever had.

I agree that the D will keep Iowa in games. The question is if the offense can put up enough points to help out the D.

Isn't the secondary questionable, though? That could be the D's Achilles Heel.

The situation at Iowa this year reminds me somewhat of Mac's last year in Ames. We were coming off a disappointing end to the last season, just like the Hawks are this year. Both teams struggled with offseason arrests and players getting kicked off the team. Both teams struggled with injuries to key players. Both teams had experienced, but bad offensive lines. Both teams planned to rely heavily on JUCOs at key positions (Greene at RB for Iowa; Eboh at DE for ISU, who never made it to school). Both fan bases told themselves everything was alright and they would win more games than they had won the previous few seasons. ISU went 4-8 and Mac got fired. We'll see what happens with Iowa, but don't be surprised if the similarities continue.

I try not to take too much out of the article because it's just a scrimmage but wow, this really stuck out:

"Hawkeye quarterbacks were sacked 17 times and threw five interceptions"

I don't know why but I really feel like iowa is making their situation seem way worse than what it really is. I feel like they are playing the expectations game, hoping everyone thinks they are terrible, then when they come out and win some games the fan base is satisfied. I am probably totally wrong, just a gut feeling.

Wow, it's official:

Before you assume the fetal position and go to your happy place, the Hawkeyes' top three receivers — Andy Brodell (lower back soreness), Tony Moeaki (broken foot) and Trey Stross (hamstring) — sat out with injuries.

Confirmation of what Jon Miller reported. Despite being an All-American according to Iowa fans, DJK is not even the 3rd best receiver on his own team.

Yep. Really sad story of vindication. After a cup of green Gatorade was unwisely tossed in his direction, Tony Moeki chased down Andy Brodell directly adjacent to the fawning EIU cheerleaders. He proceeded to drop kick Brodell into the back legs of Trey Stross. That is how he broke his foot, dented the Andy's back who clumsily clipped the Treys hammie.

Moe, Larry, Curly at its finest: :goofy::err:

Remember, Iowa basically gets a free pass with their first two games. Their third string could beat Maine, and Florida Int. is in only their second season of having a football program. They were 1-11 last year. This will give Iowa an additional 3 weeks to heal before they play Iowa State. So the injury and lack of practice time should be a moot point by the time they play us.

Don't forget that DJK is the teams leading returning rusher from last year with 19 yards.

Is this a good thing? Maybe Captain K is using Hayden Fry psychology and browbeating his team and lowering expectations...then again, maybe they really suck as bad as last year.

. "Hawkeye quarterbacks were sacked 17 times and threw five interceptions. Longest run...an 11-yarder against the third-team defense.

"I don't know how many points we averaged last year (18.5 points, last in the Big Ten), but if we practice the way we did today, we'll be on the same path," Ferentz said. "We're trying to avoid that certainly."

Usually they put a green shirt on the qb to save him from injury. Guess they do not care about Jake.

I get the feeling Ferentz doesn't want to be at iowa anymore...just a feeling...

i hope those injuries aren't there when they play us...otherwise we'll get the SAME OLD FREAKING EXCUSE for losing to us. Even if the ONLY player out with a injury is the backup longsnapper, they'll still use it...

GREAT coaches don't have assistants that the game has been passed by.

I think ISU gave up 17 sacks all of last year.

Really? King is good, I'll give you that, Kroul is above average, and Edds has been pretty overrated for most of his career. Other than that, who supports this claim? I'd be very surprised if they come close to the acclaim of the teams with Greenway, Hodge, Roth, Babineaux, etc.

How can their front 7 lose 2 of the 3 leading tacklers, and one of the better DE in the league, yet somehow be the best in history? Hawk fans continue to astound me with their logic.

totally agree...they'll be a good front 7, the DB's, meh, IDK. But I see no proof that would make one think they'll be the best front 7 in iowa's history.

BTW - I think you meant to say Edds has been underrated most of his career?
