In state football recruits

Wartknight, a follow-up question? Do the name-brand (Nike, etc.) camps overlap with college camps? All in the summer months? I got the impression, from your post, that some college camps are underway now. . . .

Don't believe so. I don't know of any college camps that take place before the summer. Has to do with timing. Spring ball followed by spring ball for high schools (Iowa one of few that doesn't have it)> Then more time for kids in summer. I haven't followed much of the name brand camps because I think they are primarily a money grab. I saw kids that were high school backups getting invited to the "elite" camps only because they had been to others and filled out questionnaire.

I totally agree. I think most years the talent in the state is UNDER rated. This year it seems that the kids are getting the offers they should be.

I personally think Kallenberger is the best of the bunch, he may end up with Oklahoma type offers. Vance will get more offers when his grades get up to snuff, so hopefully the staff got the jump on that and can hold teams off on him. Lombardi would get more offers if he was a LB rather than a QB. Dykstra looks great on film, but I know little else on him. I hope we get 6 of these in state kids, that would be a GREAT haul.

He has picked up offers from Iowa and Michigan State and Virginia and Iowa St so far. More to come most likely.

I'm going to say no, we can't. That said the caliber of programs that we can beat out for recruits has gotten better, I think. Beating out middling P5 teams rather then FCS teams is a start. We aren't beating out top 10 programs for OL's just yet.

Iowa and Wisconsin have long been some 9f the best Oline evaluators and recruiters and for good reason. OU and Nebraska have been great at snagging the guys with p5 ready bodies in the region as well.

I understand your stance, and it makes some sense. Personally, if I was a coach, I would tell the kid he'll get his offer when his grades are better and see how he responds to the challenge.

You don't have to be even marginally intelligent to pass high school courses. If a kid is failing I see it as an effort issue, which would be a huge red flag for me as a coach.

I think this is a little naive. I played with kids in HS that came from families that didn't provide academic supports and it was not an effort issue nor were they "dumb". Some kids fall behind early and don't have the building blocks to succeed in HS and it is also their ACT score. One friend had major problems with Algebra, I didn't get it as I could just show up and take the test but he just could grasp the abstract thought required. Another had dyslexia that was never diagnosed and had no idea basic writing principles like a 5 paragraph theme and had a heck of a time passing English etc. One was a partial qualifier that went to Iowa on Scholarship (he actually wanted to go to ISU and Mac wanted him bad but in the brand new Big 12 we couldnt take partial qualifiers). The other had strong interest from Nebraska and everyone bUT was told he had to pass Algebra or get a high enough ACT score, despite tutors he didn't and went JUCO. He ended up graduating from ISU but quit football after underperforming in JUCO.

These are both quality people that are successful in life and ended up becoming the first members of their family ever to get college degrees. It isn't simply an effort issue.

Pretty deep year for recruiting in Iowa. Lots of kids with D1 offers already, and I'm sure a few more will get offers as well.

We have a commit from Vance & Moore, and we have the following offers out to in state kids.

OL - Kallenberger - Bettendorf
QB - Lombardi - Valley
OL - Newell - Ames
OL - Dykstra - Spirit Lake
OL - Kleinow - IC West
LB - Hummell - Dowling

I love the fact we are targeting more Iowa kids (especially OL). Iowa turns out pretty good OL kids, and we should be getting more of those in state kids.

I have heard from some people I trust that we are close to offering Duwa as well. He just picked up a Minnesota offer, and we want him to come and visit. Don't be surprised to see an offer before he even before he visits. If not before, I'm 99% sure he will get an offer after visiting.

Picked up Hummell and Newell (great, great gets!) Lost out on Dykstra, Lombardi, and Kallenberger which is disappointing. Also just saw Duwa committed to Iowa. This one is odd to me as I had it on pretty good authority that ISU was going to offer, but never ended up offering, so I was way off from what I heard on that one.

The amount of high D1 talent this year in Iowa HS football is really incredible. I really wished we could have nabbed some more of them, but we have a solid core of Iowa kids, which helps narrow the focus for more needs on a national level.

Not like there was much of chance to get him anyway. The guy could walk from his high school to Iowa City in about 10 minutes.

The total tally right now sits at 12 in-state kids committed to Power 5 programs for next year (Iowa-6, ISU-4, Miami(Fla)-1, Mich St-1) and 1 FBS, non-P5 commit (Nank to Miami(Oh). There are still a handful of uncommitted kids with lower-level FBS offers still out there, and obviously the Power 5 offers are most certainly not done yet.

An article on the Minnesota Scout site from yesterday or today says that they are close to offering Devontae Lane from Iowa City West as a WR. I literally had no idea that he even played football until reading that article. His Rivals profile lists a basketball offer from ISU (supposedly made under the Hoiberg regime, almost certainly not valid currently).

And according to Rivals, Alex Kleinow, OL from Iowa City West, has had an ISU offer for quite some time now. I wonder if that's still valid with all the line commits already on board?

Incredible, incredible year for in-state talent.

Im guessing that Kleinow does not have a commitable offer from ISU. They have 3 committed and I would think will be pretty picky on the fourth if there is one. I bet he ends up at UNI. Interesting about Duwa. ISU just wasn't that sold on him even with the Minny offer. They definitely do not have trouble handing out offers, so he must have been down their list a ways. I don't know if it's true or not that they were "about to offer". If it is, they must have missed out on some targets. Seems like the DEs they like...one in KC, 2 in TX, 2 in OH...are still on the board.

Awesome year for instate talent. I still think Vance is the best player in the state. Haven't heard anything on how his grades are coming along. I think the plan for Duwa is to play inside. Could be a guy that just doesn't fit the scheme.

I would guess that's it. He's a little short for a DE. Maybe not mobile enough to play Leo and drop into coverage. Seems like the ISU staff likes bigger run stuffers inside while iowa takes kids like Klug and wants to grow them to be a disrupter. Not saying ISU could've beaten them for the kid anyway, just reading into why they didn't offer.

This is an interesting thread, informative, civil and sans silly gifs. Good stuff guys, thanks.

I think Vance and Kallenberger are 1a and 1b for best players in the state. I don't really know what went on with Duwa during his visit to ISU. I had heard he was going to be picking up an offer, but maybe there was some misunderstanding in Duwa's camp. Or maybe during the visit the coaches didn't like the vibe they got from Duwa, or they just didn't click. It happens, and the good coaches know when to step away from a recruit.

Kind of nice not having to offer our fall back guy, and him going to Iowa. Probably would have went there either way, but we still got guys our staff wanted more.

Well it is early yet, so by definition CMC SHOULDN'T be offering our fallback guys. I think it stinks that Duwa got offered by the Hoks, because if CMC misses on his top DE's, he then doesn't have an in state guy who he could put the full court press on. Getting 2* nobodies as fallbacks is one thing, Duwa as a fallback would have actually been nice if CMC missed on his top targets.
