HS Playoffs

I went to Carroll high and graduated in 2000 and then Kuemper had a higher enrollment but by a slim margn. Carroll High is now the higher enrollment. Thr thing with Kuemper is they should be 3A school. They are on the border with enrollment so they are prolly the buggest or one one of the bigger 2A schools. They have have been 3A forever til the last couple years or so. Think its a bunch of bs that they are 2A but never been a fan of those spoon fed yuppies from the other side ot town.

At this point in time and I had to move with my superstar elementary aged son to Carroll, I would send him or her to Kuemper for basketball, and definitely Carroll High for a football future. Kuemper for volleyball. and Harlan for baseball. (just kidding about baseball, but Harlans baseball coach is really good.)

Tell that to all the scholls around those small private schools. They recruit from the area every year.

Its a huge advantage.. they should have to play up a class. St alberts is a good example.

;3714411]Again my response is that there are not enough private schools to make this possible in Iowa. These are the private schools playing 3A or 4A football right now, with the size that they "actually are" listed:

West Des Moines Dowling - 4A
Cedar Rapids Xavier - 3A
Dubuque Wahlert - 3A
Sioux City Heelan - 3A
Davenport Assumption - 2A

With the exception of Heelan, all of these schools are already playing 4A football. The rest of the private schools in Iowa are all 2A-sized or smaller and playing at the size that they are.

So you can't put them in their own conference because there aren't enough of them, and I guess you could make them play up, but most of the big ones are already doing that (Xavier, Wahlert, Assumption). You could bump the smaller schools up a class though, but it wouldn't have a real impact at the 4A level.

And I don't think the recruiting exists at that smaller level. I went to a small Catholic school in NW Iowa & there was zero recruiting at my school or at the other smaller Catholic schools in the area.[/QUOTE]

Kuemper must start recruiting early as every starter was enrolled in the Kuemper system as grade schoolers. We could use those guys recruiting for us. Class of 2020?

Private schools should be required to play up one conference or play in a conference all their own... Discuss...

You realize the kids from Dowling start playing organized football in first grade. There are ten Catholic elementary/junior high schools in the DSM Catholic school system, so when they funnel into one school vs. multiple high schools it makes a difference. As for playing up a conference, who is Dowling going to play, they are in the largest class already?

Greater Des Moines Catholic Football, Youth Football, Des Moines, Central Iowa

Also, IC Regina has won three straight championships, ever consider the fact they have good coaching? They are competing against two public high schools with solid football traditions in Iowa City. Heelan has been strong for years, Kuemper and Don Bosco both came back in the 4th quarter to win, otherwise it would have been a 50/50 split between regular and private schools.

Getting back to the original question, can private schools recruit and do the award scholarships? The answer is yes to both. In the case of:scholarships, they provide based on financial need- so yes athletes and non-athletes can be on scholarship.

They have the ability to recruit since they are not bound by traditional school disticts, but in areas like DSM there is open enrollment. So even kids going to public school can choose the best school for their sport.

I think private schools benefit from structure and discipline that are instilled in the K-8 grades. Generally the families in private schools have more financial resources. I think the communities emphasis on sport is higher than most schools. That isn't exclusive to private schools, the WDM community places a hugh emphasis on athletics.

This argument is asinine.

Let me paint it differently. If my son/daughter was a way above average sports star in grade school, I would definitely "shop" for a school for them to play at, just to give them a better chance at success. Living away from metropolitan areas limits these opportunities. You really have to appreciate successful extracurricular programs from rural areas. They have what they have.
Just so you know, "shopping around" for a school to pay for your kid to go to is different than the school sending letters and offering to harbor your kid for sports.

They recruit kids to the catholic football league, no joke.

Really? When nearly all kids in that system have been there since early elementary grades?

I'm sure there are tons of coaches out there that can gauge athletic development when a kid joins kindergarten.
