Game Recap: Iowa St vs Texas Tech

by SF Ute
2010-10-05 16:26:08

I saw this game replayed on Fox College Sports today.

Recap:
Iowa St. was averaging a putrid 20 points a game until this game against TT.
They were a very inspired team on every play and throughout the game. Expect them to be VERY pumped playing against the #10 team in nation from a non AQ conference(Sorry, future Pac12 team).
The commentators mentioned the upcoming Utah game multiple times and gave the program props.
Iowa St raced out to a 24-0 lead on some big plays.TT came roaring back to tie it 24-24. Then Iowa St. took another lead to hang on at the end 52-38 win. The last TD was an onside scoop that Iowa St ran in ...crazy.The fans look very enthusiastic but it didnt seem too loud on opponents offensive plays.

Offense:
#4 Arnaud QB- Nimble on his feet and likes to run sometimes but has no speed whatsoever. Kind of like Wynn in a way. No threat. He does have a good strong arm and is somewhat accurrate. He was better on shorter routes than deep balls even though he completed on a deep pass. He has an injured left shoulder that bothered him all game. Before this game he had 2 TDs/ 5 INT. He had 4 TDs in this game with no INTs.

#33 Robinson RB- Kid is nails. Hes quick and fast. Hits hole and flies up the field. He will be the #1 stop for the Utes. He had over a 100 yards and a TD on limited carries.
He was 3rd in Big 12 in rushing last yr.

#25 Johnson RB- Freshman. He had his first 100 yard game with a TD. Hes also lightening quick like Robinson yet smaller. He will be also #1A on the Utes radar.

#32 Woody RB/FB: This is a bigger back whom gets short yardage stuff and an occassional carry or two. Didnt show me much in this game.

#88 Franklin TE- #1 target for their QB. He was open all over field and produced big numbers. Watch this guy closely.

#86 Hammerschmidt TE- also a target and used a lot in goal line set ups. This team focuses on their TE's big time.

#7 Reynolds WR- Fast wideout and their deepthreat. Didnt have too many targets his way though.Caught the one bomb.
#83 Williams & #19 Lenz WR- Both are possession type receivers and had a few balls their way.
Their receivers didnt seem to get much seperation, plus, the commentators said they have been struggling. Hence, the TE's being used heavily. Franklin will be the one to watch out for.

Defense:
To be honest. I couldnt really see any one individual player that stood out to me. They are a bend dont break type D. They give up underneath stuff. They were also beaten deep a few times though. #6 Reeves is a cornerback that is small and got picked on bigtime.
They seem to give up the running yards too. TT is not known for running but they had some big yardage gains when they ran.
The delayed screen killed Iowa St too.
The defense is suspect to me and I feel we can put some points up on the board against them.

Special Teams:
Solid. They came close to blocking two punts in the game which raised an eye brow or two from me considering we have been weak there. So expect that they will be bumrushing us on punts. Dont be surprised if we fake punt to negate that.

Analysis:
Turnovers have been the story for each game this yr. If we can limit them or at least be on the positive we should be ok.
Their offense has had one good game against a team that usually gives up points. Other than that they have struggled. But, their coach Paul Rhodes has them sold on the fact they will win this game. They will be pumped big time.
We should be able to score over 30 points easily. Their defense got limited pressure on the QB and we rank #1 in country in that category, I think.
I believe the tandom of Asiata bruising them up the middle and running Eddie "wide" will put them on their heels. Watch for Eddie to have a big game here.
We have more playmakers then they do overall on both sides of ball.
Being this game is on the road against a team that believes in the coach and system I wouldnt be surprised to see a close game that could actually go either way.
Their two RBs and TE are the players to watch for .
For the Utes sake,we stop the run and we win handily.
TT is very similiar to us on passing plays underneath.
I believe our speed will prevail.
Keeping dumb penalties and TOs down will put us in great shape!

Prediction: Utah 35- Iowa St. 24

Thanks for posting, interesting to see what outsiders thing. Disagree with a few things but overall pretty accurate.

I think there's something that you wouldn't know from watching just the Texas Tech game, and most probably wouldn't think to look it up. We're 13th in the nation in red zone defense, giving up a score on only 66% of our opponents red zone possessions. That's the major reason that our scoring defense has been decent the past couple of years (we finished #2 in the nation last year right at 66%). We're going to need that red zone defense to show up this week, I think.

Arnaud is not a speed burner, but he is definately a run threat. He actually surprised me with the break away run at the beginning of the Northern IL game. After he broke through the line no one on NIU seemed to close much ground on him. He was very limited in the running game because of a sore shoulder. I suspect he will be healthier for the Utah game.

The analysis called Arnaud "no threat" in terms of running ability. I agree that he's not a blazing speedster, but he's definitely a threat running the ball when healthy.

I'm starting to get annoyed by these Ute fans thinking they are going to win so easily. Yeah, they might, but they haven't done anything yet to show me that they will plow right through us. I thought the Pitt win was impressive after week 1 but I'm starting to wonder. All they have to go off of is how they looked against weak opponents. We'll see what happens.
There program has two bcs bowl victories in there recent history, and there current coach has had quite the run since taking over for Urban. Its pretty small minded to say there fans shouldn't be confident just because there schedule at the beginning of the season setup nicely.

Small minded, whaaaa? Never said they shouldn't be confident and I don't care what they've done in the past. All I'm saying is they don't have much to go off of based on what they've done this season. It's a little annoying, that's all.

tiller does not run a 4.5

LOL

Utah's backup does...

Arnaud will not run past anyone, but he will run you over. The play he got hurt he dragged KSU's DE for atleast 5 yards to get a first down. He's also very shifty.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, my first time posting on your forum. just wanted to say that 99% of the Ute fans are absolutely looking forward to this game and are relishing the great challenge that it presents to the team. we understand that we have played a very overrated/bad Pitt team and three of the worst teams in college football and as such are probably not worthy of the #10 ranking we have at this point. to put it bluntly we got into the rankings after what looked like a good win over a decent Pitt team and then benefited tremendously from teams ahead of his in the rankings losing. we WANT to find out what our team is made of and the game this weekend is one of the first real opportunities we have to do so.

anyways, i just wanted to address the quote above, if you go to our message board (utefans.net) and read the messages about the game this weekend you would understand that most of the fans on the board are very wary of the game. i will admit that a week ago that most ute fans thought we would probably win the game, if not easily, but that thought is all but gone after the bitchslapping you gave texas tech last weekend (nice win btw). we understand you guys are a good team, maybe not great, but definitely not a team we can just go through the motions and expect to be competitive against. if we arent on our game then we will lose.

if any of you want to come over to our board and talk some football, by all means. we love making connections with new fanbases and learning about the teams we play.

Good to know/hear. My comment was just based on what a few Utah people have said on here. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or anything because you guys have given us a lot of cred so far. There were just a few things the OP and some others have said that I take exception to, that's all.

Good first post. I've tried going to your message board. I use my blackberry to browse usually, and it's impossible to do. May have to give it a try on my laptop though, as I love reading what people have to say about the upcoming game.

Oh, I agree it was a good assessment.

I REALLY hope they keep thinking Arnaud isn't a running threat.

Arnaud is not a threat as long as he is hurt. Judging by the way, he looked last saturday, he will not run unless forced. The zone read will be worthless and I am guessing that is one reason for the change
Let's hope he feels better this week than last week. I doubt he will as it is hard to get healthy when playing.

Good breakdown. I would say Arnaud is a bigger threat to run when healthy but his injury limits him.

I think you are right on with Asiata running up the middle and Wide on the outside. Asiata doesn't worry me as much because I think we are better up the middle than we were against iowa and KSU. Reump has played well and McDonough is more consistent with his pad level. Throw Klein and Knott improving. Wide on the edge is a bigger concern for me. Our DEs are just not here, yet and can be manhandled.
One thing you missed and we showed it in the TT game is prior to TT we had penalties 60% of our drives that reached scoring position (inside the 35) and 56% of the time we reached the red zone. Against TT we broke that curse. Our first drive we had a penalty that stalled a drive and led to a field goal (same as every other time we get a penalty). After that, no penalties and drives ended in TDs. If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot, we are a very competent offense.

I would expect that ARob and or Franklin should have a big game this week if Utah continue to blitz. Just looking at stats, It seems your LBs and Chapman are used a ton to create pressure. They seem to have the most sacks and TFL of anyone on the team. I think ARob and Shontrelle both showed the ability to make big plays if they get past that blitz. I also like our lines ability to pick up the blitz. TT was a good warm up for what Utah will throw at us. It will be different and more aggressive but it is nice to have a taste first.

AS is every week, we will need to be good on first and second down in order to keep Utah off their feet. If we get in obvious passing downs, they will kill us with the blitz. It will be interesting to see if they use Chapman to cover Franklin ina anickel. Kinda like we use Benton.

Good Analysis.

The WR's were not able to get seperation - TRUE. The TT game was about the best job they were able to do this season.

ISU has played a much tougher schedule so far this year. I would hope that pays off for ISU.

I'm surprised the guy said he saw nothing from Woody. Woody single-handedly (at least with the offensive line) drove 50+ yards to set up a play-action TD pass. I remember commenting lewd things involving Woody while he was being handed the ball every play and picking up 5 a try.

Woody did great that drive; however, he was stuffed on just about every 3rd and short play during the game up until that point
