Hoiberg's post game comments

Id disagree that height is the main issue. A few of our players have a tendancy to watch shots versus box out. Even Fran called them on it a couple times. Also hard to rebound when you are glaring at and whining to the refs versus keep playing when there is a live ball.

there is definitely some laziness that sneaks in from time to time which is worse than just not being tall enough.

Remember last year when Illinois got off to that torrid start, but then fell off when their three point shooting cratered? This is kind of following that. Hopefully we can find our shooting stroke.

Illinois Fighting Illini Basketball 2012-13 Schedule - Fighting Illini Home and Away - ESPN

Give credit where credit is due though, Joel Embiid affected a lot of our shots that game. Not many schools have that type of player, so being that terrible in the paint shouldn't continue.

That doesn't make me feel any better considering they were a 7 seed. After the way we started anything less then a 5 seed is a disappointment.

We rebounded horribly. When you clank that many threes as we did, we had WAAAY more opportunities for offensive rebounds. We also missed plenty of point blank shots, which are also prime for offensive rebounds. We got absolutely dominated on the glass as bad as a major conference team can.

But...we do not send 3 or 4 guys to the offensive glass. I think we were concerned about KU's transition game and wanted to try to force them to play half court, which we did for the most part. But, KU is taller and more athletic and got tips to themselves. They not only crushed us on the boards but they had their way with us in the paint and positioned themselves well for the boards. If they continue with how they played last night they will make a deep, deep run in the tourney.

As far as our guys, we missed a lot of layups but give KU credit - Their length inside bothered us.

We will be ok, but I think we may be in a funk for a couple more games before getting our mojo back.

Probably should have worked on rebounding technique after OU abused us on the offensive glass and caused our first loss of the season, don't ya think?

Thank GOD we started losing. I am willing to bet that you were on suicide watch with nothing to be negative about.

It is so funny that you never ever ever hear from some posters unless we lose games.

I disagree, we were aggressive, just missed 3 bunnies, and KU took advantage. Could not get anything to fall. The threes are one thing, but we have not missed that many lay ups all year.

This. I thought Tharp knocking down shots to start the game was the biggest thing for them. They jumped out early, and that took some of the nerves away from their freshmen. Then Wiggins banked in that 18 foot jump shot, and was able to get out in transition, and that got them off and running.

We had a ton of misses at the rim. Part was their length, but part was just being unlucky. I thought the effort was good, it was almost like they were too hyped, and then got behind, and then started pressing.

The officials were pretty standard big 12. Amazing that ESPN did not mention anything about last year's game. The refs let Embiid get away with a LOT. He is a talented player, but how many elbows does he get to throw??? He's going to hurt somebody.

And the big 12, in a typical **** bushleague worthless small time move, they did finally foul him out. But it was when the game was really out of reach. He hit Melvin just as hard, but there was time left for Iowa State to come back, and the whistle was swallowed.

KU is very talented. Looking forward to their 10th conference title, a high seed, and an early exit because they don't get bailed out....You can set your watch to it, rinse lather and repeat

It's been more than 24 hours since December 13. That game was an indicator for how rebounding would go against the top Big 12 teams. The shooting held up that night so ISU was able to pull out a victory, but there hasn't been much improvement in the rebounding since that game. The rebounding differential against Iowa was about the same as it was against KU.

Hmmm...twice now in 24 hours. I guess some people like to discuss basketball, and some people like to complain about other posters. To each his own.

That said, your infatuation with my posts is kind of creepy.

Don't flatter yourself, you are not that cool.

I just think what a miserable existence you must lead only being happy with anything when it fails.

We have had some outstanding wins, and nothing from you and your super friend dude, but two losses, and here you both are to pile on. It is sad, you must be awsome to hang out with.

Pretty hard to address issues and put in a game plan for the most talented team in the league in 1 day there fella. Got time this week to address some of the issues and hopefully get the kinks worked out.

Rebounding isn't a "game plan" its a fundamental. They work on that all the time.

I am sure he used that one day of prep time to great effect. That should have been enough to correct it, don't ya think?:plaugh:

Well, this team has a bit of adversity now. Maybe this will be a good thing for the guys and they'll regroup/refocus. Work on some things this week, get some rest and be ready to play hard down in Austin. Huge game on Saturday!

GO CYCLONES!

Disappointed we shot so poorly 2 games in a row, but shooting comes and goes. Much more disappointed how poorly we rebounded 2 games in a row, however. Actually, just looked and we've been outrebounded 4 out of 4 conference games. That's not a pretty statistic and going to be tough winning games like that going forward.

Honest question: Was our apparent early season rebounding a mirage against inferior opponents or what?

Disagree. Missing as many shots as we did is not going to help your rebounding. Sure, you may get more offensive rebounds (and we did), but that is going to be outpaced by the defense getting more.

This loss was foremost on shooting. A guy like what Tharpe is for them went off, while a guy like Georges is for us shot as bad as I have seen a Cyclone shoot. As a team. shots near the basket, 3Ps, and FTs were are all poor, if not horrible, yet we had a chance with a few minutes left. Sure our defense and rebounding could be better, but when you play small ball you are conceding that to a certain degree so that you kill it on offense.

They did a poor job at OU, but that guy is the leading offensive rebounder in the conference for a reason.

The Baylor and KU games were due to length, and that is something that we will not be able to rememdy this year.

But in spite of all of that, if we just make 4 more shots, and we win both games.

This is still a good and tough minded team. KU played their best game I have seen them play this year. The team that I saw even in a win against duke would have lost last night.

You could tell that they were pointing to this game, and they were really up. A couple shots falling early, made all the difference for them.

All you need to know is that NIU got 21 offensive rebounds. Of course, many had concerns before that, but that is when it became indisputable we are not a good rebounding team. As a smaller team, we needed to have four or five guys make rebounding a priority, but we usually only have only two or three.
