Hindsight Ohio Game

Agreed, but how often is it the same teams every year? Yeah, teams will have dumb losses, but it seems to me that we always have that dumb loss, whereas most teams will have that random loss once every several years.

Not trying to argue about this, and I certainly see where you are coming from. I just feel like we are either having a terrible loss, or at least nail-biting out a squeaker every year against teams we should throttle.

The blue bloods are about the only ones I can think of where a notable bad loss is super uncommon.

Otherwise I'd guess it happens more often than we as ISU fans realize.

I don’t know. But I’m guessing none of us follow other teams close enough to know.

Hell Texas has had dumb losses every year.

That’s not saying that our September crap isn’t annoying and that everyone should ignore it. But we should also realize it’s common.

The more I see the season unfold, I think Ohio was a hell of a lot more about a bunch of guys being sick as dogs and probably in no shape to play.

Which to Coach's credit. You never hear it used as an excuse.

Likely won't hear about it from the coaches until after the season (thinking CW's podcast with Campbell). The podcast after season is where we learned that much of the team wasn't practicing the weeks leading up to the Louisiana game in 2020 (due to COVID holdouts).

Idk, but I'm getting the feeling that the Ohio game brought about the changes that absolutely needed to happen on offense. It really sucks to lose that game, but the growth that has come out of it has been awesome.
I think another change that's happened is Campbell has gone from, "playing not to lose" to, "playing to win" after the Oklahoma State game. Oklahoma State should never have been allowed to come back in that game and thankfully Tampa sealed it with an INT. Excluding the OU game, Iowa State has put it's foot down and kept it down. CW has pointed out in yh Cincinnati game, Iowa State did not go to the usual strangle hold and run the clock out. They kept their foot on the gas. Playing to win.

1st paragraph--there's sick, and then there's norovirus. Several players a week are not going to be sick, and they won't have norovirus. When that stuff spreads though, it's fast and can wipe someone out for a couple of days. It's awful.
I got norovirus two weeks ago. I still don't feel right. But those first three days, I didn't want to move any more than I had to. I basically didn't eat, had no appetite. I drank Powerade. I laid as still as possible. I've never vomited so hard in my life. Now, I realize a 20-year-old kid is going to handle it better than I did, but I can't imagine anyone playing football with that illness.

This thread is full of "tell me you've never had norovirus without telling me you haven't had norovirus".

It's HIGHLY contagious. It's super easy to see how it could spread in a locker room or football facility. I was once in a situation where everyone around me was getting super sick and I was literally the only one who didn't. Tons of otherwise fit/healthy people were needing IV fluids just to recover. I was astounded by my luck until I later learned that some can have genetic resistance, and I won that lottery (23andMe).

If norovirus went through the team, it easily could have had a major effect on the game.

Typical.

That Ohio game should be viewed like the Louisiana game in 2020 when coronavirus had taken out part of the team.
Huge outliers. Not saying there have not been any changes since the beginning of the year. I just think the Ohio game was more "what can we do" vs "what we would like to do" based on how many people were sick.

100%. The only people saying it didn’t have an impact on the game have clearly never had Norovirus before.

You literally can’t eat, drink, or leave bed for 24-48 hours. It’s not a cold you can easily gut out. It kills 200,000 people annually worldwide

I came here to congratulate you guys on your victory over the Bearkittens, and all I see is continual whining about losing to OHIO. Get over it, You lost and I doubt the norovirus was the major cause. Except for last Saturday, when our team sleepwalked through a game at NIU, our defense has been very tough this year, especially against the run. The weather was bad in Dekalb, and the wind was blowing the ball all over the place, but we are not obsessed with blaming anything but a crappy performance by the Bobcats and a well-coached and well executed game by NIU. Give OHIO a little credit.

BTW, I watched just about all of your game against UC and was rooting for you all the way. Not too much love lost between our two schools. And, the more you win the better it makes the boys from Athens look.

We shouldn’t need to lose to a MAC team to motivate our coaches to play to win. Glad that it happened, but it shouldn’t need to happen.

Rebuttal. I didn't think I needed to but ok.

Preface: I've had norovirus, along with forty co-workers from the food served at a company meeting in Madison, WI. Documented case investigated over the course of weeks by the Dane County Department of Health, with citations levied. I was interviewed by an investigator, as were all of my co-workers - it was a big deal. The findings report, issued some time later, was disgusting - caused by fecal matter because some food service worker didn't wash his hands properly. The symptoms varied amongst us, from a short bout of vomiting to hospitalization, but NOBODY was doing anything other than sleeping while stricken.

My opinion, with emphasis placed on the word opinion.

I haven't seen "norovirus" mentioned anywhere other than here and WRNL. A Register article mentions possible "food poisoning" affecting five or six players - that's the extent of what I've read in the public realm, as other on-line articles are using the Register as source material. Postscript: I haven't spent a massive amount of time searching and it was several days ago.

Many people in this thread are accepting norovirus as reality, based on the word of a couple Cyclone insiders, then speculating as to how many players were affected. I'm opposed to the speculation, plus I don't think we need to make excuses for the loss. We have a large squad for the express purpose of replacing injured (or sick) players on short notice. We played poorly - Ohio U played well and we lost. Period - no excuses required.

As for the "dumb(s)", I "saw red" and reciprocated against those who made light of my opinion. My apologies - it's just a message board and I should be big enough to step away. I'll try to do better moving forward...

Not antagonizing, merely advising you to listen to the Williams and Blum podcast the Sunday after the game. Not premium. Blum confirms norovirus, incident(s) on the plane and bus rides, which only got worse through Sunday.

Norovirus or food poisoning, we don't know how many people were sick; if they all ate the same meal it's likely not just a few guys.

And while ISU seemingly has better depth than most years, it's still not as strong as 'next man up' and someone like Noel being out for the entire game changes things drastically.

FWIW the sickness only added to what was already a bad game by ISU; their anti-rhythm approach to offense was still there and overall they looked like they normally do in September. Sadly they still had chances to pull it out.

I'm not going to hold that game as the reason ISU doesn't get to a bowl. The next three games are absolutely winnable and should be the difference. If ISU can't find two more wins that's imo a bigger problem than a game in September.

With all due respect, neither Blum nor Harklau are medical doctors and I doubt the ISU Medical Staff was equipped to analyze stool samples for norovirus RNA on the road trip.

Again, just my opinion, but a large scale outbreak of norovirus amongst a college football team, such as is being suggested here, would be investigated by public health officials and even if not, would definitely be newsworthy. It's been several weeks and there's been nothing on the story.

In closing, whether it was norovirus or stomach flu doesn't really matter. We know a minimum of five football players were ailing, which hampered our efforts. MG30 objects to my use of the phrase "next man up", but we don't have a squad of 100+ players just for practices! We lost to a Ohio U team which made more plays than we did on that day - end of story - no excuses, especially those based on speculation.

On to Baylor, firing on all cylinders and relatively healthy, I hoping for the new-look Cyclones to bully the Bears! Go State!

If Ohio keeps this team from a bowl game it will be the worst failure of the CMC tenure. That was a game that the coaches should have been able to find a way to grind out a win.

Agree. It was and still is a bad loss. Only Cyclone fans would try to justify it. Doesn’t matter who was sick. Doesn’t matter how “young” we are. Gotta win that game. That one was on the staff.

Lol. Win, survive and advance. Or is it lose, make excuses, go home? A day like that is when a coaching staff making a collective $5-6M dollars needs to be able to find a way. They didn't and it may be the difference in this season being viewed as good or bad.

2 more wins and its swept away. If not, is a glaring miss.

Lol. These posts are just like saying, “The Evansville basketball team should have won that game! That plane crash was just an excuse!”

I imagine those Evansville players would have loved to only have a virus. Why you posted something so idiotic like this as an analogy makes me think you need to go get a refund from where you got your degree.
