We probably would have won 8 of 8 if it hadn't been for this stupid threadAfter I started this thread we've won 7 of 8 games so you guys are welcome
Ok, I give you alot of credit then for not melting down and seeing the big picture. You were right, we made the tourney easily and took care of business in the 2nd half.
On flip side, nobody can really say for sure on Jan 31st that they knew this would happen. I mean, what if we wouldnt have beaten Kansas? Or we still had Bowie and Holden trying to stop Big 12 frontcourts?
Just because things turned out ok doesnt by any means things were ok on Jan 31st. We were most certainly a bubble team/NIT at that point in time. We had just gotten pretty much blown out in the 2nd half against both Vanderbilt and West Virginia, and our offense looked awful for much of the first half of the season.
And just for the record, Im very pleased with the way things have turned out, I dont think its fair to go back and criticize people for having serious doubts about our post-season hopes on Jan 31st though.
having doubts is one thing. Declaring Hilton Magic dead is quite another. Don't try to diminish the ridiculousness of the OP. What he was doing was a far cry from what you're talking about.
That guy is a big ISU fan, probably the biggest, believe me.
I didnt think it was dead by any means and dont agree with the OP. I will admit after we lost our 3rd home game in Hilton this year that I thought games that have been counted on as automatic wins in the past suddenly felt alot more stressful this season.
During the Hoiberg era I think everyone was pretty confident we would only lose 1 home game per year, I havent felt like that anymore where each home game is pretty much automatic. Doesnt mean Hilton is dead by any means, look at the last 2 games as an example. I think this fanbase is now fully invested in Coach Prohm.
What conference do you think we play in?

I just hope everyone remembers this thread next season if/when the Cyclones start out slowly as they try to find their post-Core Four identity.
But, I bet we won't.
When Hoiberg was the coach here, how many top 15 teams were we playing at home, let alone top 5? I mean, we've hosted Cinci, KU, BU and WVU. Cinci should have been a win but I don't think losing to any of the other 3 should be embarrassing and we went 1-2 against them. That certainly doesn't make you an awful team. Pair that with the fact every team in this conference is in the top 75 and it's damn tough to get through that with less than 2-3 losses. One or two teams being really bad doesn't seem like a big deal but it is, especially on the road (I realize that's irrelevant to this thread). Worst case, this team will tie the Hoiberg era's best record against a conference that has no real bottom. That's a big ******* deal.
Bottom line is that when you play 8 teams in the KenPom top 40, it's hard to get through that unscathed if you're not an elite team. Don't get me wrong, I think this team can beat anyone, but through a whole season, there are too many holes to be elite.
This isn't going to happen because we play on Friday. If we lose on Saturday, I would be very worried about this team.
There are Prohm haters out there and will post these types of things no matter what happens. Where were these threads last year when Fred took probably the most talented team we've had in a long time to a 6th place finish in the league?
I think the job that Prohm has done this year (especially since January) is the best coaching job we've seen here since Eustachy. Is he perfect? Hell no, there are plenty of things he can improve upon.
Wrong.
After the Jan 31st game we had an NIT resume, we hadnt beaten Kansas yet, our best win at the time was Tech. It easy to go back now and say this but revisionist history isnt the best way to look at things.
I was worried at that point as well, don't get me wrong. But I had faith that Prohm was a good enough coach that he could make adjustments and turn things around. That, coupled with Solomon and the Seniors stepping up big time, has led to a pretty successful season with hopefully more to come.
My main worry at the time was that we might not turn it around because we just didn't have the horses inside. Solomon and a good rotation of Bowie and Holden have proved to be enough.
To me, that doesn't mean that Prohm was a bad coach though. While the cupboard wasn't bare when he got here, there wasn't any young talent on the roster. Many people, including myself, knew that Prohm would have to earn his paycheck this year and next year. Holden and Bowie didn't work out as planned unfortunately, but I think the recruiting has been better than expected so far.
Next year we are likely to have some struggles as well dealing with losing so many productive Seniors. If Prohm is the coach that I think he is, he will make adjustments and get as much as he can out of his team.
Elite teams either run the table or lose 1 conference home per year and go 6-3 on the road. I think we were close to being in that elite level under Hoiberg. Our problem was we werent a very good road team.
And we hadn't played a majority of the season so the resume was anything but complete.
