Hilton magic is dead

Can we stop already with the "let Prohm get his guys in here" excuse? So that's the answer? Let him coach an inexperienced team with less talent and THEN he will lead us to the promise land? Give me a break. Huggins coached circles around Prohm tonight. That makes three 2nd halfs in a row that he's been out-coached. K-State, Vandy, and tonight. Not to mention his questionable rotation. It seems like every night he goes out there to coach it is completely off the cuff and it's getting really tough to watch.

I'd say Lindell is going to be the most talented player we've had since Royce. Niang had a special skill set that was great but his lack of explosiveness keeps him out of the top top talent category.

I REALLY hope your right. I'll miss Monte but Donovan has looked pretty good so I'm not super worried about our guards for next year.

It amazes me how some have decided that this is all on Prohm. If you watched the game, you know that Naz had a horrible game, Deonte was as much "bad Deonte" as "good Deonte", and Monte looked overmatched. Check out the shooting and t/o stats for these folks - and Naz had lots of open looks that he didn't hit and crazy t/o's while he drove. Regardless of who's coach, we're not going to win games when these three play like that.

I'd like to see Prohm give Naz fewer minutes when he's so off like he has been the last couple games. But, I can understand why he feels he needs to roll with these guys, as they're his Sr. leaders. If they can't become more consistent, the wild ride will continue.

I'm not suggesting Prohm is perfect, but the memorializing of Freddie as the best coach ever is crazy. Freddie was THE right coach at the time and did wonderful things for the program. He followed his dream, so good for him, but he left a tough spot for Prohm with his "missed elephants" recruiting. Let's see how Prohm looks in a couple years.

I arrived at the conclusion pretty early into the season that Naz just isn't very good. He played his best ball when he was able to stand in the corner and play off of Niang. He just isn't comfortable in his current role and his minutes need to be reduced.

Also, the whole "Good Burton/Bad Burton" is a complete myth! Bad shots sometimes fall and all that does is mask his piss poor decision making. He has absolutely KILLED potential runs by firing up an ill advised shot or an out of control drive. If I see him pass up another open 3 to step inside the line for a long two I'm going to lose it!

My biggest observation over the last few weeks is that we pass the ball very poorly and I'm not talking about ball movement. Other than Monte, we do a really bad job passing the ball so that our shooters can get a clean shot off in rhythm. Instead the shooter has to make an extra step or reach for a pass because it wasn't on the money. The little things matter.

I think Prohm needs a scoring point to do what he wants to do. He went out and got a good one. Love Monte but he's not a scorer. He scores sometimes, but he's not a scorer if that makes sense.

I get what you are saying. He would prefer to distribute vs. score in volume. His offensive skill set has come a long ways but he needs another go to guy to be effective and we don't have that.

....cause the fans cheered because Fred was coach? If anything fans complained that Fred didn't have the Johnny court side inspirational magic.

A couple times Prohm turned to the crowd and raised his arms to ask the crowd to get involved, and there was minor reaction. Is that his fault that a lot of fans are more into their phone than the game?

The last time I paid big money to come to an ISU game and have good court side tickets for the KU game, the people "my age" behind me kept saying, "Sit down." You wouldn't have heard that in Johnny's era.

The big difference from this year to last year is Niang inspired his team, and the crowd, where this year, there is no "leader" who take over a game and be that on court inspiration.

In the 1st half it was the bench that got us back into the game. Naz was a hero back in the day, but he makes a lot of bone-headed mistakes, and is the clutch shooter he once was.

If the style of play has anything to do with the coach, then yes, his fault.

It's not the phones. It's the play on the court. We just are not a good team this year, and we make it clear in the 2nd half that nothing exciting will happen. There aren't many opportunities for the crowd to make an impact, lazy phone excuse or not.

You don't think last year's team was of Final Four caliber? o_O Maybe you spent all your time watching "other teams" and not ours.

No, I don't, and Virginia proved that. They themselves imploded the next round but player to player they were better at pretty much every position with exception to Niang, but they basically just let him do his thing while making everyone else beat them, which they couldn't. The game turned into a highlight reel for VA, and they don't play flashy.

The '13-14 team was the last FF capable team but that was also because every other Sweet 16 team was fairly even. '14-15 was Sweet 16ish but that would require playing well two games in a row, which they rarely did.*

*PLEASE don't revert to the 'roll' they were on in the Big 12 tourney. It was double digit come backs and some much needed luck.

Can't remember when it exactly was, but ISU had some things going at one point in the 2nd half, got out in psuedo-transition, and Thomas was open on the right wing or at least close...one of those feeds that with a make could have blown the crowd up a bit and shifted momentum. Instead, Monte held up, and I think it turned into more dribbling around and letting WV continue their mauling.

We had as much talent last year as maybe any ISU team ever with maybe the exception of the Tinsley years. Losing in the first round in Freds last year sucked but at least they had a good year. They were 25-9, second in the conference, and won the conference tournament. Take a lot of the same players with a new coach and go 23-12, tie for 5th in the league lose in the quarter finals of the big 12 tournament. Again, the sweet 16 was nice but in my mind they needed to get at least that far to call the year a success (which they did I guess).
JFC. Fred had better teams get bounced in the first weekend. It's no surprise some of you are continually disappointed, you are vastly overvaluing what Fred left Prohm.

Fred arguably saw this downturn coming and got out rather than face the challenge similar to his first year.

Lmao, so Fred left because he knew his future teams at Iowa State would suck and would never achieve the Sweet 16 greatness of the 14-15 team?

Huh? "Naz just isn't very good?" He is extremely talented. He missed too many shots tonight. That is all.

He's been missing too many shots all season! The fan favorite that holds the nickname Threesus is passing up open looks because he has zero confidence in his shot! If he can't knock down the 3 he really handcuffs our offense. He's not a good ball handler and when he drives the lane he is out of control. Yeah, he's finishing quite a few of those drives but he also turns the ball over a lot. Naz is a role player and it pains me to even type that because I've been a huge fan of him.

So, he has missed a few shots and you conclude that he "isn't very good" anymore. Of course, he is a role player. And a pretty good one. He just missed a few shots and you bail on him. Makes me wonder if you really ever were "a huge fan of him."

Then why do you keep posting about him? You keep contradicting yourself by saying hes a role player, which I think everyone agrees on, but then you bash him for being a role player and not being all Big 12 this year.

He's doing what hes been doing the last 5 years here, I dont know why you are expecting anything more of him.
