I don't see how any one baseball player can be any kind of example of "hard work beats talent".

Eckstein possessed exactly one elite skill: quick, soft hands. He had a very weak arm at shortstop, but he's had a great career because he compensated for that. Damn near nobody gets the ball out of their hands faster than Eckstein. He's one of the least-talented good players in the last 20 years.

You do realize that the saying doesn't mean the "hard work" crowd has ZERO talent, correct? The more talented player/team can be beaten if their less-talented opponent out works them.

Ok, overrated is probably a more accurate term. They had a nice 6 game winning streak earlier on, however the average margin of victory was about 5-6 against crappy teams. I guess I'm saying they get the benefit of the doubt in terms of ranking because the media loves them...or maybe it's just CBS. Nonetheless, I would not be shocked to see them lose to Iowa tomorrow. I really hope ISU gets placed in their region in the NCAA tournament.

In baseball especially, it refers more to the offseason. Guys who aren't blessed with extraordinary athletic ability/talent can will themselves to become better players than guys who have more natural ability. Like David Eckstein.

But making the hustle plays (diving for ground/fly balls, running out every hit regardless of whether or not it looks like the defensive play will get made, etc.) can also be the difference in helping a less talented team beat a more talented team that doesn't make those plays.

Same goes for basketball. Illinois certainly appears to have lost its will to fight. So while they're more talented than Iowa, the Hawks may very well beat them.

That's not what he said. That team had tons of great talent, but it wasn't a great team. If you're really going to argue that last year's team wasn't loaded with talent, then you may need to have your anti-Black and Gold glasses surgically removed. You could say the same thing for lots of teams/programs; Texas was like that for many years. North Carolina has been like that lately. Clemson too. Any team that's got tons of talent and underachieves.

2. Players giving up (Clayborn's "will to win" comment. And if you watched the Minnesota game last year, you know that's no joke. Iowa looked an awful lot like Illinois' basketball team does now, save for DJK.).
