The problem with Gessell and free throws is you rely on your point guard to be handling the ball in those tight games so he is the one who is going to get fouled down the stretch.

Yep, like a late season 'good loss' will get Iowa in a better position for the post season.
I agree. But not sure anybody else on the team is any better when it counts. Maybe Jok and that is it. Woodbury, Uthoff and Gesell will combine to go 12-14 from the line during the course of the game and then finish 1-7 down the stretch.
Marble missed late in that game too, Iowa has had some really good players the last 3 or 4 years who disappear at the end of games. Marble, White, Uthoff, gessel....all were nowhere to be found late in games. Heck this season it seems like every game Iowa wins, they win easy but they lose any game that is competitive in the final minutes.
They did manage to pull out that four point win at home against Baby Pitino's mighty crew.
Gesell wants the ball late in the game when the pressure is on. He screws the pooch too much, but at least he's got heart. I respect him for that.

Gesell is not good. Would not start for any other team in Big 10 or 12. 4 yr starter who can't shoot, can't finish, can't create and can't make free throws is in no way good.
That center for Michigan might be clumsier than Woodbury. Lucky for them that they're nailing 3s with how well Iowa is shooting.
