I cannot fathom why anybody would want to compare our program to anybody else's right now.

To the old guy that said younger fans don't know what theyre talking about. My father was a football coach for 20 years. Ive been around it and seen multiple college programs from the inside. Yes, we have been one of the worst P5 teams in the country last few years. Many things contribute to it. If you would like to discuss further please let me know. Id especially love to talk fundamentals on this issue. Thats a coaching problem period. Doesnt matter if we have the horses in the first place.

Before you site close loses, those were games we should have won. We lost them. We didnt get beat, we lost them. Theres a big difference there.

This thread is disappointing - I thought Cyclone fans were more level-headed than this (I'm not speaking to all, clearly, but to some).

I'm a native Minnesotan, and as a Gopher fan that means I root against Wisconsin and Iowa more than any other teams and wish no success upon them. But I've lived here in Des Moines for 20 years and I've become a Cyclone fan as well. I went to all the home games last year and I don't know how anyone can say the talent level on the field wasn't absolutely horrific. There simply weren't a lot of D1-caliber athletes out there. Good lord, they trotted out some awful players.

This ISU team is in no way better than the Hawkeyes. Iowa's season was a disappointment. Iowa State's was a disaster. I appreciate that the Cyclones beat Iowa head-to-head, but in determining which team is better that should only be used as a deciding factor if the rest of the season was similar. Upsets happen. Virginia Tech was not better than Ohio State. In basketball, Rutgers was not better than Wisconsin.

Cyclone fans continue to post that Iowa's Big 10 schedule included a bunch of Kansases. Well, Iowa beat Illinois and Northwestern and Purdue, three teams that absolutely would have been favored against Kansas, and an Indiana team with Tevin Coleman that might have been favored against Kansas. Iowa State lost to Kansas.

It was a bad season last year, but I'll be at Jack Trice this fall hoping for the best (and hoping to read and hear a little more common sense out of some delusional Cyclone fans).

Actually, NOBODY on this board considers the Iowa game as the "measure of success". Iowa fans think that about ISU fans, which indicates you are an Iowa fan. ISU fans consider it an important event to beat an in-state rival and non-conference P5 team...but measure our success by getting to bowl games...at a minimum. Getting into a bowl correlates with doing better in our conference, so that is where the emphasis is for virtually every single Cyclone fan.

That said, with a win this year, you could honestly say we have come to dominate the Cy-Hawk series in the Kirk Ferentz era. And that IS fun.

Right now it may be more important for ISU to beat UNI than UI.

You also can send a bucket of bear grease to help stormin get his head out.

This was meant fir the other poster.

Let me finish your who beat whom comments.

and isu beat iowa at iowa.

And I actually watched all the teams you mentioned play last year and it was some of the worst football I have ever seen in a conference by a group of teams. I would have take Kansas straight up over those teams any day.

ISU had two better wins than any of those teams. Indiana had missouri.

get real. When isu beats Iowa again and I am very confident about that happening... will you be back to eat your words like the hawk trolls here?

At the end of the day, ISU finished 2-10 despite playing in a conference with a much more advantageous recruiting footprint. ISU should be better since it is fortunate enough to dip into Texas twice a year to find southern recruits. Until ISU fully takes advantage of this opportunity, comparing ourselves to other programs is foolish.

There is nothing foolish about it. Actually the definition of foolish is placing more emphasis on wins over other teams than the actual game that was played that isu clearly won.

Or the head to head vs big twelve teams.

Facts. The big ten didn't win those battles.

Let me salute you Sir. You must really love college football. No apparent connection to ISU, but willing to watch every home game from last year. In person!

With regard to talent level, I never criticize players. It's probably because I now have Sons in 18-22 demographic. What you say about talent could very well be true. However, what I saw through the TV screen from afar was a very poor coaching job that started at the top. Someone like Jerry Kill could have gotten 4, maybe 5 wins out of that roster with that schedule.

In any event, thanks for helping JTS attendance figures and I hope you get to enjoy better football this year. I'll also be rooting for the Gophers since I am an admirer of the aforementioned Mr. Kill.

That's a different argument. I'll defend the Big 12 over the Big 10 in terms of overall strength any day.

Iowa over Iowa State though.. yikes. If we must compare tragedies, Iowa still reached a bowl game while ISU was four games short of one.

And the local junior high team went undefeated. Wow. We don't want to compare iowa to them. They are undefeated!

Then you miss the gigantic fact that iowa played those teams!

Terrible, terrible teams. And you want me to value those wins?

Are you serious? The mac was better than the bottom half of the big ten.

So was toledo better than iowa? They went to a bowl.

I told you I'd agree with you on the Big Ten strength argument. ISU sucked last year though.

Thank you! I've been to several different college football venues, mostly in the Big 10, and I can absolutely say that the tailgating / fan experience is the best at Jack Trice. We have so much fun, although last year it took an extra serving or two of Fireball to make it through.
