The conference comparison issue comes up when idiots try to compare Iowa's record with ISU's and use that as a measuring stick for how good each team is. When this is brought up, its relevant to show just how weak Iowa's schedule is and just how awful the Big Ten has been as a conference...literally the weakest, or perhaps 2nd weakest, of the P5 leagues (they alternate with the ACC). So the "constant need" is really just an answer to the numerous Hawkeye fans here making a false comparison of the programs.
Yes, our focus is on being more competitive in the Big 12, but we are still free to point out the obvious when confronted with Hawkeye delusions...that Iowa's better season records are generally a function of playing the equivalent of Kansas 7 times during each season. Further, our beating their butt on their home field and in Ames during the KF era...more often than not...is a clear demonstration of the fact that our team's abilities are greater than theirs. An argument that we make because Iowa and ISU are rivals...making this game important to both teams, though less so than either team's conference performance.
So CPR's job is to improve our play in conference AND to ensure we beat the weaker team's we play outside of the league...such as Iowa. He multi-tasks...of necessity, as do all coaches. His priority is obviously the Big 12, and that's where he has/is/will target his efforts, though it is a far more difficult task than beating up on weak Big Ten teams...which is why our success in league has been much harder to come by.
