Has Haluska Lost His Spot?

Lucca will be the next guard on this team to get a lot of mins every game and play well, and that wont be until next year.

Haluska can't shoot or play defense.

Lee can Semi shoot and play defense. Advantage Lee. By the way what are these guys doing that can't shoot. What do they do growing up playing in the back yard?

I don't know if stats would back me up but my sense is that, overall, shooting has generally deteriorated over the last 20 years or so. This is why someone that can really shoot stands out so much more today.

I believe this has happened for several reasons:

-small kids when they are learning to shoot immediately run to practice shooting the 3 and because they are really too weak to shoot the shot they develop poor shooting mechanics that are difficult to change in later life.

-the slash to the basket with the power dunk or the alley oop pass with a flush at the end are more apt to make the highlights on SportsCenter than consistently knocking down the 10-15 footer.

-the players are much stronger and the officials have let the game become far to physical which yields a lot of contact on the perimeter that just did not used to exist (without a foul being called).

I think Lee is taking away Boozer's minutes more than Haluska's. I haven't been impressed with Haluska's shot at all. Kid hustles and plays pretty decent defense but until he can start hitting his shots he's a liability on the offensive end. I like Lee's game and I really like it when someone comes out of no where and earns time through hard work. Haven't seen enough of him yet to say he's any better on offense then Haluska but he's definately a good defender.

I am concerned that Charles is not seeing much action, but defense is not his strong point.

If Boozer, Lee, or Haluska ever get their 3 point shot good, that one will get the mins. Until then they will be fighting for a spot and we will see them all play some based on their practice preformance.

Agreed, to a point. Haluska knocks down shots all day long in practice. Whoever can knock them down in games is who will get to play.

Boozer could fill that roll, but I think he is a guy who is still having trouble grasping the 'system' on both ends of the court.

I think Boozer is starting to get a hang of it though. He showed alot of leadership in the ND game, although he was leading the walk ons. He was directing them on where to go and even tried to give Smith a clue about posting up. It looked like the coaching staff was pretty impressed with this aspect of his game too...

Very much so. He looks lost out there and making bad choices on when to shot

A guard that can come off the bench and hit shots will help this team a bunch, and maybe stop those streaches where this team doesnt score. Stupid and simple as that sounds.

He seems to be a pretty good on the ball defender as well.

Something else about the kid is his frame. He could easily carry 210 lbs on his frame and not lose a step (see big brother). If he did add that size he could be a Kantrel (sp?) Horton type player for us, where he can defend small forwards as well as guards.

I think being out there and having guys look to him helped his development. Gametime experence is what he needs, but those mins are hard to come by. The more he played the more unlost he looked. His shot still needs some work though.

I think Coach Mac will use both as needed....

On another note Sean is 0-25 on threes all but one have hit the rim, he has 1 air ball....

I think It would be very difficult for any player of Sean's caliber or on ISU to take 24 shots and hit the rim every time and not at least make one.....?

He is truly in a funk, hopefully he breaks out....

Someone puts in to words what I couldn't. Thank you very much.

I hope Lee gets the nod, just because he could turn out to be a solid guy down the road. I mean he is only a freshman and he's got the physical tools. Regardless, once Eik, Buckley, and Lucca are all here and eligible next year this will probably be a moot argument.

I wished Boozer was playing better than he is by now because he probably has the most Big 12 ready body out of our guards beside Wes who is probably more of a 3 than a 2. I do wonder if someone like Eikmier gets redshirted next year. I think Boozer would have this year if not for our injury problems.

Haluska works hard at defense, but he is just not quick/athletic enough. He is always behind whoever he is guarding. And that causes him to pick up a lot of fouls (At one point in the year he was leading the team in fouls). He is a good defender, but not great. And Mac said that at the beginning of the year when no one but Rahshon and Haluska were playing defense. The rest of the team was HORRIBLE! But since then Jiri, Craig, and even Wes have stepped their defense up.

Wes makes allot of plays with his length. He gets allot of weak-side blocks and gets his hands in the passing lanes. As he has gotten healthy, he seems to be quicker at these types of things. He struggles on the ball still, but the effort is there.

Does anyone else cringe when they see the name Haluska? Or it is just me.

Old habits die hard.

No because he's not Adam. I know some people might not like him because of his brother which is a stupid thing. I'm not an Adam Haluska fan after how he left ISU the way he did but Sean picked ISU and in fact he did it as a walk-on. I know he has a scholarship now because of people that left but I can't hold what his brother did against him. He's a Cyclone, he chose to be one so I'll cheer for him just I do everyone else on the team.

I'm guessing Haluska has been getting the nod because he will walk straight into a wall if McDermott told him too. Boozer and Lee have made some maverick plays; unnecessary shots on one hand, a couple of steals on the other. Haluska has the infinitely coachable mindset that McDermott has made his career finding. That's my guess.

Personally, I'm just glad we have too many guards rather than too few.
