Has Haith or Self really done better than Fred?

Not everyone expected KU to be good:

It really doesn't matter what he lost. What does matters is what he had to work with this year. Poor Bill only had four four star players and one five star player waiting to step in. I feel real sorry for him. :jimlad:

Allow me to quote some of your fellow posters on this board regarding expectations of KU this season, from this thread and http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/off-topic/121069-mbb-talent-compared-other-big-12-teams.html.

"They lose 80% of their scoring, 75% of their rebounding, 65% of their assists. Six of their top eight players are gone. Not counting Taylor, their returning players averaged 5 minutes/game last year.

With those starters, and with three first year players off the bench, they will struggle big time. Withey sucks. He runs like he's on stilts. Releford a question mark. Johnson is a head case. Robinson is talented but unproven as the centerpiece.

I like our chances against them as much next year as any year I can remember."

"If you're trotting out T-Rob, Withey, Taylor, E.Johnson, and Releford as your starting line-up next season, you aren't winning the conference and it may be a challenge getting to the NCAAs with that crew."

"Top 50 recruit coming back for his senior year in college = not really that good"

"Jeff Withey, Elijah Johnson, Travis Releford, etc. were all nailed to the bench when KU got beat by VCU and did little the rest of the season. Probably a good reason for that, they can't play. And you are expecting those guys to be starters on a conference title contender next season? I doubt it. And don't bother with your usual "they were highly rated in HS" crap. Their HS rankings don't mean diddly now."

"I would not be at all surprised to see KU end up around 4 or 5 in the conference, with ISU being one of the teams above them. Time will tell..."

"Regarding order of finish, I'll be surprised if KU gets in the top three"

"Not sure how you conclude that the Morriss twins' production will be replaced by Robinson (with limited offensive skills compared to the twins), Withey (rotting on the bench for two seasons and with good reason), and unproven frosh PFs. Only a KU homer would conclude that.

If Releford and Teahan (LOL that you mention him) couldn't beat out guys like Morningstar and Reed last season, then I wouldn't expect those two to be impact players this season. I would not expect much from Tharpe next season and McLemorre is no slam dunk to be star player right off the bat."

" The KU homers are suggesting that guys like Withey, Releford and E.Johnson are talented enough to be starters on a conference champ contender next season. Based on their quality of play and lack of PT at KU so far, there is little to no evidence that they are capable of that. If they were good enough, Self would have found PT for them when games were still in question"

Wow, KU, you are cool.

I guess I don't understand why you feel the need to come here and defend your favorite team. Do you go to Baylor's sites, or UT sites, etc to tell them how great kansas is at basketball too?

I am one of the people that has always liked Self, I think he is a hell of a coach. This is probably one of the best coaching jobs he has had to do since Tulsa. But that doesn't mean that Fred hasn't done a better job, because he has had to mix and match new parts that weren't recruited together, like all of the ku players.

Haith will win the award for going all Bruce Weber on the conference.

Now, please continue defending your favorite team, it is sadly funny.

I read the thread title as asking for Self's or Haith's COY credentials, and I provided some information. I never said anything bad about Hoiberg. He's done a great job as well.

You have to admit, that video and some of those quotes were a little less than optimistic about KU's chances in the the conference. Anyone saying they were sure KU would win the conference this year is practicing at least a little revisionist history. Hell, prior to the season, I thought Baylor would win it, as you can see in one of those links.

Hit ignore if you don't want to read my posts. It's not hard.

Actually, as I said I think Self is a great coach. They are never going to be far off the lead in this league as long as he is there. His talent level, while not what it was a year ago, is STILL at the very top of the league.

I never took part in the idea that ku wouldn't win the league, because they are used to winning the league, and you have to be 20 points better than them to even think about winning in Phog, and 10 points better than them to win at home, due to the fascinating officiating that seems to happen in their games. It will always be that way, and so you have to get used to it. But, I was happy seeing mizzu get SCREWED THE **** OVER Saturday.

I really think that is one of the reasons that he "only" has one national championship. They are soooooo protected in this league, that they have real problems playing when there isn't an agenda.

I will say, that if the NCAA were a 2 out of 3 series, they would have won at least two of the last three years. They got caught by a veteran UNI team that was tougher than they were, and VCU, well you know....

Who has done more with less?? IMO CFH wins that one easily.

AGREE. Poor Kansas, such a down year. They weren't projected to finish 1st by everyone this year, only the Big 12 coaches had it right... They don't have much talent, but they do have the probable Player of the Year, Robinson. They have only won 8 conference titles in a row. Poor Kansas.

It's not an award for the most improved coach of the year. If it were, the only way to win it would be to do badly one year, and then improve a lot next year. It is not a Mr. Hustle award.

It's simply an award for coach of the year. And wins count. Championships matter. If we started giving it to guys who took their team from number 8 to number 4, guys like Self would never get it.

Not saying that Self or Haith should definitely get it over FH. But if they did, it would not be be the greatest injustice ever.

I haven't looked, but I'm pretty sure I picked A&M and Baylor to be 1 and 2, either order. But I also think I picked KU 3rd, Missouri 4th.

I knew KU would still be very good, i just didnt think they would have the depth to get it done. But, 3rd is still pretty high.

No doubt all three coaches have done a great job - I won't be ****** whoever they chose.

Are you saying the entire ISU fanbase has to be on the same page, and have the same perspective on KU??

We better start scheduling conference calls to get our **** together.

If I said Billy Gillespie would you laugh?
Well Fred was in that same last place situation last year.
Hoiberg is this year's XII Coach of the Year

Except Fred had our team close in many, many games. They could have easily won four more games with just a few bounces the right way here and there. TT is getting their *** handed to them nightly.

I think all three coaches have an argument. If I were asked to vote, I would probably pick Haith

Self might get it because his team will probably win the B12, Haith might get it because he's new to the B12 and took on a team that already had a ton of talent. Both had alot of talent to start the year. Think comparing last season to this one CFH deserves the B12 COY by a landslide

All 3 coaches are deserving, but I think post-season needs to be factored in with this voting. There's still a lot of ball to be played, so let's see if Steady Freddy and the boys can earn some awards down the stretch.

Haith stepped into the easiest situation possible. Most posters on this board could coach that team. He will end up getting fired at Mizzou someday, mark my words.

Consider that Self lost 2 NBA lottery picks, another NBA draft pick, AND two other starters from last season. Understand that KU's bench may be one of the worst of any BCS-league team. And notice that they are perhaps the third-best team in the country as of today.

I might argue that this has been Self's best coaching job at KU yet.
Amazing job by Self -- I wish it was Freddy but that requires at least 3/4 more wins IMHO --- I expect Freddy to come in 3rd in the voting

If ISU can win one of the next two games then I think Fred has a very good chance to win it, but it will be hard to beat Haith and Self. I think Haith will win it because no one thought they were going to be a top ten team in the country and they lost Bowers before the season started.

After losing to the 'Clones this week will they finish the season in the top ten?

Don't you all feel it's sort of an embarrassment that KU has won for the 8th time in a row?

The B12 is starting to look like C-USA; somebody needs to step up and beat the crap outta KU.
