Has anyone purchased a new vehicle lately, the prices are off the wall.

So you the know the CEO of every company you purchase stuff from? He's weird, but weird seems to be the creative people and get things accomplished. I didn't care for Jack Welch's style but I didn't say I was boycotting GE.

I would have agreed with you about Elon being just a weird quirky creative guy at one time. The peak of Elon was when he hosted SNL. He spoke about how he had Asperger's in his monologue and just seemed like a weird yet likeable guy. It wasn't long that he really did go off the rails and he made things very political. I'm sure I'm not the only liberal leaning environmentally conscience person that was so turned off that I chose to never support Tesla's. We have since bought 2 used PHEV and absolutely love them. My wife got a Volva XC60 with literally all the bells and whistles and a pretty good cost for similar used items and I got a Honda Clarity with some higher miles, but it was perfect for what I needed. The Clarity is an awesome PHEV and it's too bad Honda stopped making them. Really it is like the Prius Prime but got more electric range for used model years I was looking at and much more space in the backseat and trunk for our little family outings. I think the new Prius Prime's will get better range, but they just don't have a lot of room for more then 2 people.

Did Elon change or you just learned more?

EDIT: I don’t care about a persons politics if I feel they are making a positive for people/society/ environment. If I wanted to go that route I’d have to eliminate probably 1/2 of all my choices. Seeing that many things are from oversees, that would kill an extreme amount. I have an iPhone even though I know how they are made. I would see myself as two faced to own one and complain about Tesla.

I don’t want to cave it so I will stop.

My wife and I both had cars 10+ years old with 160K+ more miles, Mine was over 200K. We had been talking about what our next car should be and considered electric. Even suggesting to our kids maybe I'll get a Tesla as you started seeing them around a lot more. Once Elon started spewing off crazy political takes my mind went from maybe I'll consider or even want a Tesla as our next car to I will never buy a Tesla. It was that much of a mind change just by his words and actions.

When we were parked at the hotel this weekend, I noticed an Audi Q5 was plugged in. I loved that it had zero badging that is was a hybrid and the only way I could tell was that it had a fuel door on one side and a charger door on the other. I think it's obnoxious when companies like Toyota use dumb colors and tons of badging for their hybrids.
BTW-I'm not pimping the Q5, I don't know if it's any good.
I recently bought a '23 CX-5 and I noticed there's two traced cutouts inside the fuel door, one for the regular gas pump and one for what I'm assuming is a hybrid power connector of some sort. I liked the concept of having both inputs in the same door. I assumed that meant it was done in a more stealthy way (and that the hybrid vehicle's color/badging would also be similarly subtle).

My biggest issue with Teslas is now that you see them around more, they all look the same. You’ll see a row of chargers and there are all identical cars with 3 color options. Have some originality.

Yeah, the real question for me is would a plug in be better considering my commute, or just a fuel efficient hybrid? The plug in would be great for around town commute
That's a tough one. I would take a wild guess that if the commute is fairly long/longer than a PHEV battery would normally cover, it may be slightly better in the long run to have a traditional hybrid that would help out more on the longer drives? If it's all just short trips and largely city driving, I'd bet the PHEV would take care of it and feel like it's basically cost-free to operate.

Doesn’t ford only make the focus for cars? Do you want like SUVs or different models of cars?

You have a valid point there. While we were charging it was a constant "Oh look, another white model Y". They make Accords seem like some rare exotic :)

Plug-ins are awesome. Very, very few people wouldn't benefit from having one. We should've been making these things 10+ years ago.
Really wanted a Plug-in hybrid Crosstrek when I bought my gas version, but good luck getting one.

I’m not sure how it is now, but a year ago it was damn near impossible to get one. Just anecdotal, but I think there is a ton of buy in on Plug-in hybrids. They just make tons of sense for most of us. Hopefully availability is better in a couple years when we swap out our other vehicle.

I don't want to cave this but I will second that. Our family will not support an open and blatant fascist. /political related talk

There's also the fact that industry estimates have Tesla's current fleet estimated to have more recalls than all other cars. Their failure to deliver on promised features/upgrades. Their clear QC issues. And there are just as capable and forward looking companies elsewhere.

Summary

  • Tesla is the most-recalled brand, with the Y, 3, X, and S occupying 4 of the top 5 slots
  • Mercedes-Benz leads the least-recalled list, followed closely by Toyota and Lexus
  • 33 Models are projected to experience 1 or fewer recalls over their lifespan
  • 25 Models are projected to experience at least 10 recalls over their lifespan
  • The Tesla Model Y is projected to have 62 recalls over its lifespan
The overall average for lifetime projected recalls across all makes and models is 4.0. The least-recalled cars average one projected recall or less; conversely, the most recalled car, Tesla’s Model Y, is projected to have more than 62 recalls.

This is a tad bit out of context.

* A large portion of tesla code runs on all models. So if there is one recall, it impacts all Tesla models. This can be both good/bad.
* Most of these are OTA updates that are performed as part of the monthly update, which happens automatically without the owner having to do anything.

Cars With the Most Safety Recalls, Excluding OTA (Software Update) Recalls

  1. Porsche Panamera.
  2. Lincoln Aviator.
  3. Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
  4. Volkswagen Atlas.
  5. Ram 1500 Classic.
  6. Ram 1500.
  7. Tesla Model Y.
  8. Ford F-150.
  9. Porsche Macan.
  10. Porsche Cayenne.

I'm not saying that it's not a concern but you also have to consider that it's a lot of times about the software.

Depending on the price difference between the plug in and the hybrid, if it was under a couple grand more I would purchase the plug in.

It's going to take 10 to 20 years to phase out gas vehicles, the infrastructure is going to take a decade or longer to get enough charging stations in place and increase battery life for everyone to go down that path.
But if you have two vehicles, the plug in work vehicle and the hybrid/gas vehicle for longer trips would be perfect.

Very valid point. My only pushback is that software controls so much of the vehicle these days that big issues there can be big issues on the road, not just with the infotainment experience. We had a CR-V several years ago that wouldn't accelerate in certain scenarios when getting on to the highway. Turned out to be a software bug but nearly cost us several accidents.

I’ll believe it when I see it.
I am sure people were saying the same thing a hundred years ago when the main way of transportation was the horse.

There are going to be some applications that are going to struggle with the changeover if they do at all, like farm equipment, semi for long distance hailing and others. But the average day to day driving, those will be for the most part electric and it's going to happen soon than many want to believe.

Totally agree, that's why it's almost criminal that a lot of new cars can't get OTA updates. It's like buying a new laptop and never getting any updates. In my Kia I have to download the updates on to a USB drive to update the software, I'm guessing 98% of the owners never update.

That also prevents getting a bad update that results in a recall. If the software works from the factory, don’t mess with it.
