Harold Nichols open

I just looked and both Utah Valley and Boise State also held their starters out of their open tournaments last weekend. That could have had an impact on our decision, I guess.

However, Utah Valley and Boise State have a whopping zero ranked wrestlers and (as far I a can tell with a quick check) one returning NCAA qualifier between them. I'm sure it was very important we were fully rested to take on such illustrious foes.
Utah Valley's HWT is the only ranked wrestler I saw on InterMat. I'd really like to see us go at least 16-4 this weekend.

I hope we do not pull Boson's shirt. I believe you only pull one if you think it is the difference between a team trophy or not. Staff and fans overreacted to JM's HNO results two years ago. I wish he would have redshirted, he didn't. Hopefully JM is healthy and will compete to the level we all hope.

I agree, you only pull a shirt if its the difference between a team trophy or not...Or if your coach is on the hot seat and needs you to wrestle. :)

Woops, missed him when I was scanning intermat. It's worth noting though that he withdrew from the Clarion Open the weekend before last with an injury. No clue if it was serious or just precautionary.

I disagree. Wrestle a freshman anytime it gives solid bump to your line-up. You never know when you're going to be stacked at that weight class a couple of years down and want the flexibility to RS a guy. Case in point, Meeks could have given us a boost in a very weak 133 lb weight class next year, but instead he may be holding some guys like Rodriquez out of the line-up an extra year. Red shirts aren't the same necessity that they used to be. These high school guys are more ready than they used to be.

I have never really followed the Souther Scuffle (OR Cliff Keen in Las Vegas), but can RS wrestle at those tournaments? Seems like putting Boston in the Scuffle could help you make your decision on whether to start him or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong but since the Cliff Keen is an invitational, doesn't that imply that the only ones wrestling are those scoring points for the "invited" teams? I think it means each team gets one guy per weight class.

I believe this is correct.

I think it depends on the tournament. Midlands is also an invitational, but they allow teams to bring unattached guys as well. Like I said, I have never followed the CK too closely so wasn't sure if the school gets to bring the starting lineup + maybe 1-5 unattached if they want to. Maybe CK is strictly attached guys like you said.

I think the Midlands is an open tourney. Corey Jantzen wrestled in it as a high schooler. Chris Bono competed for years after he graduated.

Scuffle is an open tourney, according to UT-C's website.

I guess I thougth it was invitational because Iowa only brings a certain amount of wrestlers and the year they didn't go they could only send 5 wrestlers (and one of them ended up being a grad).

I think if you are a returning Midland champion you have the right to return (an auto-invite).

Here is what I found when I googled about Midlands:
"No. 3 Iowa is 10-1 on the season, with a 3-0 record in Big Ten duals. The Hawkeyes have also made two tournament appearances, winning the Midlands Invitational on Dec. 30 and having 10 champions at the Luther Open on Nov. 16. At Midlands, Thomas Gilman (125), Derek St. John (157) and Mike Evans (174) each won weight class titles to lead the Hawkeyes. "

just for what it's worth

You have to be invited as an individual. Not sure high schoolers are invited anymore. If team isn't going as a whole, Midllands allows teams to bring so many individuals. Not sure they ever declining college teams or college individuals
