Happy Joe's overseas

The town where I work in Wisconsin just had a Happy Joe's open about 6 months ago in an old Applebees. Nobody was ever in there and they have temporarily closed because of some construction outside. They say they are coming back in the Fall, but I have my doubts.

Love the cubes, love the rabbit poop sausage, BLT, Taco Joe, kraut, any of it. Used to beat the old Pella location up.

Anyone ever try their breakfast pizza?

I love the rabbit poop sausage too

I love all the pizza places that have the crumble sized sausage or beef. Happy Joe's does it, DaVinci's in Campustown used do it back in the day.

The Tombstone Classic Sausage was pretty good until about a year ago when they changed it.

Do you remember when Tony's in the yellow box had puck like sausage and the pepperoni cups?

Yep. Love those grease cups. At least now you can buy those pepperoni cups at the store from brands like Hormel.

Was there an "Old Fashioned Garden?"

Still one in Ottumwa, Iowa.

A lot of high-school post-play gatherings for me at that place in the early 80s. Still in the same location!

Both of Happy Joe’s dine-in locations in Cedar Rapids are gone, they now just have two delivery/pickup places. No more soft-serve, no more arcade games, no more getting a plastic spider ring with your 8000 game tickets …

Wisconsin Style Old Fashioneds are actually a really good cocktail. It's too bad they are called old fashioneds, because it's not similar at all, and so people who don't know what a Wisconsin old fashioned is are always disappointed when they order one

They are a little too sweet for me.

Does anyone else even try? Lol
Don't think anyone does a better Canadian bacon/sauerkraut than HJ.

Jake's Pizza in Albert Lea Mn does a really good job with sauerkraut pizzas another cool thing about Jake's is that they have a multi level carousel style pizza oven, only one of them that I have ever seen.

George's pizza in Austin also makes good pizzas with sauerkraut on them. Both these places put enough on that you can actually taste them.

We were in Baraboo last fall and I had what might be the best single cocktail I've ever had in my life, it was at the Driftless Glen Distillery, their Blackberry Old Fashioned was seriously amazing.
  • 1 Orange Slice
  • 2 Blackberries
  • ¼ oz. Reneé Blackberry Ginger Balsamic
  • 2 Dashes of Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters
  • ½ oz. Simple Syrup
  • Add Ice
  • 2 oz. Driftless Glen 5 Year Reserve Brandy
  • Top with Sour and Sprite
  • Garnish with an Orange

I was a pizza maker at HJ in Cascade as a teen, that was my first job. The reason HJ is better is the real ingredients, especially the cheese. Also more expensive. It is still my favorite, though I love hitting GPSD when in Ames.

There are a couple HJ in Cedar Rapids, one at BF and Edgewood, and another on the SW side. I think both are take out only though.

Is the one behind Kennedy Mall in DBQ still open? That place was an absolute time portal to 1979 last time I was there, maybe 10 years ago.

Is there one still in Manchester(?) I thought I ate at one there a few yrs back.
