Happy Joe's overseas

That‘s a Godfathers. Although there are darn few of those around anymore, too.

Godfathers had the best chain pizza for a long time. Now they all mostly suck. Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Little Caesars have all gone way downhill. Dominos actually got better than it used to be but it was the Kansas football of pizza for so long that it’s still not very good.

Do you think those places have gone downhill? Or do you think those places seemed good when you were young, but you have outgrown them?

Godfathers is still legit pizza. You have to give them props, they refused to get caught up in the low budget high volume game like Pizza Hut did.

The Blairs Ferry building is now Adelitas, a pretty decent Mexican restaurant. The 16th Ave SW building has run through several failed restaurants after Godfathers closed.

Man delivering for that 16th Ave location was awful, those neighborhoods/streets are goofy and all you had was a laminated map since this was pre cell phone days.

Back in the day we had a laminated map hanging up in the Ames store. You had better make sure you know where you are going before you leave because you weren't taking the cooler it was taped to with you.

Best was the happy Joes at Southridge mall. As a kid you could watch them make the pizza. I have no idea why that was cool and fun, it just was.

Also the Canadian Bacon with Kraut was pretty good pizza.
I think they tried to put this in a lot of their stores. The Ames one had a window with a step outside of it so even the really little kids could see the make station and the ovens.

The other ones I've heard mentioned but please expand on the hungry hobo is it a local cafe?
It's been around at least since the 70's. Before Subway was a thing. They call their 12" The King. I think the 6" is just called The Regular.

They added soups maybe in the 80's and the Loaded Baked Potato. Everything from plain butter to bacon, chives, sour cream, cheese, chili etc. on top.

A woman I worked with had a little chihuahua dog. They left a HH sandwich on the chair and the dog ate it. The whole thing. They went into a panic and called the vet. FIrst thing the vet asked after they said their dog ate a whole Hungry Hobo sandwich was, "Regular or King." Somehow when she told me the story I thought that was the funniest response ever.

(The dog was fine, BTW)
