Hakeem Butler Cut

Bailey has a motor and enough athleticism to give college tackles issues, but he doesn't have the explosiveness or length to be an NFL guy. He's one of my favorites and will always be a guy I associate with the beginning of the Campbell era.
Will McDonald may absolutely be another story.

I think the most successful players to come from ISU to the NFL are on this current team. We've had some good ones over the years but Campbell already has one of the better ones in Montgomery in the league and there are a handful of guys on this year's team that could get drafted.

AJ Klein has had probably the best NFL career of any Cyclone so far. Going into his 9th season coming off probably his best statistical season of his career too. KO has had a nice career too and is right up there with him too. Lazzard may carve out a place on the list too if he keeps it up but other than those guys mentioned already Seneca, Sage, Jordan Carstens, James Reed, and Reggie Heyward are about the only former players with any kind of longevity in the league.

Butler just makes too many drops to make the league. He can make the great play, but for some reason has trouble with the average one.

Klein’s been a good pro, but there’s been far better in the league that went to ISU.

Hayward had a pretty similar career to Klein, had some nice years in the league. Ellis Hobbs definitely had his stretch too. Keith Sims was an all pro lineman for the Dolphins in the 90’s. So was Marcus Robertson at safety for the Oilers. Osemele has been one of the better lineman over the last decade as well.

Also there’s Matt Blair, who may even still have a case to this day for the HOF. I’d also argue what Montgomery has done over two years has already put him up there.

bleedinggreennation.com doesn't have him making the 53 man roster or the practice squad

One of the write ups on that site a couple weeks ago mentioned the possibility of trying to keep JaQuan around with the idea of bulking him up for making a move inside. The thought was that he had a motor and played tough, but didn't have enough athleticism to man an edge position. Interesting theory, but it might be a challenge to get him big enough to handle an inside position.

I agree. Tough to make the league as a 6'2 260 lb DE. At least not without freak athleticism. Heck of a college player, but he was always going to have a hard time making a roster.

I could see that. Put him on the practice squad for a year and see if you can get him up to the 290 range. He is a solid run defender.

I really thought Hakeem could make a roster at least as a third down option. I’ve never seen an ISU receiver throw around Oklahoma defensive backs like rag dolls. It’s a tough league and a fine line to stay there.
Someone we don’t think much of in regards to an NFL future, but I think Uwazurike could lowkey carve out a role at the next level when he goes pro.

I put this thread up while back. According to numbers crunched by Footballreference.com, Blair, Sims & Roberson are the top 3 and it's not close. AJ was just short of making the top 10 and would probably move in with another year or two. DM probably 3-4 years away.

Agreed - Blair was more of an impact player than Klein. Osemele was on track for a big career but his shoulder injuries have slowed him; he's a 2x Pro Bowler.

Keith Sims was indeed one of the best linemen in the league. I looked and he was 2nd-team All Pro and a 3-time Pro Bowler.

People forget about Karl Nelson (Giants lineman; won a Super Bowl) and Mike Stensrud (2nd round pick; 11-year career).

Not sure where else to post these things: I see that Michael Jacobson was waived a couple weeks ago by the Seahawks.

K. Osemele was never re-signed this year. He was playing well last year for the Chiefs until he got hurt. Some team with OL injuries will take a serious look at him.

Willie Harvey re-signed with Cleveland after they had an LB injury. Also signed at the same time as Willie was a LB named Montrel MEANDER -- can he stay in his assignment or does he just wander off? :)

KO also had a season as a first team All-Pro, which is a big deal, a lot tougher than making a Pro Bowl. So after Sims, Blair and Robertson, KO is probably next up so far.

Hopefully the current roster can have some breakthroughs.

As far as Hakeem, it comes back to the same things - you better be quick in and out of breaks and you better catch the ball consistently to be a WR in the league. The former is exactly why AL went undrafted and needed to find the right situation to thrive.

I still think there's a chance he could find the right situation and stick, but he's probably down to one more opportunity at most.
