I've been playing golf for 31 years, and I play quite a bit - for a stretch of 8+ years, 100+ rounds a year. I play about 75 rounds a year nowadays. I used to play alone quite a bit during the week, almost always with a foursome on the weekend. At 40 rounds/year, four par 3s per 18, and call it 3 in a group, I've seen somewhere around 15,000 attempts at a par 3. I've seen three hole-in ones in person, all three in the last four years. A hole-in-one insurance site puts the odds of a hole in one for amatuers at 12,500:1, so even though it feels like I've hardly seen any, I guess I'm well ahead of the average.
I have also seen on Freddie Couples par (hole in one after a lost ball). Friend plopped one into a ravine in Colorado, jarred the next one. We may him buy beers anyway.
In a high school golf tournament, my coach and the opposing coach happened to see me dunk one from about 100 yards. They come over and coach says "eagle! Awesome!" Ummmm....I hit the trees with my drive and had to punch out. "Well, still a pretty sweet birdie." Ummmm...did I mention I had to punch out from my punch out? "Did you at least make par?" Yes I did. "Well, nice par."
