Going forward, what does ISU do on defense?

I thought we adjusted well from last week - if you remember we were getting burned on the outside by San Jose States RB but we did a pretty good job of shutting down the inside stuff. The exact opposite was this week - we were getting to them when they ran outside but that left the middle open and we couldn't afford to give up those outside plays and let their receivers torch us. We were also in good position on those bubble screens, but couldn't wrap them up with the first tackle. Like everyone else has said, we need depth on the defensive line and LBs that can make solo tackles.

Idk I think both Harvey and Northrup are pretty good but young players. Hopefully by next year they will of taken the next step and improve. Paring them with Orien Vance, Jake Hummel, and Sutton will translate into a pretty good group. I feel that D-line is as big a issue if not bigger than linebacker.

With a 4 man front, we need our linebackers to make plays. As a group, they are struggling to fill their designated gaps. I wish Harris would have stayed. This staff plays a lot of LBs and he would have helped us between the tackles.

Harvey and Northrup have shown flashes and have talent, but we need them to get more consistent and make more plays at the point of attack. If they are not the answer, we need to get a couple of Juco guys to help get us through the next couple of years.

Congratulations, I think you just made one of the most ignorant statements on all of CF. Well done.

Awesome! Do I win anything? Is this based only on your opinion, or was there a vote I wasn't aware of?

On far too many passing plays, the only thing Tucker does is stand up and take up one blocker. No effort to all to get off the block. On running downs the last two games he was getting destroyed off the line. Not even able to hold his ground, he has been getting manhandled. He has 1.5 TFL's in 5 games and zero sacks, with all of one QB hurry. However, I'm certain you will provide evidence that proves my ignorance.

I like that our CB's are playing up on the WR and jamming them instead of the old strategy of playing 10 yds off the ball. Of all the stupid things we did the last 5 yrs, that may have bugged me the most.

Today's game was really exciting, and the offense had a chance to win it in the 4th, but the defense, particularly against the run was horrible. Linnwood was making everyone look silly out there. Tons of missed tackles near the line of scrimmage, and huge holes right up the middle.

Don't forget this was the Baylor team that racked up a new bowl rushing record with 645 yards last winter.

The problem with your original post is you said Tucker only plays hard 5 plays a quarter. That is an absolute silly statement. Does Tucker take plays off? Sure he does, but it is a minority of plays and typically when he tires.

Tucker is double teamed quite a bit, so he does get pushed around. He also isn't a great pass rusher, so he is usually subbed out in passing situations. Tucker isn't perfect, but he is our best DL.

If Campbell plans on being here longer than 4 or 5 years, why in the world would CMC recruit Juco's...Lookin' for an answer

HS D-lineman usually take 2-3 years before they are physically ready to play significant minutes. Since CMC wants to win regularly ASAP - JUCO players are the only alternative. The staff is also recruiting HS d-lineman hard as well.

The true freshman Johnson (DT) and Bailey (DE) have shown ability, so I would expect them to be solid next year after an off season in the weightroom. The reality is a team needs 8 quality D-lineman to rotate to keep fresh.

Tongamoa and lima will be a great addition. Obviously the staff knows what they need.

It's gotta be tough for Heacock. So many times our guys were in position to make a tackle but couldn't bring Linwood to the ground.

In fact, we hardly ever even tackled the guy!! We either tripped him up, pushed him out of bounds, or just stood him up with a gang of defenders until forward progress had stopped. Very seldom did we form tackle him.

Monday morning QB,, wished we had changed it up on last two drives. Everyone knew we were not gonna stop them on downs. only a turnover was going to be a stop. Why not an all it blitz. Hope for an interception or qb sack fumble. Worst to happen is they score in one play vs 3-4 plays. If they score in one play, we have time on clock for a TD the other way + two point play to win.

You can't have it all against Baylor. I thought we did a nice job shutting down their passing attack. Linwood gonna Linwood but our inability to knock their QB out of the game was what cost us. We had plenty of chances but he always got away.

Didn't know we are the New Orleans Saints trying to knock out the QB.

I can't like this enough. Rhodes missed on so many LB recruits in his last 4 classes. Go back and look at his 2012-2015 classes and count how many defensive front 7 recruits never played a down for ISU, then count those that became decent contributors.

As for the title of this thread:
Short term, not much we can do to markedly better. Just don't have the talent in the front 7 (and don't cite Tucker as talented, he gives max effort for around 5 plays per game). Improve tackling, get in better position pre-snap.

Long term, recruit the hell out of the DL to get some semblance of depth, get them in the weight room so they can hold their ground for the entire game. Have to ID LB's that are smart and can make tackles in space. But I really think so much of our problems on defense stem from a lack of athleticism and strength on the DL, which should be improved in year 2 and 3 simply by actually developing players through the S&C program.

I'm so proud got a lot of mileage. Give Campbell at least 7 years.

He'said the only DL I've seen consistently chase plays down field clear to the opposite sideline. Has he been effective enough? No. Does he give lots of effort on 95% of plays? I think so.
