Going forward, what does ISU do on defense?

Can't blame the sole LB that was out there for most series. 6 DB's when they are running every down is a bit of a head scratcher. Why not commit to stopping the run? Understand they are one helluva passing team, but at some point you gotta do something.....

I'd say go back to the 4-3, but I suppose that would leave open too many dangerous receivers on a talented team that likes to spread the field. Not to mention it would require us having at least 3 solid LB's to throw out there...Harvey can't do it all by himself. Seeley plays his heart out, but simply isn't the athlete his position requires him to be. McMillen and Mills are OK but certainly below average still when facing Big 12 opponents.

I understand why the staff went with the 6 DBs and 1 LB most of the day. Baylor can score instantly at any point in time, from any point on the field. Make them work for it, but it's hard for me to not want to see an extra LB in there knowing KD Cannon is out to make them prove it through the air first.

LBs and DBs that took terrible angles all game, LBs not filling gaps, DL not wrapping up at the line...those were the problems that jumped out at me the entire game defensively.

It feels like we're stunting our DL a lot more this year than in the past, and I think many of those guys are still learning the assignments and how to play together. Sometimes a stunting DL ends up running himself out of the play, but there should be someone to fill for him. If that doesn't happen, especially against a zone blocking scheme where the OL double teams down hill and the RB just picks a hole, it gives RBs lots of room to run. And Linwood can juke his way through a damn keyhole.

Since Briles took over at Baylor in 2008, their rushing offense has been ranked 33, 110, 23, 12, 15, 12, 31, 3 and 16 so far this year (using total yards). They've developed one of the most consistently high performing rushing offenses in the country. To expect us to shut down their running game is pretty ridiculous. The next best rushing Big 12 team so far this year is TCU who we already played. Everybody else in the league so far is in the bottom half of the nation in rushing yards. Hopefully our DBs, who looked very good in coverage today, will allow us to send an extra defender into the box.

Northrup and Harvey out there remind me of Knott and Klein during their sophomore seasons. No, I'm not saying they will be that good, id be happy if they end up half that good in a couple seasons. They remind me of that because they will go and make a fantastic play and follow it up with a really silly mistake because they react wrong. Hopefully that gets better as they get more experience and we get better players in front of them.

first of all DEPTH. tired defenders make poor tacklers.

second, could one of the reasons to shut down the passing attack be to make baylor take more time to score? If we make one or two more tackles inbounds and keep the gain short, the clock stays running, and maybe baylor scores one less td? If we get 2 first downs in the 4th quarter we probably win.

Does anyone know why they aren't playing J Jahlus at LB? Am I missing something with him? Hard nosed kid, nose for the ball, and he is a good tackler and has some speed.

He played a little against TCU and I thought had some good open field tackles. Liked him on special teams the previous few years as well.

I'm not a coach nor am I a talent scout but it would be worth a shot to mix up personnel at LB. some people are just gamers.

This was obviously the game plan. They left safeties over the top of both sides almost the entire game until the last series or two when they brought an extra LB in for strictly run blitz. THey obviously wanted to take away the deep scoring passes and counted on stopping the run enough times to give the offense a chance. The D was often outnumber 4 D-line, 1 LB to their 5 O-line, 1 RB, and 1QB. That meant run to them every time. It almost worked.

All this...excellent play calling. It did almost work.

Go back 3 years and make Proud Paul Rhodes recruit an actual ******* linebacker.

All this **** is still on Rhodes. What a terrible ******* coach

I can't like this enough. Rhodes missed on so many LB recruits in his last 4 classes. Go back and look at his 2012-2015 classes and count how many defensive front 7 recruits never played a down for ISU, then count those that became decent contributors.

As for the title of this thread:
Short term, not much we can do to markedly better. Just don't have the talent in the front 7 (and don't cite Tucker as talented, he gives max effort for around 5 plays per game). Improve tackling, get in better position pre-snap.

Long term, recruit the hell out of the DL to get some semblance of depth, get them in the weight room so they can hold their ground for the entire game. Have to ID LB's that are smart and can make tackles in space. But I really think so much of our problems on defense stem from a lack of athleticism and strength on the DL, which should be improved in year 2 and 3 simply by actually developing players through the S&C program.

Linebackers. Sutton has to RS at this point for the good of the future, because he's got to be better than what we have
I'm excited about Vance and Hummel as well, they could have immediate playing time. That duo will be bigger than most of linebackers coming in. Stopping the run has been the problem all year. Maybe some of players in the secondary could play linebacker.
