Game Thoughts TCU

We looked better, but the two long runs of 55 and 29 really padded those stats, we also had 4 TFL. We are never going to be a great running team when the defense is run blitzing on first down and attacking the LOS. The only way to back that off is do what we did in the first quarter against OU and throw the ball to the open middle of the field, backing them off.
I agree with both. Continuing to be diverse will help the run game. But I also think the run game has grown and is showing signs of improvement and big plays always skew the stats.

Defensively, I don't have a ton of concerns - though we do need to continue to get better at tackling and I do feel like we might be better suited personal wise to a 4-2 than our dime stack at the present date which would let Lovett/Bacon to just rush with TO and Orange being a pretty darn good interior while still keeping our trio of Cooper, Freyler and Verdon on the field but obviously they know more and the defensive staff has been amazing overall through their time here

The oline played straight nasty last night. Black and Bonifas looked great. Neal came down the line on some nice fold blocks and sealed the edge. Just really happy with that unit last night. The Sama run was some really nice blocking. The double team was absolutely perfect. Sama hit the hold right were he should have and blew by the contain player. Just loved seeing good old fashioned power blocking.

Conversely TCU was double pulling and those guards were dominating us. Glad to see the defense could bend but not break against a strong running attack from TCU.

Also, shout out to McLaughlin. Played a really nice game. Freyler might have played his best game last night as well. Verdon looked sharp. Petersen got decent pressure. Good things to see moving forward in general.
Agree - I am curious to see where Remsburg fits in now as I believe he can play now that 6 games are passed? Unless things have changed.

Pre-suspension I'd have argued he was probably our most purely talented OL

I agree but that was largely against a back up QB in the 2nd half. I think the can fix some things and would bet some of it gets resolved but D still doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy.
The picks were nice, but we were getting carved up on the ground and that true freshman QB came in and looked a little too comfortable after a little shaky start.

I'm pretty optimistic now about the run game moving forward. It seems like Scheelhaase has figured out some things with play calling and pulling linemen/TEs. Black was solid and will only get better. It seems like Clanton's coaching might be starting to come through.

I understand why some might point to the big runs and disregard the yards per carry, but I think the underlying numbers are much better, too. Per Game On Paper, last night had the highest percentage of runs greater than 4 yards this entire season and the lowest percentage of runs less than 2 yards. The stuffed runs (less than zero yards) were still higher than you'd like, but way better than against Ohio and OSU, and the rest was significantly better. The "Offensive Line Yards" per carry were also better than any game other than UNI (then the "Highlight Yards" per carry were better than any game other than OU). Some of those stats are pulled down a bit as well from the last couple series where TCU sold out against the run and we were mostly fine just running clock.

The run game last night is a great momentum builder going into a series of games where we shouldn't be outmatched physically.

First time in a while we just beat up on someone, really fun to see. Feels like we finally took a step forward on offense, and have seemed to shore up our defensive issues (after a shaky first half). A win next week would be huge
Agree.....one of those games where just felt we were in control the whole game. First quarter maybe felt TCU "gifting" us stuff, but to be fair we also went and took it.

TCU looked like the far better team for a quarter and a half. I have no idea what changed, but I’m not complaining

People rightfully got sick of Matt preaching the “margins,” but it seems like they’ve practiced what they preached with the OSU and TCU games. No turnovers on our end while turning the opponent over, few dumb penalties, adequate ST play (wasn’t great last night, but it’s improved this year)

I for one wasn’t sick of it being preached, but frustrated that despite it being a broken record, on game day continuing to be how we lose games.

There’s saying it, then there’s teaching, equipping, and executing against it. For a long time we’ve seemed to only get the saying.

TCU turnovers were the difference in both the first and second halves. ISU's bend/don't break also proved to be a difference maker, particularly with Bailey.
