Game Thoughts TCU

The tackling quality needs to improve. That's a coaching deficiency. Surprised they don't treat this as a priority task.

Great win. I had TCU and spoted ISU 6 points.
So yeah, I was surprised.

I'll say this, ooc losses to Ohio, Wyoming, and Miami Ohio dont look awful now--those teams are actually good.

Wyoming gave Texas all it was in Austin with a backup qb!

Didn’t see the supposed one from OSU last year but Porter got one in the Baylor game in 2020.
Lol "supposed". I remember it. It's funny that some of our fans are hinting that it didn't actually happen.

It is hard to judge this team. There is so much in transition offensively and defensively. CMC has gone from inept to genius. Tackling was poor, but will improve. The QB was mediocre, but still no interceptions. The OL missed some blocks, but opened some great holes. The TEs have improved immensley. DL and LB have had issues, but made some key plays. A 13 point margin, but ISU was outperformed in total yardage and first downs. +4 turnovers, a blocked punt, 2 turnovers on downs, and a disparity in penalties can not be expected to carry the team next time. Young guys still need to gain fundamentals, and they will. There is a lot of upside to finish the season strong.

I thought they played really well overall, the best I've seen since 2021.

Pros.....minimal stupid penalties, our running backs seem to be getting healthy finally, run blocking loomed improved, defense shut then down after Heacock lit into them, coach Campbell actually grew some balls and went for it on 4th.

Cons....more special teams blunders, receivers who continue to run 1 yard short of the sticks, that bizarre halftime show.

Overall I'd give then an A and it gives alot of hope that we can win 3 more games, especially how bad the Big 12 has looked.

You're not creative enough to appreciate how great that halftime show was

Definitely didn’t mean it that way. Just saying I didn’t see it and don’t remember it. No disrespect intended. I can see how that reads, though.

Pro:
- In-game management was much stronger tonight. They didn’t go into a shell once they had a lead (going for it on 4th and 3). I also loved Heacock laying into the D after our worst defensive possession of the year. They appeared to respond well after that. My only nitpick was timeout preservation. We are using too many timeouts to try and draw offsides or because the play clock is running down.
- OL and running game: agree with everyone here they had a good game. Keep it up!

Con:
- The tackling from our D was awful. The TCU RB absolutely gashed us. The DL had trouble finishing sacks, 2 times it led to a TD and a 4th and 12 conversion. Way too many arm tackles from our LBs and safeties too. On one Chandler Morris run, Cooper (who I love) just kind of threw an arm out there to try and trip him rather than try to tackle.
- Kickoffs. We need to get our kickoffs to the end zone. They had a couple big returns (at least one was called back for a hold fortunately). Just remove that possibility by blasting it through the end zone.
That running back is a big time player. Yes, we missed tackles, but he is a stud. Even fairly early in the game I said if I was TCU I would run the ball every play. Glad they did not. Good win. I have been disappointed with our LB play. Even Vaughn. The other guys are super young. I think they have potential, and I think they are getting better.

I agree but that was largely against a back up QB in the 2nd half. I think the can fix some things and would bet some of it gets resolved but D still doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy.
Their backup was about as effective as their starter IMO. Regarding the defense, I think it boils down to young linebackers. I think our defense becomes similar to what we expect once those guys figure it out.

LBs will get better. I think getting an experienced one in the portal might be a smart play this off-season.

Verdon's health clearly plays a massive role in the defense being at it's best.

TCU game condensed into 22 minutes:

I used this video to time Abu's run. The game clock ticks to 11:36 when he crosses the TCU 49, and it ticks to 11:32 at the 11. That works out to a 4.21 s 40 yard dash or 19.4 mph.

I know this isn't olympic swiss timing, but it even with some error, that is dam fast.

+1 on the linebackers. They are critical for this defensive scheme, and they are all kids (except Vaughn who is clearly not at 100%).

One more DL for depth and rotational freshness wouldn't hurt either. That's where losing Lee stings. Hopefully one of the younger guys can emerge.

I think we'll be fine once the big pack of young linebackers that we've already stocked get enough game experience. Extra depth never hurts though.
