Need some help fellow CF. Im driving down that weekend from des moines to the game against texas. Making a nice trip out of it with some golf on friday and going out friday night, tailgating on sat and going to the game and coming back monday. Any suggestions where to stay hotel wise and where any other cyclones will be tailgating at? Thanks in advance

Big group of us are staying at the Embassy Suites. We are going to the Alumni Tailgate on gameday (heard it's a lot of fun) and will be partying thurs/friday/saturday on 6th street.

We have 5 going, will be there on Friday. Do you know where the Alumni Tailgate is at?

Thanks!

This is the tailgate you'll want to attend:

Also, 6th street is all right, but trending downhill due to the high ****** ratio and several establishments closing because they fronts for drug rings that got busted.

Recommend that you check out 4th street, South Congress, and Rainey St instead.

6th street is better than alright, the place is a zoo on the weekends. I've heard it compares to Mardi Gras. There's two parts to 6th st, dirty 6th which is the part of 6th closest to 35 and there's west 6th. Dirty 6th is more where the college scene is but there's a lot of live music, pretty much at every bar on dirty 6th. West 6th is more laid back, where the young professionals are usually found.

Rainey is cool too. It's prolly around 10 or so houses they've converted into patio type bars. A very laid back, chill atmosphere. There's also a food truck part in the middle of Rainey.

5th and 4th are more like west 6th too, so those are also more enjoyable areas that aren't as clustered as dirty 6th is at bar close.

I've always heard "Dirty 6th" used as the name for all of 6th Street after they close the street to traffic and all the locals who want to party late show up.

I'm hoping to make this game, as I will be on vacation, but might not have the $$$ to even leave town... What are ticket prices looking like?

Based on what a couple of friends in Austin say, if the Longhorns keep losing like they have, there will be loads of tickets available. They play Kansas, Baylor and Oklahoma before our game. There's a good chance they could be 2-4.

If you want to be surrounded by fellow Cardinal n' Gold , you'll have to bite the $100 bullet and sit in the designated visitors Section 32 down in the SE endzone corner with us. UT just opened up about 8 rows of 280 or so seats in S32 over a week ago and their online system lets you pick your seats:

http://ev9.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncomm...pc=&caller=&appCode=&cgc=&prc=&ppc=&psc=&sm=1

Matter of fact, those 8+all open rows last week were in a block together. Looking today UT has now spread them out starting as low as R25 but throwing in a couple rows in between each. As if they are trying to weave Horns fans in between us?? WTF! Help us out and buy the $100 now.

Otherwise, yes, you can scalp for a bit cheaper like StubHub, but you'll be surrounded by up to 100K fans clad in burnt orange, of course. I see some tix in S31 next to us, but you'll want to be in row 41 or lower like ISU's tix will likely be and those lower seats are starting around $95 now anyway. If UT continues to screw the pooch, yes, they could come down more.

FYI - You'll likely won't find anyone scalping S32 because the ISU ticket office likely doesn't even have them from UT yet and won't allocate and send those back out until a few weeks before the game. Not to mention many of those rows are free players & coaches family/friends and are only available there at Will Call signup right before the game.

Well, not quite ;-) I've been in Austin for 16 years literally starting the week after I walked off the Hilton plank. Used to do 6th Street a few times a WEEK for years. Ever since the downtown bar scene exploded starting from the '99 hi-tech bubble, 6th has been getting lots of competition down there with other bar districts cropping up everywhere. So the 6th bars have literally been getting old and grungy trying to compete. Most of them are owned by the same three partner group "syndicates" anyway. Used to be a fourth until he, his brother, and some employees in multiple bars all recently got busted by the DEA and sentenced for drug distribution and laundering!

Yes, they block off the street for 5 blocks after 9p or so. And they do that not only to keep the drunk tourists from tripping off the sidewalks and getting hit, but because there are so many MINORS walking the loop w/o a good enough fake ID or can't afford the $20 cover at the 18+ bars down there. Yes, there are a lot of UT students because it's still the largest and 2nd closest district to campus but a lot of minors.

Don't get me wrong, 6th is still a good time. Just watch your wallet! And you're likely to cross other outtatown Staters there that don't know better, either. There are just so many other cooler bar districts downtown now. Here's my suggestions in priority:

  1. Rainey St. (very casual, all old historic houses renovated into bars. A bit too hipster, tho)
  2. West 6th/Market (lounge+club, the older legal UT students)
  3. Far East 6th ("new" dives, dives, dives! East of I-35. Somewhat more seedy and nearly all locals so some extra caution)
  4. 5th St/Colorado/Congress Ave (lounges+clubs)
  5. 4th St/Warehouse (old folks lounges and gay clubs)
  6. 2nd St (wine bars around Austin City Limits theater)
  7. And then there's Dirty 6th ;-)

All this and all I got was Jester King!?

Thanks. Glad to get some real insight from someone who knows. Expect to be in Austin on the weekend of the Baylor/Texas game. Any advice on getting tickets for that one?

@Cycsk:

The UT-Baylor game is not sold out. Looks like still plenty of balcony seating that you can pick your actual seats:

http://ev9.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncomm...pc=&caller=&appCode=&cgc=&prc=&ppc=&psc=&sm=1

StubHub asking prices today look like their still unreasonably above face value pretty much everywhere. The Baylor fanbase is the most fairweather I have ever met, but they ARE starting to travel more so it's harder to wait last minute for good seats at a good deal like we always did up in Waco (always 1st row behind the visitor entrance at 50 yd in old FCS!). FWIW - since the Horns are also on a bye tomorrow and then @Kansas next Sat (while we try to soften up Baylor in JTS later that night) you probably won't see a loss causing further UT fan meltdown and ticket firesales.
