Well, not quite ;-) I've been in Austin for 16 years literally starting the week after I walked off the Hilton plank. Used to do 6th Street a few times a WEEK for years. Ever since the downtown bar scene exploded starting from the '99 hi-tech bubble, 6th has been getting lots of competition down there with other bar districts cropping up everywhere. So the 6th bars have literally been getting old and grungy trying to compete. Most of them are owned by the same three partner group "syndicates" anyway. Used to be a fourth until he, his brother, and some employees in multiple bars all recently got busted by the DEA and sentenced for drug distribution and laundering!
Yes, they block off the street for 5 blocks after 9p or so. And they do that not only to keep the drunk tourists from tripping off the sidewalks and getting hit, but because there are so many MINORS walking the loop w/o a good enough fake ID or can't afford the $20 cover at the 18+ bars down there. Yes, there are a lot of UT students because it's still the largest and 2nd closest district to campus but a lot of minors.
Don't get me wrong, 6th is still a good time. Just watch your wallet! And you're likely to cross other outtatown Staters there that don't know better, either. There are just so many other cooler bar districts downtown now. Here's my suggestions in priority:
- Rainey St. (very casual, all old historic houses renovated into bars. A bit too hipster, tho)
- West 6th/Market (lounge+club, the older legal UT students)
- Far East 6th ("new" dives, dives, dives! East of I-35. Somewhat more seedy and nearly all locals so some extra caution)
- 5th St/Colorado/Congress Ave (lounges+clubs)
- 4th St/Warehouse (old folks lounges and gay clubs)
- 2nd St (wine bars around Austin City Limits theater)
- And then there's Dirty 6th ;-)
