Fun thread on Hawkeye website

Ah, your fellow CF posters. Remember, I was talking about the 3% who seemingly are butthurt beyond belief that Iowa fans are enjoying the post-season success in the NIT - and making every attempt possible to belittle it in every way imaginable.

I'm sure those fringe posters (remember, I'm talking about a very small fraction here) are thrilled you're here to stick up for them.

It's a rivalry Split, we will pee in your Cheerios any chance we get. Most ISU fans would discredit a hypothetical Iowa Rose Bowl victory any way we can because...it's a rivalry.

Now when a rival fan is coming from the lower position it is butthurt, but if rival has enjoyed a more fruitful season then I would say it is just more of a good ribbing. With this years men's bball as a particular example I think some ISU fans are still butthurt about the loss to UI back in December, so they are discrediting the NIT run as much as possible so they can feel superior to hawk fans.

Personally I don't care enough about the NIT to watch a full game of it and I don't care enough about UI to pay close attention. I feel that while Iowa won the head-to-head, ISU is vindicated in their success of the season as a whole. I know I wouldn't trade this season for a "W" over UI, but I do believe many hawk fans would say vice versa or that they would trade the ISU victory for an NCAA appearance, a tourney victory, a tie for 4th in conference, etc.

Plenty of people seem to be caring about Mr Hoiberg lately. I don't think you can really pair Iowa and Iowa State together at this moment. Iowa has some catching up to do.

Ok. Put ISU at like 20th in the Nobody Cares category, and put Iowa at 40th in the Nobody Cares category.

Wow, talk about misleading. Basically most Hawk fans in thread say there isn't much pub cuz it's the NIT.....ie we understand why it's not a national story. Carry on....
National? Regional? Chris' sake! Not even a zip code story.

Iowa guys are owning this thread. Nationally, nobody really cares about either team right now, so who cares if they enjoy watching their team play while hoping for good things next year.

If you think ISU and Hoiberg aren't nationally relevant right now, there are maybe ten teams who are.

I work in Chicago, just yesterday (well after our second NCAA game watched by the whole sports nation) some guy born and raised on the south side came up to me and told me he watched our Ohio State game and thought we got robbed. Said he was excited for Hoiberg and remembered him as a player. When was the last time someone outside of Iowa who is not a fan approached you about Iowa's NIT games and that he remembered watching Fran play and is excited about seeing where Fran takes Iowa?

You're quite off base living in an Hawkeye bubble.

Enjoy your epic championship game against a team the Cyclones already snuffed out twice. ISU has two NIT championships in one season to go along with our round of 32 in the real tournament.

When was the last time ISU fans started a thread complaining about not getting enough coverage in a post season tournament? I know Split will say its just a few Hok fans but when those few fans think anyone outside their fan base cares about the NIT they are going to get made fun of. Add in some of them saying they'd rather play for the NIT final than make the NCAA tournament and it's just too easy.

Iowa BBall is gaining momentum. While it is "only" the NIT they are in a post season tourney and seem to be playing well with the cards that they are dealt.

Stupid fans exist in all fanbases and anyone trying to over value NIT games compared to NCAA one and done are just that, stupid.

However given the fact that Iowa didnt make the NCAA they have taken the opportunity that they were given and have made the most of it. Wins in the NIT are not wins in the NCAA but they are wins none the less. Iowa seems to have taken steps forward in their ability to "finish" games albeit against NIT level competition. The experience and confidence gained in these games is still worth something and could translate into something for next year.

Getting to the NCAA would have been top choice I would imagine but a one a done situation probably doesnt help them as much as the game experience in the NIT gained through multiple wins.

Just my $.02

If they are looking to gain useful experience they need to schedule their non conference games better. But they're only concerned with W's. And so they the likes of Gardner Webb and University of Corpus Christi. They get their W's, but then struggle in the conference. And then end up in the NIT. Which is a chance to get more W's. And the fanbase feels happy with the W'ing season.

Did Fran actually play somewhere? Seriously? I just can't picture it. And while I rolled my eyes when McDoormat was bragging he could still dunk at his age (isn't he 6'8"? Betty White could probably dunk if she was that tall), I can at least see him playing basketball.

Not only did he play, he has the nickname "White Magic"

I remember us playing in MSG in NIT semi finals in 2004 (I think) and getting beat by Rutgers but I don't even remember who won the NIT that year. Basically nobody outside the schools in the NIT give a crap. I'll bet half the Iowa fans could not tell you who they played in their first round this year.

Agree. Their non-con was awful. I would expect them to fix that in the future, if they dont they cant complain about not making the dance as a bubble team. Doesnt change anything that I said. They have taken the opportunity presented to them and made the best of it.

It is just a role reversal. How many times have ISU fans been told by Hawkeye fans that ISU programs are second-rate and not important? Now that ISU was in the premier tournament and somewhat of a media darling (Fred), the fact that Iowa fans are so giddy about a so clearly defined second-rate tournament is too ironic to ignore. I even saw one clamoring for a locker room celebration video. We all know how much they love the Rhoads videos.

Iowa fans have ribbed ISU fans for decades about the very thing they're doing right now. It's an odd situation because their echo chamber has convinced them that this is really important. Jon Miller is the worst. Could you imagine his condescension if the roles were reversed?

I used to try to play both sides, but the bottom line is Iowa fans are just as bad as ISU fans, but there are more of them. Go ahead, make fun of them and don't feel bad about it because they are hypocrites.

I don't blame ISU fans for making fun of Iowa for only being in the NIT (although that terrible Iowa team beat ISU). I don't blame ISU fans for feeling superior this season. ISU had the better season. No argument from me there. What does intrigue me is that ISU fans act like Iowa fans shouldn't be happy of Iowa's success in the NIT. ISU fans make fun of Iowa fans for cheering on Iowa in the NIT. I'm sorry but I'm very excited that we've made it this far. Would I have rather Iowa made the NCAA tournament? Of course, but they didn't, so I'm damn sure going to enjoy the success they're having in the NIT. I would think even the biggest trolls on this site would understand that. Sadly, based on most posts I have read it seems that ISU fans believe Iowa fans shouldn't even watch their NIT games or be excited when they win. It's...interesting.

You also act like all Hok fans are just simply enjoying watching their team play and not saying they would rather be in the NIT finals over the NCAAs or complaining about not getting National media attention...

Exactly. There's definitely more happening than "enjoying" their team play.
Here's some of what we've heard:

1. NIT final better than NCAA 1 and done
2. NIT success implies guaranteed NCAA next year
3. Possible Big 10 title favorites next year
4. Can't understand why media isn't giving attention to the Big NIT event.
5. 4 star and 5 star recruits should be lining up to play for Iowa with the NIT success
6. NIT success shows that NCAA selection committee was wrong not to select Iowa
7. NIT success shows that the basketball programs of ISU and Iowa are in the same boat
8. NIT title game appearance means that Iowa bball program is more successful than programs that have not appeared in recent post season title game
9. Iowa's 25 win season is more successful than all teams that have less than 25 wins this season
10. Rival fan bases are jealous that Iowa is still playing
