Friday Morning Session

GMac == basketball

Brands == Wrestling

Apples and oranges. Simple enough for ya jbhtexas???

They are both college sports. Unless you are suggesting that class has no part in college wrestling...

But SouthernHawk, I'll at least give you credit for not disputing that Brands has no class...

This whining about the VT transfer thing is getting old. They are there to wrestle for Brands, who happens to be one of the best amateur wrestlers of all time, as well. It's really starting to sound like sour grapes.

Sour grapes huh. Actually its the Iowa fans who have sour grapes regarding what VT did by not releasing them and making them sit out a year. I know kids go to certain school because of coaches, but when the kid signs the letter of intent it is a binding contract with the University and not the coach. So if you want to follow a coach when he leaves then you pay the price for breaking the signed contract.

Well said.

I didnt mean to come off as saying Brands is a bad coach, he's shown he's good.

What i meant was how some Iowa wrestling fans will be talking about how ferocious/intense/an animal he is on the side of the mat. Theyll think Hawkeye wrestling is back simply because of that. Being a psycho on the side of the mat doesnt win matches. Its whats done in practice.

After this morning session I would have to agree that Hawkeye wrestling is back. What they did today reminds me so much of what Gable was able to do with his teams.

Thats not to say we won't be good next year, because we will, but I think the Hawks only lose Perry (yes a big loss) and Fields. In my mind they will be the team to beat again next year and it really sucks to say that but let's be realistic they are dominating the National Championships.

We have 5 guys who are 1 win away from being AA. They get that win and the placing points start flowing in and we will shoot up the rankings. Probably not able to win but should be able to get to the top 3.

Oh for **** sake. Hawkeye wrestling is back because they combined two schools. Let's see what happens in 3 years.

I came to this thread trying to get an update on what happened this morning in ISU/national wresting. Instead, it's a mudslinging contest.

Lets keep it civil, folks.

Yeah, I hardly follow wrestling, but the VT - Iowa thing is pretty hokey to me. It is a lot like if a coach left and all of our players transferred away except for two or three decent players.

Oh wait, ISU fans had that happen to them. But in our case we were all "glad" they left because they were "thugs".

Seriously though, with the transfers, that type of thing kills a program. I don't look at it as the kid is "just doing what they want to", I look at it as the coach is screwing his former employer. And that's just not good business normally. Now Brands obviously didn't care. He figures who cares, he won't have to deal with that AD ever again. His dream job is obviously Iowa, and if he wins there they won't ever get rid of him. (and they shouldn't, team looks good this year)

But, it should leave a bad taste in the mouth of the fans. Someone tell me how many wrestlers from Va Tech are in STL this weekend? What is the team score? What does the team look like for the next year? Are they in better shape after Brands left? Will they be better off for having hired Brands?

The one thing it may do is make former Iowa wrestlers less desirable from other colleges. Why hire a guy who will leave and take all his guys with him. Trust me, it's not a good policy to set.

What really pisses me off is that this was shaping up to be ISU's turn to finally dominate and in typical fashion fate decided to take a massive dump on ISU... again. 2010 is supposed to be our year but it will be Iowa's unfortunately.

All we can do is keeping hoping that one of these days god stops hating ISU but until then, **** the Hawks.

All valid points. You also need to weigh in the decision the kids had when they signed with their former school. That is, that they would learn and wrestle under that coach that signed them. If that coach leaves, and the replacement coach isn't much by comparison, they will want out of that school. The kids paid their dues by sitting out, so I don't understand why it's such a big deal to everyone that they're there.

VT has no history of wrestling and Brands was able to get these kids there, just imagine what he will get at EIU with their tradition. Like it or not they have a helluva lot more national championships then we do and more tradition. So yes, I think Brands will be all right in 3 years.

Lose the homerism for just one second and look at this realistically.

After the egg we laid today I don't think you want any updates.

I see it as Iowa will always get good recruits by simply being Iowa. Brands will get good recruits for being Brands. If he was at VT, he would have good recruits and Iowa would have good recruits. That makes two good teams. Brands at Iowa with all the nastiness basically shredded VT's program for a few years. After taking all his recruits to Iowa, there is only one good team from that. This is bad for the sport of wrestling because no one wants to watch a blow-out. The NCAA should encourage parity between the wrestling teams and did what they could to discourage disparity. Iowa rising in this fashion is NOT good for the sport and very nearly eliminated another large school program. I would be have been ok with the transfers to be forced to sit out all but one year of eligibility - if all they want is to train under Brands let them do it. But, don't let that encourage others to follow suit.

I think last year's results really skewed the expectations for this season for many casual fans. I'm not sure what you guys expected this morning. We were favored in one match and we won one match. Sure, it would have been nice to pull some upsets, but it didn't happen. We still have a good shot at a top 3 finish. We are going to get a lot of points tonight if we come to wrestle. This is still a VERY young team. We lost three seniors last year that all placed in the top 5. That is a lot of points to replace.

We can't do anything about what Iowa does. All you can do is tip your cap to them. They deserve it.
