He was saying it was almost certain he was gone, even if he wasn't going to get drafted.
Not true. Chris stated on a FawCast or one of his podcasts that all signs were pointing to Monte being back.

Not Niang, but there were plenty of people on here who expected Ejim and Kane to get drafted in the 1st round based on their play.
People couldn't figure out why Marble was getting drafted and our guys weren't.

Yeah, I've never heard anything from CW other than he expected Monte to return next year. That was on a podcast or two.
didnt they change the rules that you can go to the combine now and workout for teams and still come back? I think
Not that Monte doesn't deserve the time to decide, but that would sure stink for someone like us to know if we can give out another scholarship to a transfer big, for example. I realize we're going for 2107 pg's now, but we still have to know our scholarship situation before we know if we can pull the trigger on an impact juco for example before we settle for what's leftover like last summer.
Except that all first-round rookie contracts are guaranteed for two seasons while the contract given to a UFA does not have to be guaranteed for any amount of time. There's really not that big a difference in being drafted in the last 5-10 picks and being one of the best players left on the board undrafted. You do want to be drafted even if late because it gets an NBA GM to put his ego into your fugure, but those latest picks rarely see the court. I chuckle when Iowa fans want to compare programs or talent based on NBA success because they think Fran's players have done better in the NBA for getting drafted almost last twice. Compare Garrett, Babb and BDJ's minutes to Marble's and White's? Those ISU players have logged something like 12x more NBA minutes. Babb and Marble are nearly a wash, then Garret and now BDJ have logged many more minutes and White is basically in the same position as Ejim trying to make a team by excelling overseas/dleague.

Other than the ego boost of being drafted, it's probably better to be undrafted than selected anywhere in the 2nd round. You can pick and choose the situation that best fits you if you go undrafted. You are owned as a 2nd round pick and likely seen as much as trade fodder than as a wanted piece.I was talking strictly second round, it's better to be drafted but those last few picks aren't far more likely to see NBA minutes than the best undrafted guys. Our local rivals have a very good team this year, prior to that the previous decade of basketball success was two players drafted in the final five picks who played far fewer minutes than several ISU players in the same time frame. Needless to say it got old.
I love the people who think he's not an NBA player and shouldn't go just because they want to be selfish and have him on the team next year.
Everyone wants him back next year but you also have to look at it from his perspective. This draft is pretty damn weak as not a lot of freshman are going to come out. All it takes is a promise from one team in the first round to make it worth it for him.
Not that literally, but it's a board where 99% of people don't watch and/or hate NBA basketball...yet argue with the few of us who love and watch the NBA about the NBA draft.

I look at the NBA today and I see lots of holes. Lakers. Magic. Hornet. Pelicans. Kings. Philly Chilli. Etc. Teams want a consistent player on the court. Monte is about as consistent as they come. Not flashy. Not Westbrookish. Just gets the job done. His passing is very precise. You're trying to make a general draft rule and you just can't. The NBA rosters and the NBA rookie wage scales are small enough that teams just use their picks to fill the holes they have and if they don't have any holes, they either draft and stash a foreign player or trade their pick for a future pick. If they have to use pick #9 or #16 and their big need is backup PG then that's what they're taking. There isn't the pressure to get a certain level of player out of a certain range of Draft pick like their is in the NFL Draft. There are some drafts where there simply aren't any impact players in an entire draft. Ben Simmons is probably the only guy in the 2016 Draft that I'd put money on being an NBA ALL Star at some point in their career.
