Former Local Personalities Today

Kari Lake was in my graduating class at North Scott. I think she was a local newsperson in the QC area, then gained popularity and moved to Phoenix. Apparently she's running for governor.

I remember probably fifteen years ago, a group of us went down to the BWW in Jordan Creek when it first opened. Ben Ulin came up to our table and did magic for us. It made me sad. I think he still does magic at Adventureland.

Makes me wonder if he does it because he has to, or because he loves performing. He might have a day job that pays the bills and does the magic on the side.

He’s been doing the same act everyday at Adventureland for the last few years at least. Would be nice if he came up with some new material

Courtney Maxwell (CH 13) Smith ended up in Kansas City for a while. Married to, I think, a former Chief? Heard she was with IA Alzheimer's organization but that was a few years ago.

I think it's Courtney Maxwell Greene. She is married to Franklin Greene who was the owner of Quality Ford on 22nd St. years ago.

Did Bruce Aune have a Ron Swanson mustache, or am I making that up? I remember watching him when I was a kid on the eastern side of the state.

I was on KCCI AM cut-in one morning in 2007. :D I'd love to get back to the Des Moines Market.

That was because Bryan Karrick was live on location a fair distance away and didn't make it back to the studio in time for the cut-in.

He's Chief Meteorologist at News 13 in Orlando, FL. Stand up guy. Great talent too.

Mark Ferree... former WHO met is now running a Dance studio in Ankeny

Steve Templeton... former WHO met is now at KMOV in St. Louis.

Jacqui Jeras... former WHO met is now at the Weather Channel.

I'm sure there's a few more, but those are a couple who I can think of off the top of my head that haven't already been mentioned.

I think the year before that we were on a class trip to WHO to see the workings of the noon hour news broadcast.

We're looking at assorted things around the studio and in walks the noon hour anchorman wearing jeans and a Grateful Dead T-Shirt.

They slip the fake white shirt and tie and sport coat on him, sweep the hair back a little , apply make-up and produce an anchorman.

I loved playing hockey in Hilton as a kid.

Justin Sacher...my predecessor, is on the air in Fresno. And now that I think about that, just realized I'll be a WHO teenager in July. Crazy.

Ch 13 seems to have lost a lot of the younger reporters/anchors in the past year or 2 it seems like and especially seems odd most of them have been female too. Not sure if that maybe could be a result of the Sonya Heitshusen mess that there possibly is a management issue there? Seems like Maria got anchor job which probably is a move up for her since she wasn't getting a ton of air time as an anchor with 13. Christina Salonikas kind of quietly left last year and I don't think she has caught on anywhere yet. KCCI lost Lauren Donovan and Bree Sullivan this year. I can't even tell you who is on the Ch 5 news as I never watch it.

Courtney Johns appears to be an anchor in Omaha now and I can't remember who the meteorologist before Amber was but I can picture her and I think her name maybe started with A too but I remember her and Courtney sometimes would join the Morning Rush for a segment from time to time. Another one KCCI lost a few years ago that was good was Shaina Humphries who is now in Philadelphia.
I used to live right by the Panera in Johnston. Sometimes I would take my laptop in there and work for a couple hours when it wasn't busy.

I used to see Megan Salois and Jeriann Ritter in there quite a bit. I assume they spend alot of time at the NWS in Johnston when they aren't on the air.

Marcus McIntosh from Kcci would come in with his kids sometimes also.

Is Dolph Pulliam still doing the announcing down at Drake? I met him once he seemed like a really nice person.

They likely rarely if every go there.

Whom is whom?

I worked in a restaurant in C.R. 15ish years ago and he'd come in and have a few beers in the bar area. Staff would sit back and pretend he was using Burgundyisms.

Oh, everyone Bruce worked with compared him to Ron Burgundy, it was definitely a thing. They made a big deal about that when he retired last year. And yes, the rumors about his romantic entanglements with co-workers were true (I heard one story about his then-wife cornering a KCRG employee in her car, confronting her about her involvement with Bruce …)

And it was a huge deal when he shaved the mustache, about a year or so before he retired.

Here‘s kind of a weird deal for me - my wife and I have lived in CR since 1991, seeing Aune on the TV almost every day. All those years, paths never crossing … until 2003, when we were in St. Paul for the Simon & Garfunkel concert, and who do we run into in an antique shop on Summit Street? Bruce Aune (and whichever girlfriend he had at that time). It took a trip out of state to bump into our local news anchor out in the community.

Word on the street is he shaved it off once gray hairs started to show up.
