First trip to Ames - bars, restaurants, etc?

Caseys pizza is the best. Who cares about the rest

I do like Casey's pizza, but have been cooling on them as of late. There is a HUGE difference depending on which store you get it from. And so far - I haven't found one near my house in WDM that really all that great. Got their Large Supreme deal Friday night from the store at 63rd and Grand - the toppings were fine, but the crust was like soggy bread. Couldn't get it out of the box it was so flimsy. The one up in Urbandale we got for work wasn't nearly as bad.

Some stores are different than others, but you would still have that with any other chain pizza place

I am not a fan of Mustard Based BBQ. It was good but not spectacular.

It can be hit or miss for sure so it depends where you get it. When its done right I think its much better than the vinegar based (which I also love).

Little Pigs in Columbia does some good mustard and vinegar based stuff

Caseys' Problem is that it is too greasy. Sometimes I don't want to fertilize the pimple farm everytime I eat Pizza.

This is true...I had a Casey's on Friday night from a different store than usual, and the goober screwed up putting it in the box (I was wondering what he was doing with a spatula in the box when I got there) and smeared sauce all over the bottom of the box, making the crust soggy. Thankfully my go-to store knocks it out the park pretty much always.

Sure enough. But that's the 4th one in WDM and they all pretty much suck. And if I'm driving across town to get pizza, it's going to be Orlondos or Happy Joes Taco Supreme.

Sorry - bit off topic there.

Great Plains is the best pizza in Ames. Nothing else compares and if you think otherwise, you're wrong.

** Full disclosure - I never heard of Jeff's, Gumbys, nor had Home Team or Black market. When I was at ISU - it was pretty much GP, Pizza Pit and Dominoes.

Back when I was in college the options were Home Team, Pizza Pit, the place that made the croc pizzas (can't remember the name), and Happy Joe's. Happy Joe's and Pizza Pit were my favorites. The taco pizza at Happy Joes was amazing and Pizza Pit had great roast beef sandwiches, wings, and pizza.

What I liked the best about Pizza Pit was the location. Great place to go in-between bars and grab another pitcher and some food.

Ohhhh, I forgot about the sandwiches. Used to go on campus in the evenings to study (couldn't study at home - too many distractions). Soon as bldgs would close up, some of us would head to Welch Ave Station for a drink to unwind and maybe get a few other things done. Order food down from Pizza Pit.....

{sighs}

Don't graduate kids. Stay in school. It sucks out here in the real world.

RebelT is fast becoming the Texas BBQ version of twocoach on this website

I think it is just a Texas thing. My brother in law is from Texas and they HAVE to have the best of everything: best BBQ, best pizza (in College Station!?), best donuts, etc. While the rest of the nation speaks in probables, Texas speaks in absolutes. No regards for the fact that people have different preferences, regional parts have different styles of preparing foods, etc.

I will say that Texas does have good brisket, but that is it. One type of meat does not make you the king of BBQ. The ribs are terrible in Texas and they can't seem to figure out how to make chicken or pulled pork AT ALL (some so-called BBQ places don't even have either on their menu!). I'd also like to point out that Austin, TX is overrated. The music scene is good, but the college students are extremely annoying and the whole city seems to be full of smelly hippies and homeless people under EVERY bridge.

I recommend the Grove Cafe as well. Fantastic breakfast joint which I sadly only learned about my last year at Iowa State.

Note that they're cash only, unless something has changed in the past two years.

Now, come on! This is just ridiculous. Dog **** should be higher than Black Market. You've lost all credibility.

Seconded, Black Market is complete trash.
