First trip to Ames - bars, restaurants, etc?

I think it is just a Texas thing. My brother in law is from Texas and they HAVE to have the best of everything: best BBQ, best pizza (in College Station!?), best donuts, etc. While the rest of the nation speaks in probables, Texas speaks in absolutes. No regards for the fact that people have different preferences, regional parts have different styles of preparing foods, etc.

I will say that Texas does have good brisket, but that is it. One type of meat does not make you the king of BBQ. The ribs are terrible in Texas and they can't seem to figure out how to make chicken or pulled pork AT ALL (some so-called BBQ places don't even have either on their menu!). I'd also like to point out that Austin, TX is overrated. The music scene is good, but the college students are extremely annoying and the whole city seems to be full of smelly hippies and homeless people under EVERY bridge.

I won't comment on most of this because i'm obviously extremely biased, but I have to say -- i agree completely on Austin. I honestly can't stand it here. I actually live outside Austin proper because I can't stand being in Austin for an extended period of time.

I loved Home Team at 3 in the morning. Always ordered the huger huge. Also loved a 2 pound burrito from the "old" Poncheros... Chorizo is a hangover stopper...

Jeff's came about in 08 as stated above. It was a mexican joint for a couple years before that. Had amazing tacos. Don't recall the name. I agree that Jeff's pizza is a bit suspect, but I could live on their Manjare' rolls. Go to is gyro and onion with a feta cup, but the steak and havarti are also good. You can get them with pepperoni and moz, very similar to the Gumbys pepperoni rolls.

Didn't we take the title for the best BBQ in KC during the tournament? Could have sworn they started a competition last year between all of the schools as they talked about it on TV when we also won the tournament on the court. Don't knock it til you try it.

Lynch BBQ out of Waucoma, IA was the ISU rep I believe. Excellent BBQ

The last several times I've been down to Ames I cant pass up Olde Main Brew Pub. I love Craft Beer and they have a cool atmosphere, good staph, and good food. Kinda spendy though. DinkyWheat is a great craft beer, they have some good stouts too.

That I can definitely agree with you. Places outside Austin proper are much nicer. UT students are annoying as ****!

If you're not going to do a whole lot of tailgating because you're driving after the game, definitely hit up Welch Ave Station during the day. Watch football, have a couple drinks and get Pizza Pit food from upstairs. It's a good pregame or postgame hangout

Meh. I live in DFW and have family in Austin. I have tried tons of BBQ in Texas (including Franklin BBQ in Austin) and still would not say TX barbeque is better. It is just different. As far as BBQ goes, Texas style barbeque has great meat, but the sauce is pretty weak (not thick, slightly acidic/vinegar-like aftertaste). I've always preferred the BBQ in Iowa, which is more like Kansas City/St. Louis style. Thick sauce and a lot sweeter with a slight kick (more tangyness and molasses).

Regional BBQ styles all depend on your taste. Kansas City/St. Louis, Memphis, Texas, and West Virginia all have very different styles.

OK Joes in KC is the best I have had and I agree on the Texas BBQ joints I have tried.

I heard somewhere that Home Team pizza actually just changed their name to Northern Lights because they had such a bad reputation (as evident in this thread). I'm not sure if that's true or not.

I'm also going to say that I'm on team Pokey Sticks for Life. It may have just been because it was during some of the best years I ever had at Iowa State but they are near to my heart. I wouldn't say that Jeff's is bad, it's just a little blah. Their pizza is still head and shoulders above Gumby's but smotherella sticks are garbage in my opinion.
