First trip to Ames - bars, restaurants, etc?

Great Plains is the only thick crust pizza I eat, if you're going to get pizza on your first trip to Ames and get Jeff's instead of GP, you have failed.

I really hate that this turned into a BBQ wang-measuring contest, but...just no. I've had BBQ from 3 places in KC -- Arthur Bryants, Jack Stack, and Oklahoma Joes. Arthur Bryants is no better than Rudy's, Oklahoma Joes is terrible, and Jack Stack, while phenomenal, isn't really BBQ, just damn good ribs.

Huh??? You get that place confused with another restaurant??

But all the meat tastes the same. Pork, Beef, Ham, Turkey, you name it. All tastes the same. Also, try not to be the complete tool you are. I know how much you can't handle an opinion that isn't the same as your own.

It's not my opinion, it's how it's done.

Why the hell would you do that?

Jeffs >>>> Gumbys.

Their smotherella stix blew pokey stix out of the water.

I never had the opportunity for Pokey Stix but when I was president of my dorm floor, we were looking through old finances and saw that they spent 3 years worth of floor finances on Pokey Stix. So they can't suck.

You are bat schat crazy, Pokey sticks were heaven and you could get an order of them bigger than a VW.

I was living in ames at the crossover between the two (03-08), Pokey stix were basically the same idea as smotherella sticks, except Jeff's makes them better.

Pepperoni rolls and pokey stix. Absolutely fantastic. You can't get those rolls anywhere now.

Side note - a lot of nastiness went down in the Gumby's kitchen, so I've been told.

It doesn't all taste the same. The chicken tastes like smoked chicken, the pork tastes like smoked pork, ad infinitum. Hickory Park is not BBQ. It is smoked meat. There is a difference. BBQ is seasoned - typically according to the regions already discussed - with some sweet, salty and spicy flavors. Smoked meat is usually minimally seasoned, and then the customer can choose what type of sauce to add from ketchup to a variety of BBQ sauces. All of the meats are exposed to the same type of smoke, so the smoke flavor in each different kind of meat is the same. It's almost unheard of for a restaurant to mave multiple smokers each with different kinds of wood for the different kinds of meat.

Jeezus, people get so worked up about whether or not something is BBQ that they forget to consider whether or not the food tastes good. And the vast majority of people think Hickory Park food tastes good regardless of where it falls on the spectrum of methods for cooking meat, as evidenced by the ever increasing size of the restaurant and the fact that there's almost always a wait.

I wish there were a Jeff's here. Or maybe it's good, keeps us from getting pizza too often. Some of the popular options here are no bueno.
