First trip to Ames - bars, restaurants, etc?

For what it's worth, I've tried literally every kind of BBQ out there, except for maybe Iowa BBQ

Iowa isn't really known for BBQ - not to say we don't have places that do it well (Smokey D's is consistently winning national brisket competitions) but mostly because our meats are too good to BBQ. A high-quality Iowa pork chop can stand on its own, and I'd recommend you try one with an ear of fresh Iowa sweet corn if you ever have the chance.

BBQ really is different strokes for different folks though. Where I am now people go crazy for pork with vinegar drizzled all over it and a heap of coleslaw piled on top. It's OK but I'd take some KC style 10 out of 10 times.

Go to Smokin G's out in Marshalltown for good BBQ. Does the owner still have a truck out by Truxel Hall during the day?

Anyway, I don't think Jeff's Pizza is a good late night deal. Their lunch 2 slices and a drink for $5 is obviously way better. But $3 for a slice? (That ain't even that big, you guys need your eyes checked) count me out.

Also, last time we had the whole Hickory Park argument most people named the Non-BBQ items on the menu as the best tasting things. That should tell you all you need to know about the quality of BBQ at Hickory Park.

See the thing about Texas is that they have good brisket but beyond that everything is just OK. Regions are known for different things, like KC is known for ribs and pulled pork (like Iowa) other places are known for burnt ends and such. I've had Memphis BBQ (Rendezvous and Central BBQ), Texas BBQ, KC BBQ (at jack stack), St. Louis, and Iowa BBQ and while they were all good, KC and Iowa have been the best I've had with Memphis being last.

We are actually going to hit up some legendary BBQ in KC before we make the trip up, so BBQ won't be on our list. Plus, no offense, but I live in Austin, which is arguably the epicenter for BBQ in the entire world right now....most other BBQ just doesn't measure up....but I'd still be willing to try it if we weren't getting BBQ right before we come.

That said, Tip Top sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the reco.

Different type of BBQ than down here in Texas. If you're in kc though no real need to have it in Ames... Ames just has larger portions. Same taste.

Go to Welch ave station for any post game celebrations

I really hate that this turned into a BBQ wang-measuring contest, but...just no. I've had BBQ from 3 places in KC -- Arthur Bryants, Jack Stack, and Oklahoma Joes. Arthur Bryants is no better than Rudy's, Oklahoma Joes is terrible, and Jack Stack, while phenomenal, isn't really BBQ, just damn good ribs.

We're having Danny Edwards before we come to the game, and I'm hopeful that will revive the legacy of KC BBQ, but so far the "legendary" places I've tried have been disappointing save for Jack Stack...but again, not really "bbq".

For what it's worth, I've tried literally every kind of BBQ out there, except for maybe Iowa BBQ -- I've had it in Memphis, North Carolina, St Louis, Mississippi....everywhere that matters in the BBQ world. So, to say I've never tried anything else is laughable.

But again, I see that you're from Dallas, which is a BBQ wasteland...so again, I feel for you.

South Carolina BBQ is much much better than NC cue but I digress :twitcy:

This a billion times. Texas is not a good pulled pork or ribs style. Ribs need sauce to put them over the top. Just pit cooking a rib and putting them on my plate is a crime.

Memphis is terrible

The Commissary in Memphis was great BBQ. Been to several in KC but liked that best. Never had Texas BBQ but next time I go to Texas, I am going to Babbs just cause.

Of the places I've been to this is how I would rank the BBQ

KC > Central Texas > NC > Memphis > East Texas > SC > 4 feet of dirt > Alabama (Mayo-Vinegar sauce is ******* gross)

And Central Texas beats NC mainly for the fact that the portions are huge which I love. They are about the same quality IMO.

Well, you know, that's how it's ******* done everywhere.
But all the meat tastes the same. Pork, Beef, Ham, Turkey, you name it. All tastes the same. Also, try not to be the complete tool you are. I know how much you can't handle an opinion that isn't the same as your own.
