First trip to Ames - bars, restaurants, etc?

Well, the first key to your post is that the best barbecue doesn't need sauce. Sauce is a nice addition to bbq, but it shouldn't really have anything to do with the meat itself. People who don't have the best meat worry about sauce. :)

Second, you've obviously not tried enough Texas BBQ if you think some of those things. Unfortunately, DFW is a wasteland for BBQ, so I can't say that I blame you. I've heard the new Pecan Lodge is pretty good, but beyond that, there isn't a really great BBQ place in DFW. The best near that area is Clark's in Tioga. But, the key is -- there are some great, thick, sweet sauces. Heck, Franklin actually has a pretty good sweet sauce as one of their three offerings. The sauce at Stiles Switch in Austin is fantastic -- sweet like you say.

If you're ever down in Austin, hit me up -- there are quite a few places we can go that I bet would change your mind. :)

Jack Stack is fantastic. I've been there twice, most recently about a month ago. Their brisket sucks, but the ribs are fantastic. Their sides though...man. I normally say that anytime you have to talk about the sides that means the BBQ isn't good, but JS is the exception. Jeez they are good.

Early- to mid-30's.

There is a lot of great stuff outside of Texas. BBQ just isn't one of them.

Well, I think most regional rankings nationwide always seem to have Memphis and Kansas City as the top two spots in Barbeque. It's all about preference. I saw a show on Food Network once when they compared regional BBQ and the winner ended up being North Carolina and Memphis, while KC ranked pretty low. I get what you're saying about the sauce, but everyone already slow cooks their meat for 20+ hours, so sauce and seasoning are the big differentiators. However, since all the regions do it differently, it really is like comparing apples and oranges. A better argument is to say: best KC/St. Louis style BBQ place, best TX style BBQ Place, best Memphis style place, etc.

Didn't we take the title for the best BBQ in KC during the tournament? Could have sworn they started a competition last year between all of the schools as they talked about it on TV when we also won the tournament on the court. Don't knock it til you try it.

You're just kind of an all-around ******* huh? And you don't know **** about BBQ.

For any of you that want to turn this into a 'Best BBQ' argument; Memphis, KC, Texas, and the Carolina's don't even have the best BBQ. The best BBQ in the US is Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY. I spent two years working on a construction project up there and that and the easy SU girls were the only good things about that town. If anyone ever ventures up that way, I highly recommend it. That said, I love BBQ and Hickory Park is decent, but nothing special. If you're trying to tell a Texan how amazing Hickory Park is, you're just setting them up for disappointment.

RebelT, I highly recommend trying out Great Plains. Their pizza is amazing and even though I graduated five years ago, I still have dreams about their pizza on 'Denver Style' crust. It's this ultra deep dish on a wheat and rolled oats crust with about thirty pounds of cheese on the pizza. I need to come back to Ames for a game and some pizza.

I thought you were 16...

I'll be in Austin next weekend for a wedding...I've been down there about a half-dozen times and never had barbecue...where are some places to check out?

I like the sound of this. I'm always looking for places that people dream about going back to or have that "one" dish.

I appreciate the input. Thanks!

That you dip in honey...you left off that part lulz

I don't think saying 30 pounds of cheese is a good selling point when recommending a pizza place. That's GP's one flaw

Here is an idea. Show up to the tailgate lots around 9-11 A.M. Don't worry there will already be 20,000-30,000 fans already tailgating. Bring a case of beer and your whiskey of choice (being from Texas I assume you enjoy some whiskey). Drink until you can't see, then eat whatever the hell some random tailgater gives you...

I guarantee it will taste better than any of the BBQ you have in Texas.

Why is that a bad thing? Cheese makes everything better. The mozzarella they use is so tasty and it is perfectly lightly browned on top. Thank you for reminding me about the honey part. I can't believe I left that part off!

1.) Franklin Barbecue. It'll change your life. Best brisket on the planet. Amazing ribs.
2.) LA BBQ. Started by a former apprentice at Franklin.
3.) John Mueller Meat Company. The son of the legendary Louis Mueller who has been doing BBQ in central Texas for decades. His beef rib is something serious.
4.) Micklethwait Craft Meats. Very, very good. This is a place to get a variety of things -- go with a group and order a pound of everything.
5.) Stiles Switch. My go-to, simply because it's easy to get to, air conditioned, and they don't run out. It's number 5 for a reason -- the top 4 are better -- but this is the place you go if you don't have the luxury of planning around a trip to get BBQ. Good brisket and an absolutely phenomenal beef rib.

You can't go wrong with any of those 5. Now, on the other end, regardless of what you hear, steer clear of Salt Lick. Place is unbelievably overrated.

Enjoy!

Awesome. The thing is, I usually make it a point to try and remember the game.

But your whiskey idea is solid. We've got some Balcones Single Malt I'm sure we'll enjoy.

Great Plains is great. However, if it's just you and another dude don't order an entire pizza, you will only be able to eat 2 maybe 3 MAX. You can only order pizza by the slice over lunch time though so I'd suggest going there then.
