Ferentz

It's crazy how quiet Hawk fans have been around my work. They are stressed.

One guy I umpire with said that in a few weeks, when we are done umpiring, he's jsut going to go hunting every Saturday. Before the season he was touting an improved passing attack. He thought they would KILL NIU and that ISU would not have a chance at Kinnick. His attitude has soured a bit and all of a sudden he is sick of KF and his conservative coaching.

I dunno, sounds like a lot of hawk fans I know!

lol he's trying too hard. If he wasn't so obvious about it (Iowa fans don't say hoks or hox) he could post ridiculous things and people would believe he's just another crazy Iowa fan. You know, kind of like Jambalaya except he claims to be an ISU fan.

I know there was unrest in Hawk country after last season which I think had a lot to do with bringing in 2 new coordinators. I think the hope was that the new blood would energize the team. We are only 2 games in but it's not looking good so far.

If OC becomes a revolving door at Iowa that could spell trouble for the team and eventually KF.

How smart is the guy you umpire with? He sounds like an idiot just based off this. This Iowa offense looks nothing like the Iowa offense that KOK ran and it has nothing to do with being conservative. I'm not sure I like the horizontal passing attack but I'll at least wait to judge it until he gets a QB that fits the system.

I personally dont see any way Iowa makes a move at head coach unless they go 1-11 this year.

They replace two long term coordinators with new faces this year coupled with what everyone knew was a depleted roster compared to previous years.

If they limp through this year AND next then I could maybe see KF in the hot seat.

He's no genius but he usually knows what he is talking about with the Hawks. I don't think he was trying to say the offenses were similar, I think he was just ticked about it in general and doesn't like the hire that KF made.

He's the kind of Hawk fan that thinks the ISU game should be as easy as the UNI game usually is and ISU should never have a chance against his beloved Hawks. I usually just smile and nod and laugh at him inside when ISU wins.

I think you bring up a good point, honestly. It looks to me like KF is riding his success in the early 90s along with a really soft B1G conference. In more recent years, the team hasn't been overly impressive. from 02-04 they had their string of top ten finishes and January bowls and bla bla, but here is where they have been since then.

05 - 7-5
06 - 6-7
07 - 6-6
08 - 9-4
09 - 11-2 (only played 2 top 25 teams in the regular season)
10 - 8-5
11 - 7-5
12 - 1-1 and not looking good.

I think average hawk fan is living in this 02-04 world where they think they are on the cusp of being a traditional top 10 team. How many more years of 6 or 7 win seasons are they going to be satisfied with? Especially if they mix in a couple of stinker rebuilding years in there and ISU regains the upper hand in the rivalry. I think he is on solid footing for now because he is feasting on a weak conference and achieving at a level that is pretty good historically for iowa. However, I think the fanbase has delusions of grandeur that could eventually catch up to him if he doesn't put together another run like he did in the early 2000s.

Yeah, I think he's got a lot of time. Just wondering what everyone else thought. It's sad that 2-10 seasons are nearly impossible in the Big10.

What conference are they possible in? ISU has a tough schedule and they'd have to suck pretty bad to go 2-10.

You ever see the guy with the 70's hair do and maybe a early 80's sweater on. That guy looked in the mirror and gave himself an approval, "looking good." That is Ferentz, the University of Iowa and the Big Ten as a whole. While the rest of college football evolves around them they continue to slap themselves on the back with blinders on. Using the BTN as a way to keep the fans thinking they are great. It's like state television in Iran. That being the case Ferentz isn't going anywhere until he decides. I would argue that he is grooming Mr. Cheap Housing to be the next coach in 4-6 years. Currently if their gutless AD tried to fire him, Ferentz would simply say no and Barta would say okay Kirk, whatever you say.

Sadly, even a stinker rebuilding year will probably end up being 6-6 for Iowa in the Big10. It will be interesting to see what would happen if 7-5 is the max for the next 3 or 4 years. I think we'd see a new OC for sure in that scenario and if that didn't work, suggested retirement might be not too far off. Kirk's only 57 now though.

They'll never can KF.

They will always make a bowl game no matter how bad they are Big 10 sucks and has tons of bowl contracts. They schedule 4 non-cons, so even though they still have to play us, they can still schedule three cream puffs non-con. They get to play Minnesota and Northwestern every year, and with some shots at Indiana, Illinois, and Penn State, they would have to really suck to lose more than six games a year.

As for KF, he will be there at least until his youngest kid is done with football. Can't imagine him making much more money anywhere but pros, and he has been mediocre enough lately, don't see that happening. He has forever job security at a place willing to overpay him. Why leave?

Well Gene Chizik and Kevin Garnett taught me that "Anything is possible!"

God I hate Gene Chizik.

Iowa has had significant player attrition problems at DL and RB (well documented) the last few years. If they can keep their current DL around through graduation, and maintain the OL, I think they'll be back to 8+ wins within a couple of years (maybe even next year). Although their new coordinators may affect that as well. I'm really wondering if Greg Davis is a good fit at Iowa (as are most Hawk fans).

Iowa has so far followed a cycle of 3 years of 7 or less wins followed by 3 years of 8 or more wins through Ferentz's tenure. In that case, this would be year 2 of their 7 or less win cycle. Their schedule turns a bit harder next year, so I could see next year being another 7 or less win season, but by 2014-15, they should have the talent and experience back to a level to be more competitive.

If they're still hovering around .500 after that year, I think he will be under heavy pressure.

He will be fine, Iowa will make another good bowl this year. Big10 is HORRIBLE.

Plus they move up one this year in bowls since OSU is prohibited. They could be 7-5 in new years day bowl.

And Penn State if they would of qualified.

I think this is always a simple answer....Whenever fan $upport $lides off and ticket $ales decline in quite a drastic manner. Ferentz has been a revenue machine for the Hawks. They sell out games and put 75K in the stands nearly each home game, because they know/think that each year they have a shot to win 10 games. The W-L records haven't been recently what average fan wants to see, but Barta and co are cashing nice checks by the time the season rolls around.

When the bottom line at Iowa is hurt, then Ferentz will be sent out. I think far too much is made of his salary. They pay him for the security that he offers the Iowa athletic department because they know Iowa fans will buy up tickets and support, and at worst he'll put a decent enough product on the field. Get someone else in there and it's possible he drives the program off a cliff and the fan base bails.
