Ferentz

Maryland had a similar situation as Iowa. Ralph Freidgon had a couple big seasons early in the 2000's...mighta gone to a BCS bowl too. Then went through a slew of mediocre years, and then rebounded for like a 10 win season, and during that year Ralphn was deemed lame duck coach late in the year and sent packing.

Reason being? Ticket sales had declined for 5 or 6 straight years at Maryland. I don't know if the experiment worked with Randy Edsall to juice up the fan ba$e though...The Iowa fanbase always has high hopes for next year if they have a medicore year.

The mantra and hope of doing well when not expected might be their curse that keeps Ferentz around.

I throw this out there, but I'd bet Ferentz getting Iowa back up off the mat in a quick manner(2001) probably hurt McCarney from really gaining some traction and puling in the better/best Iowa recruits.

I'd bet Barta and co have taken notice of whats going on at ISU with new revenue, ticket sales, attendance, facilities, ISU's big wins, general excitement around ISU, etc and would like to keep things busine$$ as usual at Iowa. Ferentz for the time being ensures that Iowa keeps making that G today. :twitcy:

If you could get inside his robotic speaking businesslike un-emotionalal head you might get a glimpse of his future game plan - He probably could take any NFL head job that came open but then he'd have to work 14 hour days and babysit more then what he does at Iowa (we'll maybe not). He's got it made at Iowa and one of the top paid NCAA coaches.

Ferentz at U of I is a good thing for ISU. They will come to Ames next year with a new qb in his 2nd game and we will have a better team next year playing at home. (exception at LB). 3 in a row for Cy. Ferentz, unlike Fry, never badmouths ISU and is not a "rabblerouser" who stirs up his fanbase or evidently his players. Laidback. CPR is winning the in-state recruiting battle. Any talk from a Cyclone fan that between the lines is hopeful that Iowa replaces KF may get what he is wishing for.....a younger coach with a fire in his belly at IC and that would not be a good thing for Cy.

It's crazy how quiet Hawk fans have been around my work. They are stressed.

One guy I umpire with said that in a few weeks, when we are done umpiring, he's jsut going to go hunting every Saturday. Before the season he was touting an improved passing attack. He thought they would KILL NIU and that ISU would not have a chance at Kinnick. His attitude has soured a bit and all of a sudden he is sick of KF and his conservative coaching.

The exodus of the bandwagon fans has started just as I thought. They will find other things to do on Sat, and if ISU starts having really good seasons then they will claim to be a Clone fan......like clockwork.

ISU will have a better team next year? I highly doubt that. They may still beat Iowa as a first time QB going into Ames isn't a recipe for success but there are a ton of important seniors on both sides of the ball.

Folks that believe KF could go to any NFL team are dreaming. He has been out of the NFL loop for 15+ years and the game has changed. No use being as delusional as hawks fans as it just would not happen. I chuckle when I hear these assumptions.

I think you bring up a good point, honestly. It looks to me like KF is riding his success in the early 90s along with a really soft B1G conference. In more recent years, the team hasn't been overly impressive. from 02-04 they had their string of top ten finishes and January bowls and bla bla, but here is where they have been since then.

05 - 7-5
06 - 6-7
07 - 6-6
08 - 9-4
09 - 11-2 (only played 2 top 25 teams in the regular season)
10 - 8-5
11 - 7-5
12 - 1-1 and not looking good.

.

With that kind of ongoing record it would be great if he stayed for a long, long, long time. Unfortunately, I firmly believe he'll be in KC next year after they fire/demote the interum coach Romeo....the stars are lining up too much for this one not to happen.

Please stay forever Kirk!

At the risk of a hijack...I thought I read something somewhere that ISU returns 8 starters (4 on each side of the ball) next season. Assuming that data is correct, how does that support your assertion in bold?

Then again, if I'm all wet and you return 17 starters, I would agree 100%.

We are no longer in rebuild mode in Ames. Reloading has taken its' place.

Are you on crack? Seriously...:twitcy:

*Dang, if only we had an INSTATE RIVALS forum for this kind of garbage!

Coach 'Walking Dead' Kurt Ferents is very good for Iowa State. Hope he sticks around quite a while longer.
Still think Iowa goes 3-9 this year, though.

Even if Ferentz was on the hot seat this year, his buyout number would be ridiculous - around 15 to 20 million IIRC. He's not going anywhere for at least a few seasons unless he decides to walk away (plausible if the bottom falls out on the program, but unlikely).
And the assistant coaches will likely get at least one more season after this one to implement their systems.

I've never got where the school of thought that KF would be a good NFL head coach comes from. Yes, he's part of the Belichick school of coaching but he really has none of the main attributes you would look for in an NFL coach. The things KF is best at, developing unheralded recruits into NFL draft picks over the course of five years, coaching his team up Sunday-Friday, really don't have much of a place in the win now NFL.

He's never been a great game coach, opposing coaches always mention how easy Iowa is to prepare for, he's not good adapting his coaching strategy to keep up the with the changes in the game, something Belichick is great at. He's had a hard time getting along with loud, outspoken players, something he would have to deal with for sure in the NFL. Outside of the Iowa fanbase he's mainly known for just being an overpaid coach. I think if he did ever get an NFL job he would be fired within 3 years.

You watch though. He'll down a *down* year this year, and then some stories will surface about NFL teams courting him. Joe Squakeye will get concerned, KF will decide to stay in the end. Cue the singing rainbows and hallelujah chorus.

Ferentz has the same agent Houston Nutt has, there's a reason their names are mentioned for just about every open job available.
